The 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 sees virtually no changes from 2008. This heavy hauler still offers four trim levels: ST, SXT, SLT, and Laramie (five if you count the Powerwagon, which is available only in the 140.5-inch wheelbase, Quad Cab configuration). Payload and trailer towing capacities are rated at 9,000 pounds and 15,650 pounds respectively, and buyers can choose a 6 1/3-foot or 8-foot bed. The Ram 2500 is also offered in 140.5-inch or 160.5-inch wheelbases; Regular, Quad, or Mega Cab configurations; and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.
All Ram 2500 trims for '09 feature a standard 345-hp, 5.7-liter V8 Hemi with Dodge's multi-displacement system, which shuts four cylinders down at highway speeds to save fuel. This powerplant can be replaced with an available 6.7-liter, inline-six turbodiesel that churns out 350 hp and a load-moving 650 lb-ft of torque. The Ram 2500 features a standard five-speed automatic with overdrive, an optional six-speed automatic, or a six-speed manual transmission with an ultra-low first gear for potent trailer-towing capability.
The base Ram 2500 ST arrives with such standard handling, comfort, and convenience features as the Sentry Key theft-deterrent system, air-conditioning, 17-inch steel wheels, a CD player with four speakers, double-wishbone front suspension and Hotchkiss solid-axle, leaf-spring rear. Options for the Ram 2500 ST include the 6.7-liter turbodiesel, six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, a sliding rear window, the uConnect hands-free phone system, Sirius satellite radio, power accessories, supplemental side airbags, an anti-spin rear axle, and a rear window defroster.
The Ram 2500 SXT trims feature cruise control, power windows, locks, and mirrors, heated exterior mirrors, and stain- and odor-resistant fabrics as standard equipment, while the 2500 SLT for '09 also features forged aluminum wheels, a sliding rear window, and Sirius Satellite radio.
Standard features for the Ram 2500 Laramie include power six-way driver and front passenger seats, power adjustable pedals, a power sliding rear window, seven Infinity speakers, flat-folding load floor storage, dual-zone climate control, and wood-grain bezels. The Powerwagon, designed for off-roading, is delivered with a standard front electric winch, Class IV trailer hitch, Tru-Lok front and rear locking axles, and skid plates.
Options offered on the higher-end Ram 2500 trims for 2009 include rear-seat DVD, a power sunroof, leather upholstery, bucket seats, and a GPS navigation system.
Safety features on all ’09 Ram 2500s include standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, next-generation, multi-stage front and side airbags, and side impact door beams. No crash test data is available for the Dodge Ram 2500 lineup.
