2022 Subaru Outback Reviews Summary

The wilderness beckons and Subaru owners frequently answer the call. They modify and outfit their Subies for improved capabilities in the great outdoors, but in the process, they risk reducing the effectiveness of the carefully calibrated EyeSight driving aids that now come standard on most of the automaker's models. To address this EyeSight calibration problem while giving its owners the improved off-road capabilities they seek, Subaru presents the all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness, the first of several so-themed SUVs planned for the automaker's product pipeline.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

7/10

2022 Subaru Outback

7/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited, priced at $42,083, presented a blend of practicality and style, though its cost seemed steep for a RAV4. Despite being fully loaded, it maintained a modest appearance, similar to rental car models. The vehicle's design could have benefited from larger wheels or an Adventure trim level, akin to its non-hybrid counterpart. Its electronic AWD system, however, was not equipped for such enhancements. The RAV4 Hybrid exuded a rugged charm, needing only bolder wheels to enhance its tough look. Inside, it offered a mix of stylish and functional elements, though quality varied with some materials appearing less premium. A notable issue was a rattle from the license plate on the tailgate, detracting from the overall experience.

In contrast, the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness redefined the Outback's station wagon identity, leaning more towards a Jeep-like presence. It featured a 9.5-inch ground clearance, aggressive all-terrain tires, and improved approach and departure angles due to redesigned bumpers. The Wilderness stood out with a unique grille, black 17-inch wheels, and Anodized Copper accents. Its roof rack supported a 700-pound static load, ideal for rooftop camping. Inside, the cabin was dominated by dark gray StarTex upholstery, which was water-repellant but lacked ventilated seats, making it less comfortable in hot weather. The interior was accented with Anodized Copper stitching and brushed aluminum pedals, creating a rugged yet stylish environment.

Performance

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

8/10

2022 Subaru Outback

8/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors, producing 219 horsepower. This setup provided standard AWD and several driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, Trail, and EV. The RAV4 Hybrid weighed between 3,690 and 3,780 pounds, offering lively acceleration due to instant electric-motor torque. However, the engine's sound was unpleasant at high revs. The EPA rated it at 40 mpg in combined driving, and testing showed an average of 39.7 mpg. The CVT operated smoothly, and the regenerative braking system was effective. The RAV4 Hybrid's suspension design and Active Cornering Assist system enhanced ride and handling, though the tires lacked grip, affecting cornering performance. It excelled as a daily driver, absorbing bumps and maintaining stability, with 8.1 inches of ground clearance for light off-roading.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, providing ample power for its 3,896-pound weight. It had a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and an EPA rating of 24 mpg in combined driving, though testing showed 21.3 mpg on a mountainous route. The CVT, with eight programmed ratios, offered paddle shifters but lacked the engagement of a dual-clutch transmission. The Wilderness trim included AWD, 9.5 inches of ground clearance, and all-terrain tires, enhancing off-road capability. It had improved approach, breakover, and departure angles, a skid plate, and a dual-function X-Mode traction system. On pavement, it felt quick but limited by its tires, while off-road, it excelled on challenging trails, offering a balance between on-road comfort and off-road prowess.

Form and function

2022 Subaru Outback

7/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid provided comfort with an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Rear-seat legroom was decent, with reclining backrests and heated cushions. The dashboard layout was intuitive, with oversized climate control knobs and an easy-to-use infotainment system. Storage was ample, with useful shelves and a roomy 37.5 cubic-foot cargo area, expandable to 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness featured StarTex upholstery, which was water-repellant but uncomfortable in hot weather. The driver's seat had 10-way power adjustment, and the front passenger seat had 8-way adjustment. Rear-seat space was generous, with air conditioning vents and USB ports. The cargo area offered 32.5 cubic feet, expandable to 75.7 cubic feet, with waterproof materials and LED lighting. The roof rack supported a 700-pound static load, ideal for rooftop camping.

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid offered infotainment systems with 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreens, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The test vehicle had an 11-speaker JBL audio system, dynamic navigation, and voice recognition. The 8-inch display was user-friendly, with shortcut buttons and stereo knobs. Camera-based technology included a 360-degree surround-view system and a rearview camera mirror.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness had an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with physical knobs for volume and tuning. Voice recognition required specific prompts, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offered better functionality. The Outback lacked a premium sound system, which was available in other trims. It featured PIN code entry technology, allowing keyless access for active lifestyles.
