After a fairly hefty reworking, Hyundai's 2014 Elantra 5-passenger midsize sedan stands poised to recapture a lion's share of the commuter- and family-oriented automobile dollar. After a fairly fast start in 1992 and then a few years toiling in relative ho-hum-ness, this rejuvenated 4-door unveils a new up-powered trim, some added curves and a few upgrades to amenities, just the ticket it needs to rise, like the proverbial cream, to the top of the midsize-market milk pail.
Anyhow, in plain language, the old Elantra GLS base trim has been replaced by the new-for-2014 SE, while a brand-new Sport edition opens in the midlevel trim slot. The upscale Limited, meanwhile, remains the flagship of the fleet. Oh, and prospective tire-kickers looking for any of the 3 trims should be able to test their toes early in 2014.
Power-wise, the SE and Limited ought to once more pack a 145-hp, variable-valve-timed (VVT) 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that’s mated with both the standard 6-speed manual transmission in the SE or the 6-speed shiftable automatic that comes standard in the Limited and undoubtedly remains available to the SE. This 4-banger/6-speed combo puts out 130 lb-ft of torque and sports mileage estimates of 28 mpg city/38 highway. Additionally, each SE and Limited that comes off the line is equipped with Hyundai’s Driver Selectable Steering Mode (DSSM), allowing for mood swings that encompass Normal, Sport or Comfort driving expectations.
The new and nimble 2014 Elantra Sport, meantime, totes a 2.0-liter I4 that’s good for 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque under the management of the standard 6-speed manual transmission or the available 6-speed shiftable automatic. Mileage figures from this bigger powerplant, of course, will drop significantly to an estimated 24/35.
Expected appearance features in the debuting SE should include new-for-2014 15-inch aluminum wheels, as well as the old standby, heated power-adjustable mirrors. Inside, look for cloth upholstery, full power accessories, cruise control, telescoping tilt-wheel steering and air conditioning. A 172-watt audio system, meantime, is claimed (by a number of reviewers) to be tweaked a bit for 2014, though it doubtless remains carrying 6 speakers and satellite radio.
The just-introduced Sport is touted to carry a sport-tuned suspension hauling such delivered equipment as 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded headlights, LED driving lights and taillights, a rear spoiler, a rear-view camera and upgraded interior lighting. Additionally, a 4.3-inch infotainment display debuts in this new arrival to the Elantra lineup.
Reflecting its upper-class upbringing, the flagship Elantra Limited adds in new 17-inch aluminum wheels and introduces standard Blue Link smartphone apps to the already impressive goodie bag. Of course, leather upholstery remains standard, as does a power sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Options are headlined by a brand-new navigation system that’s scheduled for the high-end Limited and flaunts a redesigned 7-inch touchscreen display, a 350-watt audio upgrade and dual-zone automatic climate control. Again, the re-monikered SE is supposedly eligible for much of the standard bling in the Limited, while further noteworthy options in all trims should include remote engine start and upsized alloy wheels.
Notable standard safety equipment for the revamped 2014 Elantra gathering is expected to include, once again, 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front and rear head airbags, active front headrests and front side-mounted airbags. All trims should remain carrying a remote antitheft alarm, while the Limited (and perhaps the Sport) is expected to return with turn-signal-integrated mirrors. Lastly, the new Sport trim is slated to tote standard front fog/driving lights.

I currently own a 2008 and decided to purchase 2014 Hyundai Elantra Limited over the Honda brand which Ive owned for the past 30yrs. The Elantra has been a solid performer and doesnt break the bank to own. As a daily commutator it checked all the boxes, looks good and easy on my pocket. 5 Star for now.Jan 17, 2022

Best car we ever owned. It was dependable, nice riding, comfortable, great on gas, and when we had an accident when we were run off the road by a speeding tractor trailer during a rain storm we went over the bank and flipped on our side sliding down a small hill and our car saved us. I give this car an overall Five star rating. This car is ideal for small families Or a very dependable first car. super affordable for High school and college students. The cars performance is on point. Smooth acceleration no lag on the throttle. Braking is gradual not to sudden or sensitive. On friday I decided, after an exhausting search for a new car for the wifey, on a new 2014 Elantra Sport.
My initial thoughts after the first 50 miles are that this is a car that can stick around in our family for a while. Excellent safety ratings, excellent gas mileage (we sold a Jeep Wrangler for this so ANYTHING is better) and a lot of fun for me to drive (when the misses gives me a chance. :) )
My first impression of this car went straight to the finish and body lines. It's obvious the Elantra is the little brother to the Sonata. The Sport package we selected is the most limited on color ranges so we opted for the Titan Gray with Gray/Black interior. When clean, this color is STUNNING. Very deep, dark color in the shade and when the sun strikes it, the color just pops. The finish work is well executed with no noticable overspray or edge drip to be found. As for the body itself, the lines are agressive and lean. I find the design to be well executed and quite attractive aside form the very front nose where the front licenseplate area seems a bit clumsy. After the lines of the body come the wheels. The stock wheel is above average in looks and the paired with each tim level as appropriate. This car has a lot of upgraded quality for an affordable price. I found the overall hands-on quality to be just as nice and solid as the Sonata (made in Georgia) even though it's final assembly is in Korea.
The looks are that of a lean bicept, and the performance matches that in a powerful quick twitch fashion. Now, this car is no hotrod, but that little 2.0l four can get you going in a hurry. Since the car is still going through it's break-in period, I havent really put it through the gauntlet yet, but after driving it to the store a few times and taking it across town once, its quick for sure. The selectable automatic is great when you want a little more hands on driving and that "pin you to the seat feeling." The standard 6 speed auto is a great 'mate for this motor and the selectable shifting is a wonderful cost free addition. I think Hyundai did a great job with this drivet train and I'm anxiously awating our first road trip in this car.
The interior is one of the major picking points for me in automobiles, and this one asthetically is nice, maybe. Again, comparing to the Sonata, it's very close in design although somewhat lacking in execution. The Sport package comes with bluetooth, rearview camera, satellite radio and a small internal storage headunit. The audio performance in this car is very average, if not poor (to be fair, I only used the bluetooth connection for media playback so far, so that could be the issue) and the satellite radio/media storage system is not very user friendly. The audio system paired easily with my iphone 5 and automatically synced my contacts for reference. The one major issue I have with the interior and cabin of this car seems to be the fact that every surface of this vehicle scratches/get's dirty very easily. We looked through three identical units on the sales floor and every single one of them had issues off the lot. We just picked the cleanest of the three and hoped that we could keep this car looking decent through the weekend. We have already planned to have the headliner cleaned professionally and scotchguarded for the future. Families with small children/dogs beware. I'm already leary of putting our two small dogs in the car. Only time will tell if it's a warranted concern.
Overall, I'm excited about this car and am deeply reminded of our early 2000's Ford Focus we so loved. The build quality is great, the drivability is really great and it's very well equipped for the price. So far, we have no regrets about this purchase and we are looking forward to our future with it.Mar 31, 2014

A.c./air/blower
We have a 2014 Hyundai Elantra. A few months ago the air stopped working all together, no heat no a.c. no defogger etc. Once in a while we would hit a bump or go over a speed bump and it would magically come back on, maybe last a day, 2 days, a week...it would vary, before shutting down again completely. Mechanic friend says relay and all fuses are fine. Last time we got an oil change we asked the shop if they could diagnose. They informed us that we needed a new blower as well as resistor. HOWEVER, whatever taking apart and putting back together they did, somehow made the air come back on and stay on for well over a month/maybe month and a half. Led my husband to believe it can't be those parts that need replacing. Low and behold here we are again and a few days ago it started going out and coming back on throughout the day. I noticed it would shut off when it was hotter outside and turn back on in the evening. It's now been completely off again for a few days. Thoughts?
