2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The changes included clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. The GLE 450e model, in particular, stood out with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, which added a touch of elegance. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The interior offered a variety of choices, including 10 interior color options and five trim selections, ensuring a high-quality and robust cabin experience.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue maintained a rugged yet appealing design, with proper proportions and chiseled styling. The Rogue lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $27,360 to $37,140, plus a destination charge. The Platinum trim, which we tested, came with a host of upscale features, including diamond-pattern leather seats and a range of interior and exterior enhancements. Despite its entry-luxury price, the Rogue Platinum offered a comfortable and well-appointed cabin, though it lacked some of the refinement found in the GLE.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a diverse range of powertrains, catering to various SUV shoppers. The lineup included the GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450e, and GLE 580, with additional AMG models like the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. The top-of-the-line AMG GLE 63 S boasted a twin-turbo V8 engine producing 603 horsepower, delivering sports car-like speed. The GLE 450e, with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor, generated a combined 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. It offered impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, and provided a seamless transition between gas and electric power. The GLE 450e's suspension and handling were commendable, ensuring a smooth and quiet ride.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue featured a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine with variable compression technology, producing 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Rogue offered Eco, Auto, and Sport driving modes, with additional Off-Road and Snow modes for AWD versions. While the VC-Turbo powertrain improved urban and suburban driving, it lacked highway passing power. The Rogue's fuel economy fell short of expectations, averaging 28.9 mpg in combined driving. The SUV's ride quality and handling were generally good, though the steering felt lifeless, and the rear seat comfort was lacking.

Form and function

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in both the first and second rows, with a light and airy cabin feel. The GLE 450e offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, comparable to rivals like the BMW X5. While the GLE had an optional third-row seat, it was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 models and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. Additional options included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue served as a practical family vehicle, accommodating four people comfortably and a fifth person when needed. The Platinum trim offered premium features like a triple-zone automatic climate control system, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, and heated front seats. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seat designs provided comfort, though the rear seat lacked leg support. The SUV's cargo space was generous, with up to 36.5 cubic feet behind the back seat and 74.1 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Rogue's Divide-N-Hide feature allowed for versatile cargo configurations.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main infotainment display. The system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel occasionally caused issues, such as unexpected volume changes.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or optional 9-inch touchscreen display. The test vehicle had the larger screen, along with Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wired Android Auto. The Rogue Platinum also featured a Bose premium audio system and a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display. However, the Alexa Built-in system struggled with voice recognition, leading to inaccurate responses. The head-up display worked well, though it was not tested with polarized sunglasses.

Safety

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came equipped with a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. The optional Driver Assistance package added features like active blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. These systems were unobtrusive during everyday driving and provided an extra layer of safety.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue offered a wide range of safety features, including 10 airbags, Safety Shield 360, and a rear-seat reminder system. Higher trim levels included ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received lower scores in specific crash tests.
