2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

This midsize Mercedes SUV gets a facelift for 2024 that includes an upgraded interior and infotainment system as well as some new styling cues. Mercedes’ 4matic all-wheel drive system is standard across the lineup, as is seating for five, though a small third row is an option. Models include the GLE 350, GLE 450, and GLE 580, all with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Also on tap are the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. However, new for this year, and the primary tester for this review, is the GLE 450e with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Verdict: A new plug-in hybrid powertrain helps the GLE hit a sweet spot between performance and efficiency. Elsewhere, this is classic Mercedes: big and beautiful with plenty of luxury touches and great space. These aren’t inexpensive SUVs, but then again, Mercedes is one of the principal faces of the pricey luxury market.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

Look and feel

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE exhibited subtle yet impactful aesthetic changes. The headlights and taillights were sharper, and black fender flares adorned the wheel arches. The grille featured chrome inserts, adding a touch of elegance. The optional AMG Line package enhanced the sportiness of the exterior, complemented by standard 19-inch wheels, with an option to upgrade to 21-inch wheels. Inside, the cabin maintained a classic Mercedes-Benz feel, with leather and soft-touch surfaces. The open-pore walnut trim was visually appealing, though the Bahia Brown seating surfaces in the test model gave the interior a dated look. Opting for lighter leather could remedy this design choice.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered a more rugged appeal, especially with the introduction of the Z71 trim, designed for moderate off-roading. The Z71 model, which was the focus of the test drive, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. The interior of the Z71 was highlighted by "Torch Red" accents, adding a vibrant touch to the Jet Black interior. The Traverse's design was practical, with synthetic leather seating as an option, though the standard cloth seats were comfortable and breathable. The overall look was functional, catering to those who appreciate a robust and versatile SUV.

Performance

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the entry-level GLE 350 with 255 horsepower, the mid-line GLE 450 with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, and the top-tier GLE 580 with a 4.0-liter V8. The test vehicle, however, was the new 450e plug-in hybrid, which combined a 2.0-liter turbo inline four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Despite its power, the 450e was about a half-second slower to 60 mph than the GLE 450 due to the weight of its 23.3-kWh battery. The 450e could travel up to 55 miles on electric power alone, and the transition between electric and gas modes was seamless. The 450e featured an 11-kW onboard charger and could accept a 60-kW DC fast charge, making it convenient for road trips.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine provided more power and torque than its predecessor. The Traverse Z71, with its advanced AWD system, offered a capable performance on various terrains. The vehicle's acceleration and passing power were satisfactory, and the exhaust note added a pleasant growl during acceleration. The steering was adequate for most driving conditions, though the Traverse's length was noticeable in tight spaces. The ride quality was commendable, even with the Z71's all-terrain tires and increased ground clearance. The brakes were progressive, and the stop-and-start feature was seamless. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 mpg highway, depending on the drivetrain.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE excelled in interior luxuries, with standard heated front seats and optional ventilation and massage functions. The cabin featured heated and cooled cup holders, customizable ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and soft-close doors. The Burmester stereo system provided an exceptional audio experience. The GLE could tow up to 7,700 pounds and offered Trailer Maneuvering Assist technology. Cargo space was ample, with 31.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 74.9 cubic feet with the second row folded.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered versatile seating configurations, with the base LS model accommodating eight passengers. The LT model introduced second-row captain’s chairs, while the Z71 and RS trims were seven-seaters. The Smart Slide second-row seats were easy to use, and the power-folding third row was a convenient feature. The Autosense power liftgate added to the practicality, allowing easy access to the cargo area. Cargo volume was 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to approximately 96 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Traverse also featured numerous storage compartments, including a hidden storage area under the center console and an underfloor storage bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, though the third row had limited views due to the rear fender design.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE came with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and the MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch screen. The system was user-friendly, with a touchpad on the center console and voice command capabilities. The augmented reality navigation system was a standout feature, providing clear directions. The GLE also included an off-road page in the MBUX system, offering detailed information for enthusiasts. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, though connectivity issues were noted during testing. Multiple USB-C ports ensured devices remained charged.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse featured a significant upgrade with a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, standard across all models. The system was responsive, with simple menus and Google-based software. An 11-inch digital instrument display provided essential information, enhancing navigation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, along with a wireless charging pad. Physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated, though the placement of the driving mode button and headlight controls was less intuitive. The Traverse introduced Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, expanding its functionality to single-lane roadways.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of advanced driver aids, with blind-spot monitoring as standard. The optional Driver Assistance Package Plus added features like active blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The GLE received a five-star side crash rating and a four-star rollover rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS awarded the GLE top scores in crashworthiness and crash avoidance, with an "Acceptable" headlight rating for models with the Digital Light package.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS at the time of testing. However, it came equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control.
