2021 Lexus NX Reviews Summary

One year ahead of its redesign, the aged 2021 Lexus NX luxury compact SUV retains the features that have made it so popular: good looks, a high-quality interior, and agile driving dynamics. But not all that glitters is gold, as the NX has some definite problem areas.

2022 GMC Terrain Reviews Summary

“Terrain” is a misnomer as applied to this compact crossover SUV from GMC. The name suggests far more off-roading capability than is available from this restyled Chevy Equinox, and the new AT4 trim level, which equips the 2022 GMC Terrain with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), “sport-terrain” tires, and a steel front skid plate, ought to come with a disclaimer. Based on our testing, the new 2022 Terrain AT4 is all show and no go, as in: “No, you can’t go there in this small SUV.” Not without damaging it, anyway.

Look and feel

2021 Lexus NX

7/10

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

The 2021 Lexus NX carried forward the brand's signature design elements, offering a sharp and sculpted exterior that was reminiscent of its siblings, the smaller UX and larger RX. The NX 300 and 300 F Sport gasoline models were noted for their familiar dimensions akin to the Toyota RAV4, featuring standard power-folding mirrors and 17-inch wheels. The F Sport variant added a sportier flair with a honeycomb grille, triple-beam LED headlights, and 18-inch F Sport wheels. Inside, the F Sport boasted exclusive quilted NuLuxe sport seats and optional Circuit Red interior, maintaining Lexus's reputation for excellent material fit and finish. However, the interior design, particularly the center stack, appeared dated compared to competitors, with limited open storage space.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Terrain received updates to its front styling, wheel designs, and interior trim, with the new AT4 trim level offering a bolder look. The AT4 featured a distinctive grille, black 17-inch alloy wheels, and a steel skid plate for off-road protection. The test model, equipped with Ebony Twilight metallic paint and a black leather interior, was loaded with tech and safety packages, pushing its price to $41,810. Despite its entry-level status, the Terrain's interior materials and execution did not fully meet expectations for its price range. The head-up display and pushbutton transmission controls were noted as less intuitive, and the storage tray was too narrow for a smartphone, highlighting some design oversights.

Performance

2021 Lexus NX

7/10

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

The 2021 Lexus NX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. While not designed for sportiness, it offered a capable performance with a 0-60 mph time of around seven seconds. The six-speed automatic transmission was adequate, though not as smooth as newer multi-speed options. The NX's AWD system could transfer up to 50% of torque to the rear axle, but lacked individual-wheel torque vectoring. Fuel economy was decent, with the FWD model achieving 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The adaptive-suspension system provided a smooth ride, though steering feedback was minimal. The NX offered three drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—affecting throttle response and steering assist. It had a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and a top speed of 124 mph.

The 2022 GMC Terrain, on the other hand, was equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission helped maintain torque delivery, though acceleration was delayed. The Terrain's AWD system included Off-Road mode and Hill Descent Control, but torque steer was an issue in FWD mode. The AT4 trim offered 7.9 inches of ground clearance, less than some competitors. The Terrain's ride was smooth on highways, but off-road performance was limited by its low clearance. Fuel economy was commendable, with an EPA rating of 26 mpg.

Form and function

2021 Lexus NX

7/10

2022 GMC Terrain

9/10

The 2021 Lexus NX featured an upscale interior with comfortable front seats and adequate rear legroom. Heated and ventilated seats were available, and the rear seats offered a 60/40 split-folding option. However, cargo space was limited, with 17.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 54.6 cubic feet with seats folded. A power liftgate with kick sensor was optional.

The 2022 GMC Terrain provided a roomy interior with power-adjustable front seats, heated features, and dual-zone climate control. The AT4 trim included perforated leather upholstery with contrast stitching. The back seat was spacious, with ample legroom and a rear USB port. The Terrain offered numerous storage solutions, though some were poorly designed. Cargo space was generous, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 63.3 cubic feet with seats folded. The front passenger seat could also fold down for longer items.

Technology

2021 Lexus NX

6/10

2022 GMC Terrain

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX came with an 8-inch touchscreen, upgradeable to a 10.3-inch display with the Navigation package. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Lexus Enform services. However, the infotainment system was criticized for its complexity and reliance on a touchpad. Standard features included keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a WiFi hotspot. A Mark Levinson 14-speaker audio system was available on higher trims.

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems, with a 7-inch screen standard on SLE trim and an 8-inch screen on higher trims. Both systems supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Infotainment Package II added connected navigation and a Bose audio system. The voice recognition system was praised for its accuracy. The Terrain also featured a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety

2022 GMC Terrain

7/10

The 2021 Lexus NX was equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, including features like lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. It received top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, with no recalls reported. Lexus offered a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The 2022 GMC Terrain came with the GMC Pro Safety Package, offering forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. The Pro Safety Plus Package added adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. The Terrain received mostly "Good" crash-test scores from the IIHS, though it earned a "Marginal" rating in a new side-impact test. The NHTSA had not evaluated the 2022 Terrain at the time of review.
