2023 Acura MDX Reviews Summary

Guided by a new "Precision Crafted Performance" ethos, Acura has come a long way in the past six years. Though it canceled its NSX sports car and eliminated the sport-hybrid powertrain from its vehicles, Acura’s four remaining cars and SUVs boast appealing designs, satisfying driving character, and modern technologies. The 2023 Acura MDX is the midsize three-row crossover SUV of the lineup, last redesigned just one year ago. This year, Acura improves the 2023 MDX with a complimentary three-year subscription to AcuraLink connected services and scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

This midsize Mercedes SUV gets a facelift for 2024 that includes an upgraded interior and infotainment system as well as some new styling cues. Mercedes’ 4matic all-wheel drive system is standard across the lineup, as is seating for five, though a small third row is an option. Models include the GLE 350, GLE 450, and GLE 580, all with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Also on tap are the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. However, new for this year, and the primary tester for this review, is the GLE 450e with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Verdict: A new plug-in hybrid powertrain helps the GLE hit a sweet spot between performance and efficiency. Elsewhere, this is classic Mercedes: big and beautiful with plenty of luxury touches and great space. These aren’t inexpensive SUVs, but then again, Mercedes is one of the principal faces of the pricey luxury market.

2023 Acura MDX

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2023 Acura MDX presented in two versions: the standard and the Type S, each with specific trim packages enhancing the array of equipment. The standard variants came with available Technology, A-Spec, and Advance packages, while the MDX Type S offered a base specification or an Advance upgrade. Prices ranged from $49,550 to $73,200, plus a $1,195 destination charge.

Our test vehicle, the Type S Advance, arrived with an Apex Blue Pearl paint job and an Orchid interior. The MSRP hit $74,995, setting high expectations for luxury and driving performance. The design subtly communicated its capabilities with chicane-design LED running lights and taillights, along with 21-inch wheels giving it a commanding stance. Quad exhaust outlets and a rear diffuser panel enhanced its athletic look.

Inside, all MDX models boasted a panoramic sunroof and Iconic Drive ambient lighting themes named after renowned racetracks. The Type S Advance trim added perforated Milano leather, aluminum interior trim, open-pore wood, and a leather-wrapped dashboard. While generally appealing, the tapered body could misleadingly appear dented from certain angles, and the gloss black plastic on the dashboard complicated the use of some controls.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE showcased subtle aesthetic enhancements with sharper headlights and taillights and the addition of black fender flares. The grille received chrome inserts for a more refined look. Our AMG Line package tester, featuring a unique grille, contributed to a sporty appeal. While 19-inch wheels were standard, optional 21-inch wheels were available.

The GLE coupe, targeting those favoring style over interior space, maintained a luxurious cabin with diverse leather and soft-touch surfaces. The optional open-pore walnut trim added a vintage flare when combined with Bahia Brown seating, better avoided for lighter interior hues to ensure a modern aesthetic.

Performance

2023 Acura MDX

4/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The standout feature of the 2023 Acura MDX Type S was its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, delivering 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the standard 3.5-liter V6, these figures marked significant increases, despite the Type S being 285 pounds heavier. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain utilized Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, which was capable of directing up to 70% of output to a single rear wheel. The Integrated Dynamics System offered Snow, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes.

Despite these enhancements, the MDX Type S struggled to provide a cohesive driving experience. The handling, characterized by an indecisive transmission and lack of ride compliance, detracted from an otherwise thrilling ride. Fuel consumption was notably high, with city driving yielding 17 mpg and an overall 16.9 mpg average during our test drive.

The 2024 GLE offered a range of engines, from the base GLE 350's 255 horsepower four-cylinder to the top-tier GLE 580's 4.0-liter V8. Our test vehicle, the GLE 450e plug-in hybrid, combined a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder with an electric motor to produce 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The plug-in hybrid maintained a smooth transition between electric and gas power, with up to 55 miles of all-electric range.

While boasting respectable performance metrics, the GLE 450e prioritized comfort over sporty driving dynamics, making it a suitable choice for a relaxed commute rather than aggressive driving.

Form and function

2023 Acura MDX

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

Acura ensured the 2023 MDX excelled in practicality with its three-row seating and spacious cargo area. The Type S Advance trim provided 16-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage features, although the firm seat design was not ideal for dynamic driving. Seven-passenger seating was standard, with flexible configurations to accommodate different passenger and cargo needs.

Cargo capacity stood at 18.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 39.1 cubic feet with the row folded and 71.4 cubic feet with both rear rows down. The well-thought-out storage solutions, including an underfloor bin and grocery bag hooks, proved beneficial.

The 450e variant made up for its less dynamic driving experience with interior luxuries like heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats, customizable ambient lighting, and a silent cabin. The GLE lacked extending sun visors, a notable downside in an otherwise well-equipped interior.

Towing capacity was impressive at 7,700 pounds, thanks to the new Trailer Maneuvering Assist technology. Cargo space was vast, offering 31.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 74.9 cubic feet with the second row folded.

Technology

2023 Acura MDX

The Acura Digital Precision Cockpit featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and infotainment display but lacked a touch interface. Instead, users interacted with the True Touchpad Interface (TTI) on the center console, which, despite good intentions, added complexity and reduced storage space. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa Built-In.

Additional features comprised a 10.5-inch head-up display, SiriusXM, and AcuraLink services. The top-tier ELS Studio 3D audio system delivered exceptional sound quality, although the overall infotainment experience was hindered by the cumbersome touchpad interface.

The GLE showcased a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and MBUX infotainment system, avoiding the larger screens found in other Mercedes models. The system was user-friendly and could be controlled via a touchpad or voice commands using “Hey, Mercedes.” Augmented reality navigation proved highly effective, overlaying crucial information on the navigation screen.

Despite some connectivity issues with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the inclusion of USB-C ports throughout the cabin ensured devices remained charged. The off-road information page, while potentially underused, provided comprehensive data including altitude and tire conditions.

Safety

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

Acura Watch, the MDX's suite of safety features, included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping and centering assistance, and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle also featured blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, with advanced trims adding parking sensors and a surround-view camera system.

The MDX obtained favorable safety ratings, being named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS and earning a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. However, it encountered some inaccuracies, such as misinterpreting overhead signs as obstacles.

The GLE offered comprehensive safety features, such as standard blind-spot monitoring and optional packages providing advanced lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and lane-change assist. These systems were reliable, but adding the Driver Assistance Package Plus increased the price substantially.

The GLE received a five-star rating in side crashes and a four-star rollover rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS awarded it high marks for all evaluated categories, further establishing the GLE's reputation for safety.
