Great car, that is fast and has plenty of trunk room.

The car itself is amazing, though the price is too high. The value of the BMW M5 is less than the price this dealership has put it to, the overpricing is a killer of the industry and it is ruining the car community as a whole. You people need to learn to price correctly and give better deals and information.

Is the 2022 BMW M5 a good car?
Generally — you rate it 4/5, and the expert rating is 9.00/10. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Performance.
The 2022 BMW M5 stands out as a luxury performance sedan that feels especially quick and instinctive, and the lineup’s only update is the M5 CS, a carbon-fiber-laden version with track-ready performance as standard. It brings 627 horsepower and a sub-3-second 0-to-60 mph time, which supports the car’s appeal if you want serious pace without giving up the M5’s core identity.
The tradeoffs are familiar at this level: poor fuel economy, no manual transmission, and not much cargo space. Even so, the combination of stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and great handling makes it compelling if you want a high-performance sedan that still feels usable.
Good and great deals account for 26.4% of listings, so there is at least some market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 BMW M5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 BMW M5 is described as a relatively new high-performance sedan with no major reported problem areas in the model’s core setup, but it still deserves careful inspection because performance cars can be sensitive to neglect, abuse, or modification. Its standard twin-turbo V8, eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel-biased all-wheel-drive system point to a sophisticated drivetrain, and the expert summary emphasizes that the M5 CS is built for controlled, highly engaging performance rather than brute-force chaos.
The performance writeup also suggests the car is engineered to feel composed even at very high speed, which is a good sign for durability when the car has been maintained properly. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is the usual one for a high-output luxury performance sedan: repair costs and prior-use history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW M5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a shop that knows performance sedans. Focus on signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence of modifications or deferred maintenance, since this is the kind of car that can be driven very gently or very aggressively.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The standard M5 emphasizes luxury-performance balance, while the M5 CS adds extensive carbon-fiber content, a four-seat layout, M carbon racing seats, and a more focused cabin. The CS is the most stripped-back and track-oriented version, so the base car is the better fit if you want more everyday usability.
- Powertrain: The lineup uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic and rear-wheel-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive. The standard M5 makes 600 horsepower, while the M5 CS raises output to 627 horsepower and cuts weight for quicker acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, city collision mitigation, rear collision preparation, automatic high beams, and speed-limit information. Available upgrades add adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist with collision avoidance, evasion aid, front cross-traffic alert, emergency stop assistant, Extended Traffic Jam Assist, Parking Assistance Plus, active park distance control, drive recorder, and a 360-degree surround-view camera. The M5 CS drops some convenience-oriented safety gear, including adaptive cruise control and the 3D bird’s-eye view camera.
- Infotainment: You get 12.3-inch digital displays, Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7, a head-up display, cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, wireless charging, WiFi hotspot capability, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The M5 is rated at 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 combined mpg. It also carries a gas guzzler tax, which is a useful reminder that running costs are part of the ownership equation.
Which 2022 BMW M5 trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW M5 is offered in 3 trim levels: M5, M5 Competition, M5 CS.
Here's the short version:
- M5: This is the most approachable version if you want the core M5 formula with the standard twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel-biased xDrive, and the full suite of tech and safety features. It gives you the essential performance and luxury balance without the CS’s more extreme focus.
- M5 Competition: This trim adds a bit more output and a sharper tune than the standard M5, making it the best-value choice if you want a stronger performance edge without jumping all the way to the CS. It keeps the M5’s everyday usability while moving closer to the top model’s pace.
- M5 CS: This is the most extreme and most expensive choice, with 627 horsepower, carbon-ceramic brakes, lighter weight, carbon-fiber body and interior details, and a four-seat layout. It suits you best if you want the most focused, track-ready version and are willing to give up some comfort and convenience.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the M5 CS does give up some convenience-oriented driver-assistance equipment compared with the other versions.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW M5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop with patience and be ready to move when the right car appears.
- Deal availability: 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 110 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 84.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $77,068.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW M5 safe?
The 2022 BMW M5 has not been crash tested by NHTSA, and IIHS ratings cited for the related 5 Series are from the 2017 redesign year, which earned Good ratings on all evaluations except LATCH child seat anchors and passenger-side lower foot injuries, where it received Acceptable ratings.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, city collision mitigation, rear collision preparation, automatic high beams, and speed-limit information. Available driver-assistance upgrades add adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist with collision avoidance, evasion aid, front cross-traffic alert, emergency stop assistant, Extended Traffic Jam Assist, Parking Assistance Plus, active park distance control, drive recorder, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.
The M5 CS trims back some of that convenience-focused safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control and the 3D bird’s-eye view camera, which is worth noting if you’re comparing trims.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW M5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 lineup’s standout change is the M5 CS, a carbon-fiber-heavy, track-ready version with 627 horsepower and a sub-3-second sprint to 60 mph.
The bottom line: The 2022 BMW M5 is the right pick if you want the most focused version of this generation’s formula, especially the M5 CS’s added intensity and exclusivity. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may make more sense, but the 2022 still stands out for buyers who want a luxury performance sedan with serious pace and a more special top trim.
