Small this car may be, but consider the sum of its parts. Standard equipment is highlighted by a long list of top safety features, including a full slate of driver and passenger air bags, Volvo's patented whiplash protection system (WHIPS), Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), and an energy-absorbing interior with a tough passenger safety cage. The car's roster of lighting contributes to safety with its daytime running lights illuminated side-marker lights/turn signal indicators, and an innovative rear fog light that helps to increase visibility to drivers approaching from behind. Speaking of innovation, get a load of the Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS), which monitors driver activity (steering wheel angles, turn-signal frequency, rate of acceleration) to determine the driver's stress level. This little magician then reduces the amount of information displayed so as not to compromise the driver's attention. You'll also get with every trim cruise control, a pollen filter, plush floor mats, and a single CD player with audio controls into the leather steering wheel. Heated side-view mirrors are also standard, and they work with the rear defroster on a timer system: the mirrors turn off after 6 minutes, the rear window after 12. If all this isn't enough, several options packages let you add such niceties as heated leather seats, a 6-CD in-dash changer, and the Volvo Navigation System. This stylish little commuter car handles fine, but you'll be disappointed if a sports-car suspension is among your expectations. Notice that we called it a commuter car and not a family car - that backseat doesn't exactly give the kids room to grow. If you like your young'uns, and we know that you do, you might want to look a bit higher up the Volvo ladder. It's still early for this model year, but reliability ratings from users and professional reviewers are about average. Then again, with so many features, there's more that can potentially go awry.

This car feels so solid, comfortable and safe. it has very good handling and braking. The interior makes other cars look and feel so cheap in comparison. The car also can hold lots of stuff in its trunk and the back seats makes carrying passengers a pleasant experience unlike other small cars. Jan 05, 2015

beatiful style and fancy interior, but lack of storage space in the cabin and boot is just average....electronics sometimes show strage alarms, but till now the main CPU has cleared it all.....probably some bad contact somewhere.....powerful enough, but if the foot is a bit heavier......economy goes down.....if you use official garage it is very very expensive to maintain....however....i do not regret....safety feeling is good side of the carDec 17, 2011

I am the second owner of this S40 and I am in love. It's peppy, handles great, and has all sorts of options. Good sound system and it is just a pleasure to drive. You absolutely feel safe and in control of this zippy little sedan. The "W" button improves traction/handling in bad/wet weather. I would not recommend as a family car. Although safe, there is not a lot of available cargo space and the back seats are small.Aug 13, 2011

Cute, sporty, reliable. It can get of a light in a respectable amount of time and doesn't look too shabby in the parking lot. It's an interim car for me but has been taken to task by the lake effect snowstorms. So far no true white knuckle rides due to the car ... :) Mar 08, 2009

i don't like the manual short shift gearbox because the is accelerating fast but the top speed is low and what is also bad is that i can't install any sub woofer or i pod connection

Solid feel on the road, just a bit too much front tyre noise, the MY08 model seems to have fixed that though. Seats are amazing and the leather smell is great. Easy to use dash board and stearing wheel controls are easy to operate. Love the flooting console with the oak trim. Have a very narrow boot though.Sep 19, 2008

2007 Volvo S40 T5
Reader shows pending misfire on all cylinders.p0300-thru p0305. starts and idles smooth. rev up to 2500 and starts to miss. then misses at idle as well. Shut off and restart the car and the miss is gone til revved up past 2500. Changed all spark plugs with two different brands of irridiums, Unplugged coils one at a time and #2 is the miss. swapped coils and it stays at #2. Unplug injectos and miss shows up at # 2. Again shut off and restart and miss is gone til 2500. Cleaned coil grounds. Engine light flashes on and off only after miss starts. Any ideas where to go next?

Volvo S40 Service Engine Urgent Message
I have a 2007 Volvo S40. It has had a catalytic converter engine code for some time. Haven't gotten around to replacing it. Today I pulled out quickly to get in front of another car and the tires squealed and slipped a little. Immediately, a red triangle appeared with the message that the engine needed to be serviced urgently. I pulled into a shop and they only thing that they could find was the same catalytic converter code that was already there. Nothing new. I drove the car again and two minutes later the message came back up and was still there when I pulled into my driveway. Any ideas as to the cause / severity and why it happened the moment I accelerated quickly? Thanks.
