The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid sits in a superclass of ultra fuel-efficient vehicles, along with the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. For 2020, it gets a host of new changes. They start with an all-new front fascia that encompasses new exterior lights, a new grille, a resculpted front bumper, and redesigned side molding. Complimenting the changes are two fresh exterior colors: Stellar Silver and Electric Shadow.
By contrast, the Ioniq Hybrid’s powertrain carries over from the last year. Comprising a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, 32-kilowatt motor, and 1.56-kilowatt-hour battery, it puts out 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends that power to the front wheels. Hyundai provides the Eco-Driving Assist System and Coasting Guide to eke out maximum efficiency. Thus, the Ioniq Hybrid produces the same 57 mpg city, 59 highway, and 58 combined as before, which are among the best in the market.
The Ioniq Hybrid spreads its options across Blue, SE, SEL, and Limited trims. The base Blue trim gets an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 15-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and solar glass. Upper trims include leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, LED headlights, a 10.25-inch infotainment system, navigation, ambient interior lighting, and a Harmon Kardon premium audio system.
For 2020, Hyundai gives the Ioniq Hybrid more standard safety equipment. The Blue trim now includes forward-collision avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, and high-beam assist. Meanwhile, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pedestrian detection appear on higher trims. The Ioniq Hybrid snagged a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 2019.
The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is the same great package as before, with bolder styling and better features.
I have a 30+ mile highway commute to work and am considering getting to an Ioniq plug-in. Is it worth it or should I just get a regular hybrid Ioniq? Which is better for highway driving?
Does the Ioniq have enough power and energy to climb over a long high mountain pass fully loaded? e.g. Sonora pass (highway 120) in California with a max altitude of 9600 ft climbing steadily from a few thousand.
