2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class sits at the top of the automaker’s luxury SUV range. The three-row GLS is the biggest SUV Mercedes offers, and the “S” in its names signifies its status as the SUV equivalent of Mercedes’ flagship S-Class sedan.

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Mercedes withdrew most of its V8 models from the United States for the 2022 model year, leaving only the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic model. The automaker is expected to begin resuming dealer orders for V8 models as you read this, though, so the GLS 580 4Matic, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600 4Matic models should return to showrooms soon. Because it was the only version available at the time, we tested a GLS 450 for this review.

2023 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Kia can barely keep up with demand for the Telluride, and its dealers and customers have told the company not to change a single thing, so you’d think it unnecessary for the automaker to invest a single penny upgrading the popular three-row crossover SUV.

Kia would disagree.

This year, the 2023 Telluride gets minor styling changes, new technologies, and some off-roading attitude in the form of new X-Line and X-Pro trim levels. We headed to San Antonio, Texas, which has somehow become the seventh most populous city in the U.S., to sample the Telluride’s new kit. And we remain impressed with this excellent family-size sport-ute.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2023 Kia Telluride

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, particularly in its base GLS 450 form, offered a more subtle and understated look compared to competitors like the Cadillac Escalade or the Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes avoided the ostentatious grille designs seen on the BMW X7 and Lexus LX. However, buyers had more dramatic visual options with the AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions. The AMG model featured flared wheel arches, a more muscular grille and front bumper, prominent rectangular exhaust tips, and 21-inch AMG-specific wheels. On the other hand, the Maybach version was laden with chrome and featured a traditional hood ornament and power running boards, along with 23-inch wheels.

Interior-wise, the base GLS maintained a high level of luxury, even without features like reclining seats. It included leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. Details such as intricate speaker grilles and rugged rectangular air vents contributed to its upscale yet practical feel. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were seamlessly integrated, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the interior.

During our evaluation of the 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro models, we noticed new front and rear styling, updated headlights and taillights, and fresh wheel designs. The Telluride also introduced new paint colors like Midnight Lake Blue and Jungle Green, and interior colors like Terracotta and Sage Green. The X-Line model replaced the Nightfall Edition, featuring a raised suspension, unique grille design, and black 20-inch wheels. The X-Pro model went further with exclusive 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires for a more aggressive off-road appearance.

Inside, Kia’s updates were more subtle. A significant addition was the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, placed alongside a digital instrumentation panel under a curved 24-inch piece of glass. The interior also received new colors, minor trim updates, and a redesigned steering wheel. The center console improvements made it more functional, and the X-Line and X-Pro trims showcased their specific trim names on the front seatbacks.

It was paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and assisted by the EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, which could temporarily add 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The GLS 450 featured standard 4Matic all-wheel drive and offered a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds.

The 2023 Kia Telluride continued with its 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
