This was the last model year for the Sable. The name, however, returns in the 2008 model year for a different Mercury. Before its last year, the Japanese competition had already out classed the Sable.
Mercuryâ??s entry into the mid-size car field was physically larger than its competition. The GS trim line has a standard front bench seat to accommodate six passengers; though the middle front bench doesnâ??t encourage long occupancy. Front bucket seats are standard on the LS trim line and optional on the GS line.
A 3.0-liter V6 powers both trim lines: the GS gets the 153-hp configuration and the LS a 201-hp version. The later variant powers the Sable to an 8.2-second 0-60 time. Both engines couple to a four-speed automatic transmission. The 201-hp engine averaged 18.4-21 mpg on regular gas; reviewers didnâ??t expect the 153-hp GS model to do much better. However, one owner claims between 27-29 mpg averages.
Standard safety equipment on the GS model includes dual front airbags and an emergency inside trunk release. ABS brakes are available on the LS model, optional on the GS model. Front side-impact airbags are optional.
The interior is comfortable and spacious for five passengers, with trunk space generous at 16 cubic feet with 60/40 split rear seatback folds. Reviewers found the interior styling attractive, but not high-class. Engine and road noise levels are low.
The Sable handles well with little body lean in turns and tracks well on the highway. There was criticism of the steering as heavy and numb and of mushy brakes.
The Sable, like its Ford Taurus cousin, delivers acceptable road manners and passenger comfort at a competitive price. However, its ride and build quality fall short of its Honda Accord and Toyota Camry midsize rivals.

It’s a great car with many features and great value I won’t compare it with any models because this vehicle is a one of a kind model and if it’s a luxury vehicle you are looking for that drives great and is comfortable the Mercury Sable is a vehicle for you!Jul 24, 2021

Nice family car and comforting for use with young family members. I had good luck with my previously I owned a Ford Taurus (1997) and passed it on to my daughter in 2005 who drove it about 2 years, then to my niece for another 6 years . So basically I have been happy with both my 2005 Sable and 1997 Taurus (very similar cars).Sep 22, 2012

car is an average car with 77000 miles one it. The ford delaership supposifly put on new tires ut they were underinflated and almost caused and accident. Build qualitty is lacking and the engine is under powered and sucks gas like mad.....Aug 14, 2012

In the year that I've had this car, I 've only had to maintain oil changes and tires. It wasn't my first choice because to me it looks like an "old persons" car, but once I drove it and noted the acceleration and easy handling and all the amenities (its fully loaded), I changed my mind and decided that I could drive this car for now. I wish it was a smaller car. It was stated as being a mid-size sedan in the same class as Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion, but this car is sizeably larger than it's companions of the same year (2005). It feels and drives like a family car. I've driven Lincoln Town Cars and this ride and comfort reminds me of the Lincoln. Sep 22, 2011

Good reliable car. 100k miles and still runs great. Leather seats, power everything, CD player, very comfortable. Good looking. Roomy, seats 5 easily, huge trunk. Anti-lock brakes and airbags.
A little sluggish in accelerating. Not really 'sporty.' It's a family car. Gas mileage is average at best, 25 highway, 17 city.

This is the vehicle I always hoped to avoid in the Avis car rental fleets. The ride, and driving comfort of this vehicle were atrocious. And this vehicle drinks a lot of fuel, given that its V6 engine only produces barely over 150 horsepower. I don't know what else I can say about the Taurus and Sable except that I've tried to avoid them at all costs.Mar 19, 2008

Car dead on anything controlled by the ignition
my 2005 sable was dead when I went out to it from the grocery. Lights worked, beeped with keys in etc. but anything controlled by the ignition wont work. Mechanic has checked all the fuses, relays, computer and ignition switch and says I must have a short but he still cant find it

Just replaced fuel pump on car. Went to crank it and it wouldn't crank. Its like it kills the battery. Used the jump box even tried jumping it from another car. Its making a clicking noise but won't do anything
