Reviews Summary

The Cadillac XT5 offers plenty of the luxury experience for less money and fuss than some of its competitors. Even so, this SUV lacks the driving excitement and engagement that the Europeans offer, and it can’t match the style and tech of the Korean and Japanese brands. If it were our only choice, there’d be little to complain about, but when there are so many other great options in the same segment—including the Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Genesis GV70, and Porsche Macan—the Cadillac loses some of its shine.

Reviews Summary

The all-new second-generation 2027 Kia Telluride has big shoes to fill and seems to be easily up to the task. With ample power, an efficient Hybrid model, and clever design, it could very well be a class leader among very competitive rivals. There are also luxurious and terrain-capable variants to go along with the sensibly priced models, giving the Telluride even broader appeal than before.

Verdict: If the first-generation Telluride set the bar for value and family-friendly practicality, the second generation raises it. The latest Telluride adds a compelling hybrid option and a more upscale feel while keeping prices in check.

2023 Cadillac XT5

6/10

2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid

6/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 aimed to deliver affordable luxury, but its interior leaned more towards practicality than opulence. The cabin, while spacious and intuitively laid out, featured materials that seemed more fitting for a Buick or a high-end Chevy rather than a luxury Cadillac. Despite this, the XT5 offered ample headroom and legroom in both rows, with a panoramic sunroof option enhancing the airy feel. The cargo space was a strong point, providing 30 cubic feet behind the second-row seats, which expanded to 63 cubic feet with the seats folded down. Cadillac's decision to retain physical controls over an all-touch interface lent the XT5 a more intuitive feel, though it also contributed to a somewhat dated cabin appearance.

In contrast, the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid presented a bold exterior design that could polarize opinions, particularly with its distinctive grille. The vehicle's personality shifted with different color and trim options, offering a unique look in each configuration. The interior was less controversial, featuring a simple horizontal dashboard layout and a modern, buttonless appearance. The Hybrid SX Prestige trim, with its Executive package, added a luxurious touch reminiscent of Volvo's interiors. The seats, covered in synthetic leather and suede, provided comfort, though the cushions were somewhat firm. The Telluride's interior materials were of excellent quality, with various trim surfaces available, including engineered wood and carbon fiber.

Performance

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 came equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It offered both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. The base powertrain accelerated from 0-60 mph in the high-seven-second range, though the engine could sound rough under heavy throttle. An available V6 engine delivered 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, providing a more suitable companion for various driving situations. However, the XT5 lacked driving excitement and struggled to match the handling and refinement of competitors like the BMW X3 and Genesis GV70. The XT5's fuel economy ranged from 22 mpg city to 29 mpg highway with the turbo-four and FWD, while the V6 and AWD combination achieved 18/25/21 mpg.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid featured a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 274 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid model added electric motors and a 1.65-kWh battery pack, increasing output to 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The Telluride Hybrid delivered a smooth and quiet ride, with seamless transitions between electric and gas power. The X-Pro Prestige trim offered off-road capabilities, while the Hybrid SX Prestige provided a stiffer ride with its 20-inch wheels. The Telluride's handling was composed and controllable, instilling confidence on winding roads. The brake pedal effort was soft, but brake response was immediate during panic stops.

Form and function

2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5's interior featured more hard plastics than expected, but it offered practical storage solutions, including a deep center console storage bin and large seatback pockets. The cargo space was generous, with 30 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 63 cubic feet with the seats folded down. The wide liftgate opening and low load floor made accessing the cargo area easy. The XT5's cargo capacity was competitive within its class, surpassing models like the Porsche Macan and Genesis GV70.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid provided ample space for adults in all three rows, though the rearmost row was better suited for smaller passengers. The second row featured power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation, offering comfort comparable to business-class airline seats. The Telluride's cargo capacity was impressive, with 22.3 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 89.3 cubic feet with the second-row seatbacks folded flat. The Hybrid models lost only about one cubic foot of cargo space. The Telluride also offered practical storage solutions, including a large center bin with deployable cupholders and a tray underneath the center console.

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 featured the CUE infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system was intuitive and responsive, with physical buttons for climate controls and steering wheel functions. A Bose premium audio system with 14 speakers was available, along with wireless charging and navigation. The XT5's infotainment system was competitive within its segment, though not as advanced as Volvo's Google-based system.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid came equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 5-inch touchscreen for climate controls. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual wireless phone chargers, and a native navigation system. The infotainment system was user-friendly, though it occasionally required a hard tap to register inputs. The Telluride offered customization options for the screen's appearance, and a 14-speaker Meridian premium audio system was available on higher trims.

Safety

6/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5's last full crash test results were from the 2021 model, which earned top "Good" scores in all crash test areas but missed a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and lane-keep assist. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a Driver Assist Package with enhanced safety technologies.

The 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid had not yet received crash test scores from the NHTSA or IIHS at the time of writing. Standard safety features included frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims offered additional features like a surround-view camera system and automatic reverse braking. The Telluride's highway driving assist was particularly helpful on longer trips, though the blind-spot cameras were more distracting than beneficial.
