Reviews Summary

Honda’s subcompact SUV gets a makeover inside and out. Previously based on the Fit, the new HR-V shares the global architecture that also underpins the Civic.

Honda continues to narrow trim options: There were once as many as five, but the Touring trim level got the axe for the 2022 model year, and the EX has now left the lineup as well. The three remaining trims for 2023 are LX, Sport, and EX-L. We drove the top trim, EX-L, through the mountains of Washington's Columbia River Gorge.

New styling plus the newly standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features put this latest HR-V back at the front of the pack it led when it debuted in 2016.

Reviews Summary

The Trax was launched for the 2015 model year as a no-frills subcompact crossover, designed to serve as basic transportation at an affordable cost. However, the Trax moldered in showrooms without any significant updates until the 2022 model year—when it was discontinued altogether.

But now the Trax is back in totally revamped, second-generation form. It's as big of a reimagining as you'll likely ever see in a car like this. The new Trax is bigger than before, more effort has been put into its styling, and Chevy has added the tech features that have become the norm since the original Trax was launched. Still the entry-level model in Chevy's lineup, the Trax sits below the Chevy Trailblazer, and takes aim at the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks, but it was also designed to retain owners of discontinued small cars like the Chevy Cruze, Sonic, and Spark, bridging the gap between car and crossover.

The redesigned 2024 Trax launches in LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trim levels. We sampled 2RS and Activ models on roads around Asheville, North Carolina.

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
The 2023 Honda HR-V has undergone a significant transformation, shedding its previous association with the Fit to adopt the global architecture underpinning the Civic. This shift has not only brought a reduction in the number of trim options—narrowing down to LX, Sport, and EX-L—but also introduced fresh styling and the now-standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features, reestablishing its competitiveness in the subcompact SUV segment. On the other hand, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax marks a triumphant return with a complete overhaul. Originally introduced as a no-frills subcompact crossover, the Trax was discontinued in 2022 only to reemerge in a second-generation avatar that boasts significant enhancements in size, styling, and technology, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional cars and crossovers.

Performance

2023 Honda HR-V

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
Performance ratings diverge slightly with the HR-V receiving a 7 out of 10 and the Trax an 8 out of 10 from CarGurus experts. The 2023 HR-V is powered by a 2.0-liter engine producing 158 horsepower, paired with a CVT that includes a Step-Shift function. It offers a single powertrain across all trims, providing a balance between efficiency and drivability, albeit with room for enhancement, particularly in noise insulation and power delivery. The 2024 Trax introduces a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, outputting 137 horsepower with a focus on responsiveness and efficiency. Despite its smaller engine, the Trax promises improved acceleration and maintains a car-like handling that’s both nimble and refined, marking a significant improvement over its predecessor.
Form and function

2023 Honda HR-V

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

8/10
In the realm of practicality and interior design, both the 2023 Honda HR-V and the 2024 Chevrolet Trax score an 8 out of 10. The Honda HR-V, though compact, cleverly maximizes its interior space to deliver a comfortable and well-thought-out environment. It offers 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and expands to 55.1 cubic feet when they're folded down. Despite a slight decrease in total cargo volume compared to its predecessor, Honda maintains that the HR-V’s cargo capacity remains among the best in its class. The Chevrolet Trax, having undergone a significant increase in size for the 2024 model year, doesn’t uniformly translate this growth into interior volume. However, it does offer a commendable increase in cargo space, boasting 25.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.1 cubic feet with them folded, marking a slight advantage over the HR-V in terms of cargo space with the seats up. This increase, along with the additional three inches of rear-seat legroom and a comfortable yet car-like driving position, demonstrates Chevy’s commitment to combining comfort with practicality in its redesigned subcompact crossover. Both vehicles exhibit thoughtful engineering in their approach to balancing form and function within the constraints of the subcompact SUV segment. Whether prioritizing passenger comfort or cargo capacity, buyers will find both models offer a competitive and appealing package.
Technology

2023 Honda HR-V

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

9/10
Technology sees the Trax taking the lead with a 9 out of 10 rating, compared to the HR-V's 8 out of 10. The HR-V's infotainment system is robust, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the lineup. The Trax, however, edges out with its larger touchscreens, digital instrument cluster, and the introduction of wireless connectivity features, indicating a more forward-thinking approach to in-car technology.
Safety

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Trax

7/10
The Honda HR-V shines in safety with a 9 out of 10 rating, bolstered by the standard inclusion of Honda Sensing across all trims. The Chevrolet Trax scores a 7 out of 10, offering a solid suite of safety features, albeit with some advanced features remaining optional.
