A new trim level encompasses the only major change for the iconic BMW 3 Series in 2011. A sportier version of the 335 coupe and convertible has been added to the lineup, to accompany the 328 and traditional 335 trims. The base 328 trim comes with rear- or all-wheel drive and is available as a four-door sedan, two-door convertible or coupe, or a four-door wagon. The 335 drops the wagon configuration, but adds several engine options.
The 328i has a base rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, while those designated ix receive BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. All 328s are powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 230 hp for a spirited if not harrowing ride. Two hundred thirty horses don’t seem like much anymore, but they’re more than enough to scoot the 328 both around town and on the highway, with even passing maneuvers failing to tax the robust six. xDrive offers a slight penalty in overall sprightliness, but with a major gain in stability, especially in the snow.
If the 3.0-liter in the 328 is competent, the turbocharged 300-hp version in the 335 serves to up the ante slightly, enough to make the jaunt to 60 in 4.7 seconds. Turbo lag is evident, but not excessive or aggravating, and the ramp up to peak power is exhilarating. 335is coupes and convertibles get an even more potent 320-hp version of the turbocharged inline 3.0-liter six, which feels much faster than the extra 20 horses would suggest. Perhaps that’s because it also gets an extra 32 lb-ft of torque for a total of 332, as well as an overboost mode that will ramp the pressure in the turbines up to 14.5 psi for up to 7 seconds, delivering 370 lb-ft at will.
For years in the States we’ve been complaining about all those high-performance special-edition 3 Series that appear in Europe but never seem to hop the pond. It’d be easy to think that the Germans decided to quiet our near-constant complaints by simply upping the boost in the 335i from 8.7 to 11.6, slapping an “s” on the end of the trim designation, and retiring to the nearest watering hole for brats and beers. But this simply isn’t the case, lucky for us. The 335is gets a higher-capacity cooling fan and a redesigned lower fascia with bigger openings to cool the secondary radiator and oil cooler tucked behind its left and right sides. It also gets stiffer engine mounts to handle the increased torque and is the first non-M BMW to get not only the six-speed manual, but the seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, arguably the best offered in the lineup. The 335is also gets an M suspension good for a slight (10mm) drop, along with stiffer springs and shocks. From the outside, you’ll notice gray 18-inch alloys, unique black trim and badges, as well as black chrome exhaust tips. The price comes within a couple thousand of the M3's, but it offers a distinct driving experience, so you’ll have to drive both and decide for yourself. It’s the torque that really makes the difference, with even its baseline rating of 332 besting the M3’s 295 by a surprising amount, especially when considering the 335's peak torque arrives at 1,200 rpm, as opposed to 3,900 for the M3. Horsepower is a similar story, and while the M3 puts up an impressive 414 from its 4.0-liter V8, it won’t show up until a screaming 8,300 rpm, while the 335’s inline six delivers at a more accessible 5,800. Personally, I’ll take the more streetable 335.
For a truly insane amount of torque, enough to tear the asphalt right out from underneath you, look to the 335d, powered by a turbodiesel 3.0-liter inline six offering 425 lb-ft of torque at an immediately apparent 1,750 rpm. Two hundred sixty-five horses show up at 4,200 rpm, making sure your arms will stay straight all the way to redline.
It’s nice to see BMW treating us Americans as something more than a cash cow to fund their own European adventures by way of special editions and high-performance models. After all, we like to go fast, too. Hopefully, the 335is won’t be a short-lived experiment and will lead to more exotic importations, but that’ll depend largely on whether we can fend off our instinctive M fever.

The 09-11 335d with M57 engine is an absolute rocket ship, acceleration is like being fired out of a cannon. Paired with the sport package it becomes a jet fighter, superb handling. This car was in superb shape, low miles, always owned in the Southwest (no salt), and every option available except maybe the rear sun shades, which are rare. My 440 mile trip home at 75-80 with A/C took 12.2 gal and resulted in 35.7mpg, its currently getting ~24 on my city commute.Apr 08, 2024

The vehicle is loaded with every available option for the year and model other than navigation. The 2011 BMW e90 is the last of the old school BMWs. The steering offers precise and heavy, driver to road feedback which the newer F80 models are sorely lacking. Jul 09, 2021

I've owned a few 3-series BMW's. This is the 3rd. My favorite was an E36 1999 325is. It was a manual transmission and was a blast to drive. I then had the E46, a 2001 325i coupe. It was also a great car, an automatic and not nearly as fun as the e36. My 2011, is a sedan. it is a 2011 328i (E90). While it is a great car, it doesn't feel as "connected" as my other two did. I've had great ownership experiance with BMW and will probably upgrade to the new F30 in the near future.Sep 02, 2014

The car drives great. Feels like it should be on a track with lots of curves. The M package on it gives it a lot of attention. I have owned four BMW’s over the years, and this is the absolute best example of the brand. This car is a gas to drive: perfectly behaved, and really fun, all at the same time. It is very reliable, and it demonstrates a balance not found in many 4 door sedans. Powerful and fun when you want it, buttoned up and well-behaved when you need it. Stereo is great - no need to spring for the Logic 7.

This is a great car for anyone looking for a 3 series BMW. The extra 25HP really does make a difference from the plain 335. It is an athletic vehicle and looks great. This is the closest car to an M3 that an individual can own, while not having to spend over $50,000. All around this is a great car to own. Aug 22, 2013

Appearance: Loved the look of the face lifted E90. It was very comfortable.
Build quality: No noises or blind spots. Only scheduled maintenance at no cost. Milage acceptable for everyday driving.
Performance: Perfect brakes and perfect handling. Acceleration acceptable. 200hp with 200torques is on the low side for a car this size/weight, but overall a huge difference to my 2005 Toyota Echo. Always felt extremely safe and in complete control driving it. This car was a lot of fun to drive.Mar 19, 2013

I love everything about my car. It's got all the right bells and whistles and it drives perfect. I test drove a lot of cars and nothing performed like the 3 series. The car isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. Anyone who says they rather have something else is only saying that based on PRICE. The cheapest product isn't always the best. When the transmission is set to "sport" mode the car runs aggressively...very
nice throttle tip in and shift points. During deceleration the car does not
freewheel but acts much more like a manual driven correctly, down shifting as
the car slows to a stop so that it is always poised to accelerate. With the
"normal" gear selection the transmission up shifts just a little too quickly,
although the torque curve of the 3.0 is flat enough not to bog the car down.
I like the space gray color as it is close to the sterling gray on the 2011 Mustang
GT which I really wanted but the lease deals were no where near compatible to
BMW's offerings. I am very happy with the standard features of the car and
the only two items I am not happy with are the run-flat tires, however I was
lucky to have the Contis vs. the Bridgestones. I want my Extreme Contact DWS
from my previous BMW and I will take a chance on a flat. At least give us a
choice BMW!
I have driven the car a whopping 400+ miles in the first month so I will save

Great fun to drive. A little short on space in the rear seat compared to the comparable Audis and the suspension is a little too hard for the very rough Indian roads (combined low profile runflats). But still brings a smile to your face everytime you push it hard.Feb 19, 2011

Oil sensor light never came on
I had my oil changed about 900 miles ago. I have been doing very little driving due to Covid. Yesterday my car started “sputtering” and after a minute of clanking it died. I had it towed to my BMW dealership where I got the bad. Catastrophic engine failure because there was no oil. What I want to know is, why did no oil light come on? Next question...I can’t afford to rebuild the engine, so what can I do with it? The rack alone on top of the car was nearly $1,000. Is there an online market for BMWs in this condition?
