Reviews Summary

The Cadillac XT5 offers plenty of the luxury experience for less money and fuss than some of its competitors. Even so, this SUV lacks the driving excitement and engagement that the Europeans offer, and it can’t match the style and tech of the Korean and Japanese brands. If it were our only choice, there’d be little to complain about, but when there are so many other great options in the same segment—including the Lincoln Nautilus, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Genesis GV70, and Porsche Macan—the Cadillac loses some of its shine.

Reviews Summary

With more range, more power, and improved technology, the Chevrolet Bolt EV returns after a three-year hiatus. It also claims the title of the most affordable EV in the U.S., but is due to remain in production only until mid-2027.

Verdict: The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is an excellent choice for shoppers seeking an electric vehicle that won't break the bank. It may not be all that fancy or refined, but it gets the basics right when it comes to range and capabilities.

Look and feel

2023 Cadillac XT5

6/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

5/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 aimed to deliver affordable luxury, but its interior leaned more towards the aesthetic of a high-end Buick or Chevy rather than a true luxury brand. Despite this, the cabin was well-organized and spacious, offering good headroom and legroom in both rows. The XT5 featured a mix of synthetic and genuine leather upholstery, with top trims offering heated seats and a panoramic sunroof. While the cabin's design was intuitive, it felt somewhat dated due to the retention of physical controls, which, although user-friendly, lacked the modern flair seen in competitors like the Porsche Macan and Volvo XC60.

In contrast, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt maintained a familiar exterior design, resembling a conventional gas-powered car more than an EV. The interior, however, underwent significant changes, featuring a larger digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The Bolt's cabin was dominated by hard plastics, reinforcing its budget-friendly nature, but it offered practical storage solutions and a comfortable seating arrangement. The RS trim added a touch of style with Evotex synthetic leather and red stitching. Despite its econobox-like footprint, the Bolt prioritized utility and interior space, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Performance

2023 Cadillac XT5

6/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It offered both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options, with acceleration from 0-60 mph in the high-seven-second range. An available V6 engine delivered 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque, providing a more robust driving experience. However, the XT5 lacked excitement and refinement compared to rivals like the Porsche Macan S and BMW X3. Its handling was decent, but ride quality suffered on rough roads, with noticeable cabin noise and vibration. Fuel economy ranged from 22 mpg city to 29 mpg highway for the turbo-four, and 18/25 mpg for the V6 with AWD.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt featured a new 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, reducing costs and reliance on rare earth minerals. Its motor, sourced from the Chevy Equinox EV, delivered 210 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, achieving 0-60 mph in the low seven-second range. While not the fastest EV, the Bolt offered quick acceleration compared to gas-powered subcompact SUVs. One-pedal driving was available, with adjustable brake regeneration settings. The Bolt's ride was firm but not overly harsh, and its low center of gravity contributed to agile handling. The EPA estimated a range of up to 262 miles on a full charge, with improved charging speed allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in 25 minutes.

Form and function

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

6/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5's interior, though featuring more hard plastics than expected, offered ample storage solutions, including a deep center console bin and large seatback pockets. The cargo area provided 30 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, expanding to 63 cubic feet with the seats folded. This generous capacity was complemented by a wide liftgate opening and low load floor, making it easy to access and utilize. In comparison, the Porsche Macan and Genesis GV70 offered less cargo space, highlighting the XT5's practicality.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt's interior provided an upright driving position with ample space for larger occupants. The rear seats offered good headroom and thigh support, with a flat floor enhancing comfort for center-seat passengers. Cargo capacity was 16.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, with a large bin underneath the floor for additional storage. The rear seatbacks folded flat with the cargo floor, maximizing space. Up front, the Bolt featured a large bin with dividers, a deep center armrest bin, and additional storage pockets, ensuring ample room for personal items.

Technology

2023 Cadillac XT5

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

6/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5 featured the CUE infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system was intuitive and responsive, with physical controls for climate and steering wheel functions. A Bose premium audio system, wireless charging, and navigation were available. The XT5's approach to retaining physical buttons contrasted with rivals like the Porsche Macan, which relied heavily on touch controls, and the Genesis GV70, which incorporated more physical controls into its design.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt came equipped with an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.3-inch center touchscreen, running on a Google-based operating system. While Apple CarPlay and standalone Android Auto were not supported, the system offered logical menus, sharp graphics, and quick responses. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, digital rear-view mirror, and wireless charging pad. The Bolt's navigation system assisted in finding charging stations and preconditioned the battery for optimal charging rates. Additionally, the Bolt offered vehicle-to-load charging capabilities, providing backup power for a home during outages.

Safety

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

7/10

The 2023 Cadillac XT5's last full crash test results were from the 2021 model, which earned top "Good" scores in all crash test areas but missed a Top Safety Pick award due to a "Marginal" headlight score. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and lane-keep assist. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and enhanced automatic emergency braking. The XT5's car seat anchors were noted for being near other hardware, potentially causing confusion.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt had not yet been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but expectations were high based on the 2023 Bolt EUV's performance. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, digital rear-view mirror, and traffic-sign recognition. GM's Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system was available for an additional cost, making the Bolt one of the few budget EVs to offer such advanced technology.
