2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. Up close, the new Mercedes star logos on the front grille were a clever addition, and changes to the headlights and taillights were more apparent when compared side-by-side with the previous model. The GLE 450e we tested featured standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights, adding to its appeal. The vehicle's Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, though slightly pricey at $1,100, enhanced its overall look.

Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. These additions, costing $1,620 and $160 respectively, were considered money well spent. The GLE offered a variety of choices with 10 interior color options and five trims, including brushed aluminum and black piano lacquer. The cabin was one of the highest quality and most robust-looking in its segment.

The 2023 Ford Bronco stood out with its retro-cool styling and modern engineering across nine distinct trim levels. Its blocky shape, wide horizontal grille, and big round headlights were unmistakable. The Base trim had a primitive look with steel wheels, while the Raptor trim showcased a wide stance, elevated height, and massive tires. The new Heritage trim added a nostalgic touch with a white grille, roof, and wheels, along with unique plaid seat upholstery.

The Bronco's interior continued the rugged theme with a broad dash and sealed switches and buttons for easy cleaning. The marine-grade vinyl upholstery and drain plugs in the floor made it practical for off-road adventures. Sturdy handholds and a grid-like mesh on the seat backs added to its functionality. While the materials were designed for durability rather than luxury, the Bronco's interior was quieter than a comparable Jeep Wrangler.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Ford Bronco

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains to suit various SUV shoppers, starting at approximately $63,805. The lineup included the GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450e, and GLE 580, along with two AMG models, the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. Engine options ranged from turbocharged four- and six-cylinders to a twin-turbo V8 producing 603 horsepower in the AMG GLE 63 S. The GLE 450e, with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and electric motor, delivered a combined output of 381 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, reaching 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

The GLE 450e's electric-only driving range was estimated at 40 miles, and it could operate as an EV at speeds up to 87 mph. The transition from gas to electric power was seamless, and the nine-speed automatic transmission performed flawlessly. The suspension absorbed bumps effortlessly, and the vehicle's sophisticated steering made it feel maneuverable despite its size. The GLE 450e exceeded performance expectations with its quiet cabin and smooth ride.

The 2023 Ford Bronco offered three engine choices. The base 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine produced 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, available with a seven-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission. The optional 2.7-liter V6 engine increased power to 330 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, while the top-of-the-line Bronco Raptor featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 418 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. All Broncos came with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case.

The base four-cylinder engine was adequate for most on- and off-road adventures, while the 2.7-liter V6 was better suited for the heavier four-door model. The Raptor's EcoBoost engine provided an exhilarating experience. The Bronco's ride quality was bouncier than a typical family SUV but more stable than a Jeep Wrangler. The Bronco's high-riding dimensions required careful handling on curving roads, but it felt more confident than expected. The four-door model was easier to maneuver, especially with the help of several cameras.

Form and function

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in both the first and second rows. The GLE 450e's light beige upholstery contributed to a light and airy cabin feel, and outward visibility was excellent. The vehicle offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, comparable to the BMW X5 but less than the Cadillac XT6 and Volvo XC90. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 and was suitable only for young children.

Standard comfort features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof, and a power liftgate. The Exclusive trim added a Burmester surround-sound audio system, ventilated front seats, and augmented reality navigation. The Pinnacle trim included massaging front seats, a head-up display, and heated and cooled front cupholders. Additional options on the GLE 450e included a panoramic sunroof, illuminated running boards, and soft-close doors.

The 2023 Ford Bronco's boxy shape provided ample interior space. The four-door model was recommended for those regularly shuttling passengers, as accessing the rear seats in the two-door required some effort. The front offered plenty of storage options, including netted door pockets and a rubberized tray for phones. Accessory rails atop the dash and a USB jack added convenience.

The two-door Bronco had 22.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 52.3 cubic feet with the seats folded. The four-door model offered 35.6 cubic feet and 77.6 cubic feet, respectively. The rear seats didn't fold flat, creating a step-up that hindered sliding longer cargo and sleeping comfortably. The Bronco's fenders and doors were easily removable, except for the Raptor's oversized fenders.

Technology

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with two 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main infotainment screen. The system could be controlled via touch commands, a control pad on the center console, or touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system.

The head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive control on the steering wheel could inadvertently increase the music volume while maneuvering. Overall, the GLE's technology was feature-rich but required a learning curve.

The 2023 Ford Bronco used technology to enhance its off-road capabilities. The G.O.A.T. drive modes optimized engine and suspension settings for various terrains, making it easier for novices to tackle challenging conditions. Experienced off-roaders could manually select features through buttons. The numerous camera views were invaluable in tight spots, and the Trail Turn Assist feature allowed for sharp turns.

The Bronco's infotainment system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Ford's SYNC 4. A wireless charging pad was available, and most Broncos came with an eight-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch display as an option.

Safety

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came with a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, hands-free park assist, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and a driver attention monitor. The optional Driver Assistance package added active blind-spot assist, active lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and evasive steering assist.

The 2023 Ford Bronco received four out of five stars for frontal crash protection and three stars for rollover protection from the NHTSA. The IIHS awarded the four-door Bronco its best score of "Good" in most crashworthiness tests. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, trailer-sway assist, and Trail Turn Assist. The Mid package added blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The High package included front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system, while the Luxe package added adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist.
