Dispensing with the use of catchy, flashy nicknames, Mazda tells it like it is with the 2008 MAZDASPEED3. This front-wheel drive hatchback is about the fastest car in its compact class, delivering more horsepower at a cheaper price than the comparable WRX from Subaru. Introduced last year, there are no major changes for 2008.
With a lower sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, 18-inch wheels, performance tires, and a turbocharged version of the 2.3-liter inline-four engine, the 2008 MAZDASPEED3 hits 263 hp and makes 0-60 in under six seconds. Torque is rated at 280 ft-lbs at 3,000 rpm. This hatchback loves the open highway, with confident acceleration and good road grip around curves, although there is noticeable torque steer in the latter situation. The sporty theme is carried through the side sills, rear spoiler, and large chrome tailpipe. The interior continues the theme with black dash covers, black seats with red stitching, and sport seats with leather bolsters. The 2008 MAZDASPEED3 comes in Sport and Grand Touring trims, both with dual front and side curtain airbags, ABS brakes, traction and stability control, and the full array of power features. The Grand Touring adds a 6-CD player and leather seats, along with rain-sensing wipers and xenon headlights.
Based on the regular MAZDA3 hatchback, the MAZDASPEED3 seats four, with split-folding rear seats opening onto a cargo area that expands from 16 to 43 cubic feet. Passengers say the back seat is very cramped, however, and the roomiest feature seems to be the glove box. Though complaints mention a noisy and harsh ride and the lack of all-wheel drive (lending to the torque steer problem), most drivers rave about the power and performance, saying it's easy to forget how fast this car moves (watch out for tickets!). Handling and a tight turning ratio add to the driving excitement.

Car was ABSOLUTELY NOT WHAT I EXPECTED. The car has an axle that’s can come off any minute which had some type of belt wrapped around the axle, the two front tires are 18s and the rear tires are 16s, the tires are more than 10 years old, the ac only blows hot air because the condenser is hanging by zip ties only. I would NOT recommend this car nor the dealership to anybody Oct 02, 2021

I loved this car. It was fast without being obtrusive or loud. Interior was nice, seats wer firm and comfortable. 6 speed manual gearbox and clutch had a great feel. Engine and transmission as tight as the day I bought it. Handled great and served me very well for the past 5+ years. I would have kept it indefinitely if my family was not expanding.Feb 27, 2015

I loved this car for the 77,000 miles that I owned it. I installed a Cobb Accessport and Cobb Downpipe, along with their intake and a front mount intercooler and the car made around 290 wheel horsepower and 330 torque on a conservative dyno. I also averaged about 28 mpg per tank on my commute, I could get 30+ if it was all highway.
It was lots of fun, decent space inside, and I would buy another.... Currently waiting to see what "Mazdaspeed" comes out next for 2015+, along with the Subaru STi, & Mitsubishi EVO.Dec 10, 2013

I liked the style and performance from it being stock. Makes power really easy, and turns heads everywhere I go from the sound of the exhaust to the sound of the turbo. Shifts really smooth and needs nothing. I like this carOct 15, 2013

Performance: 4 cylinder turbo is all I have to say, with tuning capabilities. The
Japanese just left it wide open for you to mess with it
Build Quality: Pretty good for a sports car under 20K price range.
Appearance: Stock, meh... looks sharp to me.
Cost of ownership: Minimal maintenance so far, just 1 major engine recall/TSB
that Mazda took care of under power train warranty (70k miles).
Fun factor: Holy S#!t.... Never owned/driven a turbo'ed car and damn is the
thing fun, especially when you start modifying it.Apr 21, 2012

All and all i love this car, it has been the best car i've had so far. It's a lot of fun and gets a lot of attention. The turbo in it just makes the car so much more fun, but the top mount intercooler was a sorry thing to put on it. But definitely worth the buy!Mar 29, 2012

Love, love this car. Just what I wanted, light, quick, stable, not too gaudy, stealthy. Good looking too. I don't race, but just love to get to the slot that has just appeared ...first! Women really like it. They think it is an economy car! ;-)Dec 04, 2010

Very subtle looking vehicle, not at all attention grabbing. Most people mistake it for base model Mazda3. However this is a much different car.
Performance: Off the lot it's a very fast and quick car for a hot hatch. Simple bolt-on modifications make this thing an absolute beast.
It's biggest limitation is that it's a FWD car and with that much torque it has a pretty strong Torque Steer.
Build Quality: I have blown a turbo and it was replaced under warranty, this car should be running a thicker than recommended synthetic oil since it uses Direct Injection, the oil tends to get polluted with fuel. I would recommend getting an Oil Catch Can for this vehicle.
Appearance: This car is subtle looking and not at all a heat score, however it's subtle differences from the base model make it stand out.
18" wheels, bigger rear wing and pronounced hood.
Interior is a heavy rubberized plastic which does not feel or look cheap (however isn't Audi luxurious), leather steering wheel and all buttons are well laid out and smooth, as well it has buttons instead of toggle switches (which has been the latest trend). Lots of small race like interiors like bucket seats, and Mazdaspeed logos remind you that you bought the good one.
That aside, I would have preferred a sunroof and maybe heated leather seats in the Canadian model (you would think heated seats would be a necessity for Canadian models).
Cost of Ownership: Moderately priced care when compared to it's closest competitors. Maintenance costs are a little higher as I think the best synthetic oil is needed. As well this car requires Premium 91+ octane gasoline. It also runs better on Ethanol Free gas. That aside I call it my "smile tax".
Fun Factor: This car never ceases to put a smile on my face. It has been everything I ever wanted out of this car.

Good on gas, cost 10k less than most of its competition, interior doesn't feel like a rental car, u can actually feel comfortable about driving it more than 2 hours away. Even though it makes 300whp, its still practical and a very good drive.Nov 16, 2009

2.3 liter with turbo putting out 263 HP. Handles great. Sits on the road like glued. It has some minor rattles but it's nothing serious. Car looks great and it's a sleeper. According to EPA it has 18 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. I had 29 MPG on highway and I'm averaging 22 MPG in city. This car is fun to drive and I would recommend it.Oct 07, 2009

Great car, and isn't too common on the roads. Front wheel
drive isn't as desirable as all wheel drive, but the 264
Horse power with little torque steer is great and makes up
for it.
Stopping power is top rated and the car keeps up or beats
cars with sticker prices 8 to 12 thousand more. Best bang
for the buck.Jul 19, 2009

I love everything about it. It is fast but subtle and has
a great exhaust note. The gas milege is not great but i
love driving it. The appearance is nicer than the
regular 3. Much sportier overall. I love it Jun 24, 2009

The Mazdaspeed 3 is simply a blast to drive. The turbo provides a very high amount of torque available just a little bit up in the registry. Fantastic performance overall and great build quality. Everything feels very solid and I think this car will run for many miles. For what you pay it's nothing short of a steal considering what options come in the GT package.Jun 02, 2009

Best Bang for the Buck. First in class overall in
performance. Acceleration, braking , handling make
this a fun car. It is also a practical car with the
hatchback design. Ride is firm but not uncomfortable,
MPG is good for performance car (18 to 31MPG)
depending on how heavy you foot is. No problems in
over a year. Needed more room so no longer own. Two years and no
problems with the Speed3. Great car.Apr 30, 2009

All the fun of a Mazda 3 with a bonus 100 HP. Even better handling and feel than a regular 3. And it doesn't scream racer. One badge on the back is all that tells the tale. And it hauls my two kids and a stroller no problem. 5.5 0-60 grocery getter. Oh yea, and because of the Carpocolypse, I paid 20k for it. New. Just ridiculous. Apr 01, 2009

Would kick the crap out of my '03 Mustang GT if I still had it, and can haul me, my wife, our 2 dogs and luggage. Has 263hp, leather seats, xenon headlights, rain sensing wipers and a 6 speed stick. Plus it averages about 35mpg on the highway.Feb 05, 2009

Absolutely love this car. Car and Driver Magazine
named it number one best performance for the price
in a comparison test. Looks great, really quick thanks
to the turbo. Clutch is a little rough, but it not too
soft. Since it's a front wheel drive car that has a lot of
horse power (263 hp), there is torque steer in the
lower gears. A real fun car to drive everyday, and can
be made into a fun little pocket rocket.Dec 10, 2008

Amazing car, looks good inside and out. Wish the motor wasn't glass because it is able to put down big numbers. For a front drive this car handles very well. I've enjoyed it and love the looks. Better then anything else comparable in the market. For the money it simply just can't be beat.Dec 05, 2008

pos - best sport compact two years running! wrx and evo jr cant touch this! stock 263hp 280 lb-ft tq and handling like a mofo! tighter than the STi in my opinion and smoother too. this car is a sleeper cuz you just got beat by a wagon! yeah sport bus!!
neg - wheel hop = bad 60fts but quickly cured by the stiffer motor mountAug 18, 2008

Handles good for FWD, slower than the Z in the corners, but picks up quick.
Stock options are ok, but needs some aftermarket items to really uncork the stock turbo.
Cold air intake and FMIC are a must. Cobb Tuning Access Port is another must have.
Best overall FWD fun to drive hatch around.Aug 07, 2008

This car has great handling and power. The turbo has almost no noticeable lag and gives solid power throw the power curve. It also has a nice interior. Lots of room for 4 adults. The bucket seats are very comfortable and hold you in under hard cornering. also the close ratio 6 speed transmission is very quick and solid go for fast pulls or spirited canyon driving. I believe that it is the best car that you can get at its
price. It may not be the best car in the luxury
department, but it makes up for in speed and
handling. It is a very fun car to drive and hits 125
mph in 5th gear.Jul 23, 2008

Well, hard to imagine, but I chose the Speed3 over the Mk5 GTI. Yes, it was a close call... Call it silly, but one of the tipping points for me is that the Speed3 is a good looking, but subtly styled car. The GTI blasts you with its Speed Boy front end styling. No thanks. The Speed3 is, as you must know, fast. Almost too fast, if there is such a thing. The shifter is a tad notchy, so you will need practice, but once you master it, you'll appreciate the well bolstered seats because you will be pushed back into them on take off. Zoom Zoom! It really is amazing how Mazda minimized the torque steer. Its so minimal in first and second, I wish they did not tame it so much (aftermarket calling...). Lets not be OCD about this. This is a fun, little car that you can still drive daily. You can get almost four Speed3s for the cost of a nicely equipped Audi RS4. So, high end leather, radio, and sound dampening, you don't get. Then again, you may still be able to afford to drive the Speed3 and keep your house. The interior of the Speed is nice, not great but good for the range. A bit too much plastic on the dash, but I can live with it. Its that much fun. Sure, watch out for tire spin, its true. But really, unless you are sticking the throttle through the floor at every stop light, you will be fine.
What Mazda needs to do is offer more factory options (GTI anyone?). You are right if you think 18" rims on a car this size is overkill. I seriously doubt you will lose any performance on 17" with higher profile tires. You might want to look into this if you live in snow belts or with many potholes. Yes the exhaust drones, but its not overwhelming . My advice is to spring for the Grand Touring version. The leather seats, climate control, and better audio are worth it and will help resale value, if you care. The WRX just got tamed this year, the EVO X is frankly overpriced and thirsty, the GTI? Nice, but is dressed like a teenager. Plan ahead though... the Speed3 is a limited build car so you may have to wait a few months to get your hands on this pocket rocket of a hot hatch. Living and driving in Colorado with some of the country's most respected twisties, is where this car feels at home. Take a recomended 30 near twice the speed and feel the sure footed P215/45's practically rip the asphalt off. No tire scrub, just a thrill seekers dream of apex glory. This car handles at a rate far higher than most have in the way of God given skill. A closed course track is where all of the potential of this car should be unleashed. The 2.3L direct injected inline four with an astonishing 15.3 lbs. of turbo boost quickly throws the car in to the 3500 RPM powerband marker despite the tourqe management system, and keeps you grinning all the way up to six grand. The great part is... You've got five more gears, and a hell of a lot of speedo left before the electronic governor kicks in and spoils the fun. Leather bolstered seats lock you in during the spirited, potentially licence revoking blast through the twisties, but are also surprisingly comfortable over a long period of time. The interior features are both ergonomic and stylish. Road noise is apearant, but with the suspension and tires this car sports, the noise is surprisingly minimal. The Bose sound system is impressive for a stocker, and the storage space is more than adequite. I am 6' 3" tall and have two car seats in the back of mine, prooving that there is actually some decent leg room in both the front and rear seats. I could go on and on about this little "hot-hatch". Over all, I'd say the difficult line of practical daily usability mixed with performance was masterfully conquored by the folks at Mazda with their "wild child" known as the Speed3Mar 18, 2008

After I test drove this car, I couldn't stop thinking about it. It has so much power- 263 hp and 260 lbft of torque... it's truly a beast. I read in several car magazines that torque-steer is an issue because of all of that torque going to the front wheels, but it's really not that bad if you are used to driving front drive cars. It's also a practical car because of all of the space, and once you put it into 6th on the highway it just becomes a cruiser and quiet. It's good stuffDec 21, 2007
Happened 2008 Mazdaspeed3 that I'm replacing the oil pan on and when I took the pan off I found a like set pin type thing in the bottom of the pan and I don't know where it goes or what it's for it fits in the back of one of the round things on the pump I think it is
When my cars rpm rising pass 3500 the battery light comes on. My tool scannner show the battery bolt and when the light pops up it shows 11.2 But at stop it goes back up to 14.2
After doing oil change. My oil still kinda dirty after a couple of days driving. Should I buy cheap Synthetic oil and keep drain and fill until it clear.
Hi I have 2008 mazdaspeed 3. I think I might have bad piston rings. Having someone do leak down test. If I do how much money would it cost to replace them
Hello, I had brought my 150k mile car in for service, they recommended that i replace my timing chain, water pump, vvt, main seal gasket(etc), entire oil pan, and oil pan gasket along with adding new oil and filter(of course). I drove less 2000 miles and my engine blew. There was no oil on my dipstick and when i checked under the car there was oil leaking EVERY WHERE! This is obviously related to the dealership's repairs. Does this mean they have to replace my motor?
