Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer name to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colors, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. The result is a boxy vehicle emphasizing practicality over style, offering seating for up to seven people and a base price under $40,000 combined with the performance, technology, and luxury upgrades you expect in a Mercedes.

Look and feel

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

5/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB was positioned between the GLA and GLC in the automaker's SUV lineup, available in GLB250 and AMG GLB35 specifications. The GLB250 offered front-wheel drive (FWD) or 4Matic all-wheel drive (AWD), while the AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain with a sophisticated AWD system. The model year introduced changes like satellite radio in the Premium Package and a new AMG Night Package Plus with black grille louvers and badges. The AMG GLB35 also featured a new Rose Gold paint option. Starting at $38,600 for the GLB250, the AMG GLB35 began at $51,000, with our test vehicle totaling $57,250 with options. The GLB's design was polarizing, with a steep windshield angle and short overhangs, but the 21-inch wheels added style. Inside, the cabin was a visual treat with high-definition displays and ambient lighting, though the controls required acclimation. Quality was evident, but road noise was pronounced, especially with the larger wheels.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer resembled a mini version of the Chevrolet Blazer, offering SUV toughness without exaggeration. It featured intricate lighting elements and dark chrome trim for an upscale appearance. The Activ and RS models had unique styling, with the Activ sporting a rugged look and the RS adopting a sportier aesthetic. Contrasting roofs were available, adding a distinctive touch. Our Activ test car had leatherette upholstery and a mix of copper-toned and black plastic trim, giving the interior personality. While the cabin didn't scream "outdoor adventure," design touches like grab handles and a creased dashboard made it distinctive. The Trailblazer's interior was comfortable, though the flat rear seat cushions were less ideal for long trips.

Performance

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in both versions. The AMG GLB35 was enhanced to produce 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, outperforming the GLB250's engine by 81 hp and 37 lb-ft. The AMG GLB35 included an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD, and an AMG Sport Exhaust system. It accelerated to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, 1.8 seconds faster than the GLB250. The AMG GLB35's fuel economy was rated at 22 mpg combined, with our testing averaging 21.8 mpg. The AMG High-Performance Braking System and AMG Ride Control adaptive damping sport suspension were standard, emphasizing performance over comfort. The AMG GLB35 excelled on twisty roads, offering a thrilling driving experience, but its firm ride and loud cabin made it less suitable for daily driving.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform and powertrains with the Buick Encore GX. It offered a standard 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and an optional 1.3-liter turbo-three with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. The 1.2-liter engine was FWD only, while the 1.3-liter engine offered FWD or AWD. FWD models had a CVT, while AWD models had a nine-speed automatic transmission. Our Activ test car had AWD and the 1.3-liter engine, providing a decent amount of power and a pleasing exhaust note. The nine-speed automatic had some rough shifts, but the Trailblazer felt composed and nimble. The selectable AWD system required manual engagement, unlike competitors' automatic systems. The Trailblazer offered Normal, Sport, and Snow drive modes, though Sport mode's impact was minimal. The Activ model's dampers worked well on pavement, but the ride could be bouncy over road imperfections.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered a roomy interior for a small SUV, with an optional third-row seat for children. Standard features included dual-zone automatic climate control and eight-way power-adjustable front seats. Simulated leather upholstery was standard, with options for real leather, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. The GLB's cabin was easy to access, with comfortable seating for two adults in the rear. The optional third-row seat reduced cargo space, making it less practical for U.S. buyers. The GLB provided 22 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 62 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer was one of the smallest SUVs available, yet offered substantial space. It was wider and taller than the original S-10 Blazer, with a longer wheelbase for improved passenger space. The Trailblazer matched the Kia Seltos in headroom and offered more rear legroom than the Hyundai Kona and Buick Encore GX. The rear seats were comfortable for short trips, but flat cushions made long journeys less appealing. The Trailblazer provided 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, expanding to 54.4 cubic feet with them folded. While respectable, these figures were behind the Kia Seltos. The Trailblazer's towing capacity was limited to 1,000 pounds. Up front, storage options included a covered bin, deep tray, and cupholders, though a small dashboard carve-out's purpose was unclear.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured the MBUX infotainment system, with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and touchscreen in the AMG GLB35. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mercedes Me connected services. The Premium Package added satellite radio, while the Multimedia Package included navigation with augmented reality. Optional upgrades included wireless charging, a Burmester audio system, WiFi, and gesture control. MBUX was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition and a digital assistant. The navigation system's augmented reality impressed, especially in urban areas.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer's standard infotainment system included a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Optional features included an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose audio system, rear USB ports, and wireless charging. While the Trailblazer's tech might not satisfy the most tech-savvy buyers, it was adequate for most. The 8-inch touchscreen was well-sized, with easy-to-read graphics and logical menus. The combination of a smaller instrument cluster screen and analog gauges conveyed information effectively, with smart design touches aiding comprehension.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB test vehicle lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which added 12 advanced safety features. Missing features included evasive steering assist, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. The test vehicle included Active Brake Assist, blind-spot monitoring, and Mercedes-Benz emergency call service. Crash-test ratings were unavailable.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer earned a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.
