2021 BMW X5

9/10

2022 Lexus NX

7/10

The 2021 BMW X5 was a testament to BMW's renowned craftsmanship, fitting seamlessly into the brand's lineup of luxury SUVs. Its design was unmistakably BMW, from the iconic kidney grille to the body shape, ensuring it stood out as a member of the BMW family. However, this familiarity also meant it could blend in with other BMW models in a crowded parking lot. The X5 featured full adaptive LED headlights and a choice of matte aluminum or high-gloss black finishes, depending on the trim. The interior, while consistent with BMW's design language, was criticized for its overuse of black plastic, though it was balanced by leather and soft-touch materials. The M Sport models offered a sportier look with unique styling elements.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus NX presented a fresh redesign with a focus on simplicity and refinement. The NX was unmistakably a Lexus, with its prominent spindle grille and new block lettering on the tailgate. It was larger than its predecessor, offering more space for passengers and cargo. The interior aimed for a minimalist look, moving away from the button-heavy dashboard of the previous model. However, the integration of many functions into the touchscreen could be challenging for drivers to navigate quickly. The NX's interior was comfortable, with options for heated and ventilated seats, and the F Sport trim added sportier elements like bolstered seats and unique instrumentation.

Performance

2021 BMW X5

8/10

2022 Lexus NX

7/10

The 2021 BMW X5 offered a range of powertrain options, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base model, X5 sDrive40i/xDrive40i, featured a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The X5 M50i boasted a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp, while the X5 M delivered up to 617 hp with the Competition Package. The X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid achieved 389 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, offering up to 30 miles of all-electric range. Despite its power, the X5's steering and handling were criticized for not meeting BMW's usual standards, with dynamics likened to a Lincoln. The X5's fuel efficiency varied, with the xDrive45e rated at 50 MPGe when using both electricity and gas.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered two electrified versions: the NX 350h hybrid with 239 hp and 39 mpg combined, and the NX 450h+ PHEV with 302 hp and 36 miles of electric range. The NX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The NX 250 had a 2.5-liter engine with 203 hp. The NX 350 F Sport added driving modes and an adaptive variable sports suspension. The NX's handling was praised, especially in the F Sport trim, though the turbocharged engine was noted to be less refined than German rivals. The NX was not designed for off-road use, with limited ground clearance and approach angles.

Form and function

2021 BMW X5

8/10

2022 Lexus NX

8/10

The 2021 BMW X5 made efficient use of space, with well-placed cupholders and a wireless phone charging pad. The seating was comfortable for short trips, though the front seats could feel hard after extended driving. The rear seats were spacious, and an optional third row was available. The X5's split liftgate and adjustable vehicle height made loading cargo easy. Without the third row, the cargo area was spacious, though the xDrive45e offered slightly less space. The doors did not open very wide, making it challenging to move children and cargo in and out.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered more interior room, though it felt cozy from the driver's seat. The dashboard design created an intimate atmosphere, and the seats were comfortable, especially with heated and ventilated options. The F Sport trim provided better bolstering for spirited driving. Rear-seat passengers enjoyed ample space and amenities like air conditioning vents and USB ports. The NX's cargo space increased by 14%, offering 22.7 cubic feet behind the back seat and 46.9 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Technology

2022 Lexus NX

The 2021 BMW X5 came equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The iDrive system required some acclimation but was user-friendly once familiar. Standard features included a digital gauge cluster, a 10-speaker sound system, and a panoramic moonroof. Optional upgrades included a head-up display, massaging seats, and premium audio systems. However, the wireless Apple CarPlay had connectivity quirks, often taking over music operations unexpectedly.

The 2022 Lexus NX introduced the new Lexus Interface infotainment system, featuring a 9.8-inch or optional 14-inch touchscreen. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Voice Assistant technology, and cloud-based features. A 10-speaker sound system was standard, with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson system available. The new Voice Assistant responded to natural commands, and the NX offered a complimentary three-year trial of Drive Connect services. The digital mirror and head-up display were notable features, though the touchscreen collected fingerprints and lacked a tuning knob.

Safety

2022 Lexus NX

10/10

The 2021 BMW X5 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Driving Assistance Professional Package had issues with lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control, particularly in bright sunlight or rain. The X5 received nearly all Good ratings from the IIHS and a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, despite being subject to seven recalls.

The 2022 Lexus NX featured the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which included advanced driver assistance systems like Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist and Oncoming Vehicle Detection. The Emergency Driving Stop System was tested and proved effective in bringing the NX to a safe stop. Additional safety features included blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Premium trim added rear pedestrian detection and adaptive front lighting. The Vision Package offered a panoramic view monitoring system and lane-change assistance.
