2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

Jeep is now a luxury brand. That's why the 2022 Grand Cherokee L can ask, with a straight face, that you pay up to $70,000 for the privilege of ownership. But because Jeep is a proudly American brand, a war veteran that helped Allied troops defeat fascism, the company has earned the kind of unvarnished reputation and universal praise given only to a handful of U.S. presidents.

As such, a $60,000 Wrangler or a $100,000 Grand Wagoneer doesn't seem snooty, while a Mercedes-Benz or a Lexus sure does. Jeep's heritage as a hardcore 4x4 brand and its newer image as a bougie city truck maker can coexist. We took a Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve across Tennessee to prove it.

2023 Honda Pilot Reviews Summary

Fully redesigned for 2023 with a more rugged appearance, more power, and even more thoughtful convenience items, the new Honda Pilot crossover offers high levels of comfort, useful tech features, and an off-road-capable TrailSport model. It's easy to see why it's one of the best choices in the ultra-competitive midsize three-row crossover SUV class.

Look and feel
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L
9/10
2023 Honda Pilot
7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was a testament to Jeep's ingenuity in stretching its standard two-row Grand Cherokee template to accommodate a third row of seats with style and grace. With an increased length of 11.4 inches and an extended wheelbase of 5 inches, this model offered more legroom for second-row passengers and broader rear doors, making the standard Grand Cherokee appear truncated. The Grand Cherokee L first hit the market as a 2021 model, preceding the two-row version by almost a year, which perhaps contributed to its seamless body design portraying an elegant, well-proportioned look from every angle. Distinctly Jeep with its seven-slot grille, U-shaped wheel arches, and blunt front end, the Grand Cherokee L also featured modern slimmer and brighter lighting, with a paint finish and panel fit that were visibly superior.

For 2022, Jeep upped the ante by introducing new exterior paint colors: Ember, Hydro Blue, and Midnight Sky. Irrespective of the trim level, from the base Laredo to the plush Summit Reserve, the Grand Cherokee L boasted an impressive stance. High-end trims like the Summit and Summit Reserve enhanced the design further with black roofs, larger wheels, and additional chrome. Internally, the Grand Cherokee L exuded luxury. The use of high-resolution screens, real wood, aluminum, quilted Nappa leather, a faux-suede roof, and an overall premium interior layout felt like money well expended, outshining even some Mercedes models with which it shared no parts. While the detailing in all-black interiors maintained passenger comfort, the lighter tan leather added an extra touch of luxury, though it demanded cleaner hands and feet from the occupants.

Switch over to the 2023 Honda Pilot, which sported a freshly redesigned, more rugged look. Taller, wider, and longer than its predecessor—the new Pilot stood 3.4 inches longer, up to 1.5 inches wider, and 0.8 inches taller. A more upright grille and boxier silhouette enhanced its substantial appearance, harmonizing perfectly with the Pilot's all-terrain-capable TrailSport model which gained authentic off-road parts. This included a one-inch taller ride height, unique 18-inch wheels, chunky all-terrain tires, and underbody skid plates robust enough to support the vehicle's full weight.

The Pilot's interior was more traditionally styled, yet highly functional and versatile. Though it may not have matched the overt aesthetic flair of the Jeep, the Pilot held its own with materials quality meeting modern standards. Its functional design emphasized utility without compromising its attractiveness. Honda managed to smartly balance form with function, making the new 2023 Pilot an optimal family SUV with a tidy, utilitarian aesthetic that improved significantly from its previous generation.

Performance

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered a choice between two familiar engines: a 3.6-liter V6 producing 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and a 5.7-liter V8 that churned out 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, available in either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). However, the actual driving experience varied significantly between the two engines. The V6 engine, particularly in a hefty vehicle like the Grand Cherokee L, demanded high revs to access its full power, often resulting in a noisy and somewhat coarse experience under acceleration. The transmission's early upshifts didn't help much, while Sport mode, despite keeping the revs high, failed to sync well with the V6. The V8, on the other hand, not only provided sufficient power but also delivered a fabulous engine note.

The Grand Cherokee L also offered a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant which paired a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack and two electric motors, collectively producing 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Notably, this model had not been tested at the time. The fuel economy figures were decent for the V6 model, at 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, while the V8 lagged behind at 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

Despite the engine's shortcomings, the Grand Cherokee L's chassis was commendable. The precise ride composure and excellent steering feel were noteworthy for a vehicle of its size. The optional air suspension allowed for different ride heights catering to various driving conditions, and its dynamic adjustment between comfort and firmness was exceptional. Off-road, the Grand Cherokee L had respectable capabilities with five ride height settings and select driving modes akin to Land Rover's Terrain Response system. While great at handling rougher trails, it was more poised as an everyday family SUV optimized for on-road comfort, with a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds with 4WD.

In contrast, the 2023 Honda Pilot introduced an all-new 3.5-liter V6 engine generating 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This was coupled with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, standard with front-wheel drive (FWD) and optional with all-wheel drive (AWD) in all models, while being standard in Elite and TrailSport trims. The new V6 offered quick initial acceleration with minimal lag. Although the power felt adequate rather than extraordinary, the braking and stopping responses were smooth and precise, befitting a family SUV.

Driving the 2023 Honda Pilot provided a good balance between confidence and comfort. While there was noticeable body roll in corners, it was controlled, and the vehicle's tuning prioritized comfort over sporty handling. Light steering was a boon for maneuvering in tight spaces, although it felt detached during highway driving. The TrailSport trim, with its increased ground clearance and all-terrain tires, added a subtle vibration on pavement, but it underlined the trim's off-road readiness without compromising overall comfort. The Pilot was able to handle both city driving and adventurous outings effectively, making it a versatile choice for family endeavors.

Form and function

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L emphasized simplicity with its Uconnect 5 infotainment system, known for its sleek interface and physical switches which made controlling climate and audio systems a breeze. Depending on the trim level, touchscreens ranged from 8.4 inches in lower trims to 10.1 inches in the Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve models. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee L excelled in interior space. It accommodated adults comfortably in all three rows, especially with the optional second-row captain’s chairs. Storage compartments were ample, including a wireless charging bin and a large central cubby. Despite these advantages, the cabin suffered from limited airflow due to small air vents, necessitating high fan settings that could be quite loud.

In terms of cargo space, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered generous room in both passenger and cargo capacities. With the third row in use, the Grand Cherokee L could carry a substantial amount of gear, making it an excellent choice for family trips or long hauls.

On the other hand, the 2023 Honda Pilot featured an interior aligned closely with its other models but retained a dash shelf that compensated for its less flashy design. The entry-level trims came with a seven-inch touchscreen, while higher trims boasted a nine-inch display. The top Elite trim included features like a head-up display and a fully digital instrument panel. The central console provided excellent storage solutions with a capacious bin able to fit a full-sized tablet.

Unique to the Pilot was the stowable second-row center seat that, when removed, facilitated easy access to the third row—perfect for families with child seats in use. Ample space in the second row accommodated adults comfortably, whereas the third row, suitable for short trips, offered less support. The Pilot excelled in cargo space, with a maximum of 114.3 cubic feet—a significant improvement over the cargo capacity of its rival Kia Telluride. Even with the third row up, the Pilot held a commendable 22.4 cubic feet of cargo, catering to various storage needs effectively.

The upper trims of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L equaled luxury vehicles with features like multi-mode massage seats, a head-up display, night vision with pedestrian and animal detection, a 360-degree camera system, and an Active Driving Assist system. The navigation system utilized the instrument panel for precise, zoomed-in guidance. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration were seamless, deactivating the factory navigation when a phone was connected. The infotainment system also offered a rear-facing camera for monitoring the third row. Advanced features like an optional front passenger display and Amazon Fire TV-equipped rear touchscreens were notable additions, though the lower trim levels had more basic audio systems.

In contrast, the 2023 Honda Pilot's technological features shone, particularly in the EX-L trim and above, which included a larger infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and USB ports in every row. The Elite trim added a head-up display and a fully digital instrument panel. While the graphics might not have been cutting-edge, the infotainment system’s functionality was straightforward and responsive. Additional features included Honda's CabinTalk PA system for in-car communication, and higher trims introduced a multi-view camera system, Bose premium audio, navigation, and smartphone app integration.

Safety

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L came with standard safety features including driver and passenger knee airbags, a rear seat alert, trailer sway control, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear parking sensors. However, at the time of review, it had not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2023 Honda Pilot, while awaiting NHTSA crash test results, confidently aimed for high scores and received a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS. Standard across all trims were forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic-jam assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Upgrading to the EX-L added low-speed automatic braking and parking sensors, with higher trims like TrailSport and Elite including surround-view camera systems. The advanced safety features were well-tuned, providing a smooth and false-alarm-free safety experience.
