2023 Kia Telluride Reviews SummaryKia can barely keep up with demand for the Telluride, and its dealers and customers have told the company not to change a single thing, so you’d think it unnecessary for the automaker to invest a single penny upgrading the popular three-row crossover SUV. Kia would disagree. This year, the 2023 Telluride gets minor styling changes, new technologies, and some off-roading attitude in the form of new X-Line and X-Pro trim levels. We headed to San Antonio, Texas, which has somehow become the seventh most populous city in the U.S., to sample the Telluride’s new kit. And we remain impressed with this excellent family-size sport-ute.
2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews SummaryThough Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that. Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

The 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro models showcased a refreshed design with updated front and rear styling, new headlights and taillights, and a selection of new paint colors like Midnight Lake Blue and Dawning Red. The interior also received subtle updates, including new color options such as Terracotta and Navy, alongside a modernized digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The X-Line and X-Pro trims added a rugged appeal with features like raised suspension and unique wheel designs, enhancing the Telluride's off-road capabilities.
In contrast, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 maintained its classic design, which has aged gracefully since its debut in 2017. The new Carbon Turbo trim introduced fresh paint options like Zircon Sand and exclusive interior features such as Terracotta leather seats. While the exterior remained largely unchanged, Mazda focused on enhancing the driving experience with improved fuel economy for the base engine and added wireless charging and connectivity features. The CX-5's design continued to reflect Mazda's commitment to a sleek and modern aesthetic.

The 2023 Kia Telluride retained its robust 3.8-liter V6 engine, delivering 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered various driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, and Sport, with an AWD system featuring a low-speed Lock setting for off-road adventures. The Telluride X-Line and X-Pro trims boasted improved ground clearance and off-road capabilities, with the X-Pro offering a towing capacity of 5,500 pounds. Fuel efficiency varied, with the X-Line averaging 24.1 mpg and the X-Pro at 20.4 mpg, according to real-world tests.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo, equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, produced 256 horsepower on premium gas and 227 horsepower on regular gas. Despite its power, the CX-5 Turbo's performance was more gradual, rewarding a steady driving style. The EPA rated its fuel economy at 24 mpg combined, though real-world tests showed 22.9 mpg. The CX-5's driving dynamics were enhanced by a re-tuned suspension and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology, providing a smooth and responsive ride. With a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, the CX-5 was less suited for heavy-duty tasks compared to the Telluride.
The 2023 Kia Telluride offered spacious seating for seven or eight passengers, with premium Nappa leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. The SX Prestige trim included heated and ventilated front and second-row seats, enhancing comfort. The Telluride's interior was roomy, with a power lumbar stabilization system for long trips. The second-row seats provided easy access to the third row, which was more comfortable than many competitors. Cargo space was generous, with 21 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 87 cubic feet with all seats folded.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5, while smaller in interior space, provided a comfortable and supportive cabin for four adults. The redesigned heated front seats offered six-way power adjustment for the driver, and the rear seats featured good support and amenities like air conditioning vents and a center armrest. The CX-5's cabin quality rivaled luxury brands, though storage space was limited compared to competitors. It offered 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet with the seats folded.
The 2023 Kia Telluride came standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The system's voice recognition performed well, though climate controls required manual adjustment. Kia's digital-key technology allowed smartphones to function as vehicle keys, and the Full Display Mirror provided a video view of the rear. The Telluride also included Driver Talk and Quiet Mode features, enhancing communication and comfort for passengers.
Mazda's approach to technology in the 2024 CX-5 focused on minimizing driver distraction, with traditional controls for essential functions. The 10.25-inch display allowed touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with wireless connectivity available on several trims. Mazda Connected Services offered remote engine starting and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The CX-5's infotainment system used a console-mounted knob for navigation, though its native voice interface was less intuitive than competitors. A 10-speaker Bose sound system was standard on the Carbon Turbo trim, adding to the premium feel.
The 2023 Kia Telluride featured an extensive list of standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. New for 2023 were junction turning assistance and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist. Highway Drive Assist 2.0 provided semi-autonomous driving capabilities, and the SX trim added advanced collision avoidance features. A Rear Occupant Alert system with ultrasonic sensors was also standard, enhancing safety for families.
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 included essential ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims offered adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature added a driver monitoring system and surround-view camera. The CX-5 received five-star ratings from the NHTSA, though it did not earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick designation for 2024.
