The BMW M5 built its legendary name as an executive sedan that could truly haul when it needed to, and the car has only become more incredible as time has passed. Where early variants were hand-built, sharp-handling cars, the latest M5s are fire-breathing rocket ships with insane acceleration and power. BMW shuffled model offerings and added color choices for the new model year, but buyers can no longer opt for the even more powerful M5 CS.
The M5 comes with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 600 horsepower. The available Competition package adds 17 ponies, and both models come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). While it’s not the most preferred drivetrain setup, BMW programmed enough trickery into the M5’s AWD system to make it enthusiast-friendly: The car can shift 100 percent of its torque to the rear wheels for burnouts and smoky drifts.
As one of BMW’s flagship sedans, the M5 is expected to offer plenty of luxury on top of its performance. The car’s cabin features wildly supportive bucket seats up front and a surprisingly well-padded bench in the back. All seating surfaces are wrapped in upscale leather, and the whole package fits together like a bank vault door. That said, BMW has a habit of piping fake engine sounds through its vehicles’ stereo systems, so M5 drivers may be treated to a bit more synthetic sound than they expect.
BMW offers upgrades for the M5’s interior, such as LED ambient interior lighting, ventilated front seats with massage, quad-zone climate controls, and a heated steering wheel. Though not a huge car, the M5 offers great practicality in its deep, wide trunk, and the rear seats fold flat to open the area for larger items like golf clubs.
Tech is strong, and it includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen running BMW’s iDrive 8 system. The interface offers responsive menus and a simplified design that reduces distraction while driving. Users can interact with the system via touch, voice, gestures, or rotary dial, and there are few tasks that require more than a tap or two to accomplish.
Standard driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warnings, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive cruise control is available.
The 2023 BMW M5 starts at around $110,000. Competitors include the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, Audi RS7, and Porsche Panamera Turbo. The Cadillac is its most direct competition, with a raging supercharged V8 and an available manual transmission. The Caddy is also a sharp handler, reminding many of the prowess BMW demonstrated with early M5 models. Mercedes-AMG also offers the E 53 and E 63 S, but only the E 53 is currently available for sale in the United States.
