2021 INFINITI QX80 Reviews Summary

You might not expect Nissan’s luxury brand to make a hulking land yacht with globetrotting off-road capability, but that’s exactly what you get with the 2021 Infiniti QX80.

The QX80 is one of the last old-school SUVs, boasting body-on-frame construction and an available four-wheel drive (4WD) system with low range. It’s based on the Nissan Armada, which in turn is a rebadged version of the overseas-market Nissan Patrol—a legendary off-roader.

As a full-size luxury SUV based on a model from a mainstream brand, the QX80 follows the same formula as the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX 570, and Lincoln Navigator. In size, price, and prestige, it could also be considered a rival to the Land Rover Range Rover, BMW X7, and Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, but these SUVs have more modern unibody construction.

The QX80 gets some small updates for the 2021 model year, including an improved version of Infiniti’s Smart Rearview Mirror, and a reshuffled trim-level lineup, including base Luxe, midlevel Premium Select, and range-topping Sensory. Our test vehicle was a 4WD Sensory model.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2021 INFINITI QX80

8/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 INFINITI QX80 showcased a blend of Nissan Armada and Infiniti design elements, with its body-on-frame construction reminiscent of the Armada's profile. The SUV's front end, however, was distinctly Infiniti, featuring a grille and headlight design that aligned with the brand's smaller SUVs, giving it a confident yet understated appearance. Standard LED lighting and large wheels added to its assertive look. Inside, the QX80's interior closely mirrored the Armada, with enhancements like wood trim and leather upholstery providing a touch of luxury, though some elements like the foot-operated parking brake felt less premium.

In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover's redesign was more evolutionary, maintaining a similar look to its predecessor with subtle updates like a vertical accent strip under the mirrors. The rear saw the most significant change, with sleek LED taillights integrated into a darker trim. The interior was simplified, featuring a larger touchscreen and fewer buttons, while maintaining a familiar design. High-quality materials and a solid build contributed to a luxurious feel, with the Range Rover offering a more refined interior than many of its competitors.

Performance

2021 INFINITI QX80

8/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 INFINITI QX80 was powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine producing 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. While the engine was responsive, the transmission shifts were less smooth. The QX80's body-on-frame construction provided a comfortable ride, aided by independent suspension and Hydraulic Body Motion Control on Sensory models. However, it felt less composed in corners, with noticeable body roll. The QX80 excelled in towing, with a capacity of 8,500 pounds, but its off-road capabilities were limited by its size and wheel-and-tire combinations.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 395 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 horsepower. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 powertrain provided effortless acceleration, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile for its size, with well-managed body roll and standard rear-wheel steering aiding maneuverability. Its off-road capabilities were enhanced by the Terrain Response system, while maintaining a smooth and quiet ride on-road.

Form and function

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 INFINITI QX80 offered a standard seven-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs, or an optional eight-seat setup. Front seats were adjustable and heated, though lacking in thigh support. Passenger space was competitive, with ample room in all three rows. Cargo space was limited, with 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 95.1 cubic feet with seats folded. The center console provided limited storage, and the front-door cupholders were not well-designed for holding drinks.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned and offered massage functions, while the second row featured power adjustments and climate controls. The optional third row was less spacious, suitable for smaller passengers. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 93 cubic feet with seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension aided in loading cargo.

Technology

The 2021 INFINITI QX80 featured the Infiniti InTouch dual-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 13-speaker Bose audio system. The interface was cluttered, with small screens and confusing controls. Helpful tech included a Smart Rearview Mirror and an Around View Monitor camera system.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover boasted a 13-inch touchscreen with the Pivi Pro system, offering sharp graphics and quick responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a Meridian audio system. The interface required more touchscreen use, but basic climate controls were intuitive. Additional tech included Amazon Alexa integration and remote features.
