2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2024 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

Verdict: The Jeep Wrangler is still one of the best off-roading vehicles available, and the 4xe's plug-in hybrid powertrain offers fuel-saving capability, along with plenty of low-end, all-electric torque. While still a bit of a bear to drive on paved roads, few vehicles offer the sort of style and rugged performance that a Wrangler 4xe does.

The Jeep Wrangler has been the star of the off-roading show for decades, only recently facing real competition in the form of the Ford Bronco. Now five years into its fourth generation, the venerable Wrangler gets a mid-cycle refresh that focuses on technology, safety, and refinement—with just a splash of upgraded capability thrown in for good measure.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. The front grille featured clever Mercedes star logos, and the headlights and taillights saw minor updates. Standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights were available. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, looked particularly handsome. The interior of the GLE 450e exuded class and luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of choices, including 10 interior color options and five trims, making it one of the highest quality cabins in its segment.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler retained its iconic burly, body-on-frame look, with larger tires on the Rubicon X and Rubicon 392 trims. The redesigned grille, first seen on the 2023 20th Anniversary edition of the Wrangler Rubicon, allowed for more airflow into the engine bay. The integrated antenna in the windshield prevented snagging on bushes and tree branches during off-roading. The Wrangler offered various roof options, including a traditional soft-top, full hard top, retractable sunroof, and power-retractable sunroof. The windshield could fold down, and the doors could be removed, providing a customizable open-air experience. The Wrangler's rugged design and versatility made it a favorite among adventure enthusiasts.

2024 Jeep Wrangler

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, starting at approximately $63,805. The lineup included the GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450e, and GLE 580, with two additional AMG models, the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. The engines ranged from turbocharged four- and six-cylinders to a twin-turbo V8 producing 603 horsepower in the AMG GLE 63 S. The GLE 450e, with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and electric motor, delivered a combined output of 381 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque. It could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The GLE 450e's electric mode allowed for silent highway driving at speeds up to 87 mph. The transition from gas to electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler offered various powertrains, including a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower, a plug-in hybrid version with 375 horsepower, a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower, and a 6.4-liter V8 engine with 470 horsepower. The Wrangler featured different transfer cases for varying levels of off-road capability. The 4xe PHEV Wrangler combined the 2.0-liter engine with electric motors, offering 21 miles of all-electric range. The 4xe Rubicon, with front and rear locking differentials and the new Offroad+ button, excelled in both sand dune driving and rock crawling. The solid front and rear axles provided excellent articulation, and the BF Goodrich KO2 tires offered strong off-road grip. The Wrangler's ride quality on pavement remained bumpy, but sound deadening material improved cabin quietness.

Form and function

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in both the first and second rows. The cabin, with light beige upholstery, felt airy and offered excellent outward visibility. The GLE 450e had 33 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, comparable to the BMW X5 but less than the Cadillac XT6 and Volvo XC90. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 and was suitable only for young children. Standard features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power sunroof, and a power liftgate. The Exclusive and Pinnacle trim levels added features like a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler's big news was its upgraded towing capacity, now rated at 5,000 pounds for four-door Rubicon-trim Wranglers with specific engines and tires. Inside, the Wrangler offered heated seats and a heated steering wheel, with new 12-way power adjustable front seats. The 4xe model featured a 30-amp Power Box for powering accessories. The Wrangler's interior remained rugged and functional, with options for different roof configurations and removable doors. The new Power Box and increased towing capacity added to the Wrangler's versatility.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with two 12.3-inch screens. The system could be controlled via touch commands, a control pad, or touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The head-up display and augmented reality navigation provided clear and convenient directions. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be overly sensitive, causing occasional issues.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler came with a 12.3-inch center infotainment screen running Uconnect5. The system was faster and more user-friendly than previous versions, with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Off-Road Pages provided detailed information on transmission temperature, battery charge, pitch and roll gauges, and drivetrain indicators. The Trails Offroad feature offered access to over 200 trails, with the option to subscribe for access to 3,000 trails. Other new features included a wireless hotspot, dual Bluetooth phone pairing, and the ability to store up to five user profiles.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came with a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, hands-free park assist, rain-sensing wipers, automatic high-beam headlights, and a driver attention monitor. The optional Driver Assistance package added active blind-spot assist, active lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and evasive steering assist. These features were unobtrusive during everyday driving and provided an extra layer of safety.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler introduced first- and second-row side-curtain airbags. Forward collision warning was standard on all but the base model, while blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and park assist were optional. The Wrangler lacked lane-keeping assist and other highway assist features. The 2024 Wrangler had not yet been rated by the NHTSA or IIHS, but the 2023 model received four-out-of-five stars for frontal crash protection and three-out-of-five stars for rollover protection. The IIHS rated the four-door Wrangler as "Good" in roof strength and head restraints but "Moderate" in frontal and side crashes.
