Write a reviewSurrounded by rumors of its imminent demise, the Toyota Matrix rolls into the 2008 model year as a value-priced five-door vehicle with characteristics of a small SUV. Built on the same platform as the Corolla and offering plenty of cargo space and a wide variety of seat configurations, the Matrix fits in well as a small family vehicle, a weekend workhorse, or economical around-town transportation for drivers on the go.
The Matrix displays a sporty design, with a slanted nose, a swept-back roofline, and stylish sheetmetal overall. Aerodynamic halogen headlights and sporty 16-inch wheels add to the Matrix's stylish exterior look.
Under the Matrix's hood, a 126-horsepower, 1.8-liter, double-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine provides adequate but not overwhelming power. The engine links to a standard five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic.
The Matrix comes in both Base and better-equipped XR versions. Standard features for the Base model include four-way adjustable front seats, a fold-flat passenger seat, two 12-volt power outlets, a heavy-duty rear window defogger, a tire-pressure monitoring system, and a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system with a CD player.
The XR adds such features as remote keyless entry, an illuminated entry system, and power windows. Options include power door locks and an upgraded JBL sound system, as well as various features that are part of add-on packages.
According to some reports, following the 2008 model year the Matrix will give way to the new Toyota Blade, which will provide many of the Matrix's current features in an updated design.

Great overall car. Toyota should start making these again. Reliable and very roomy. Very sporty and not an eyesore to look at. Great on mpg. Cons are few . No ABS . No bluetooth and hp is only around 130. (still zippy though). May 01, 2021

I could not compare the Toyota Matrix 2008 to any other car
because of my personal experience with the matrix. The reliability of my last 05 Matrix was beyond any car I have ever owned, in my 60 year driving many makes and models.
The Matrix is a fantastic car in every aspect of a number one vehicle.

I enjoy my Matrix. This is my first car. I am upset that they have decided to discontinue the model. I believe they are making a mistake unless they replace it with something similar. We will see what they unveil.Apr 07, 2014

Drove this car on a daily basis for close to 5 years. It was a wonderful handling car with plenty of room for the family but enough pep to keep me happy. Fuel mileage was about 29MPG overall, which was more than enough for me.Nov 25, 2013

Performance: Slick handling only in good weather. Tires act like pontoons in rain. Acceleration leaves something to be desired. Braking is good.
Build Quality: Have not needed any repairs (except for routine maintenence). However, after having the vehicle, it has already begun to develop a squeaking noise when it idles (eg at traffic lights, in parking lots, etc.).
Appearance: It's pretty sharp both interior and exterior, but there is one factor about the inside that I dislike...The speakers are on the floor! It makes the sound quality appear warped.
Cost of Ownership: Decent on gas, but it doesn't get the mileage it should (Gauged at 42 MPG, only gets about 35 MPG). It does require an oil change and tire rotation every 6 months.
Fun Factor: Yeah, it's a decent car to get around in, although I wouldn't call it "fun" to drive.Jul 04, 2010

I love it, it gets great gas mileage 31 miles to the gallon, it has alot of room....and it handles great sticks to the road...the performance is awesome the brakes work like magic and im just glad i have it....I think i deserve it.May 14, 2008

My dad traded his Ford truck for this since gas keeps getting higher (ugh), I like it, my mom
and i took it to G.R. and it handled the freeways and the city just fine. Overall it feels like a

Power is there but you have to spend a lot of time on the skinny pedal but what else would you expect from a 1.8L making 130 hp? I usually spend a lot of time in the driver's seat but I got to sit in the back row when my friend drove and wow, its really big and comfortable even with the front seats reclined. The sound system is great, I have the 5 disc with 6 speaker combination and the sound is crisp, although it could use a subwoofer. The height of the car is great for a great driving view, I can see everything on the road. At highway speeds, the car is a little noisy but I can blame that on the optional moonroof that I have, maybe a Wind reflector might come in handy in the future. The luggage area can hold a lot of bags as I've made a lot of visits to the airport to pick up friends. Gas mileage is iffy but I have a heavy right foot and I'm trying to fix that. Jan 27, 2008

Car wont start. Battery new. Not even dash lights or headlights or heater fan.. Only check engine lights
Manual transmission. History: For awhile it would do this occasionally but if id pump the clutch (maybe affecting the safety lock out? ) it would then start fine. Now theres almost nothing. Even while boosting. Turn the key to acc position and nothing but a check engine and oil light and security light. No other dash lights. No headlights. Dead.
