Ford's full-size sedan, the Mercury Sable, got all of its styling and performance updates out of the way last year and returns as a carryover for 2009. Sharing its mechanics with the less upscale Ford Taurus and its platform with the Volvo S60 and XC90, the 2009 Sable comes in Base and Premier trims, both available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Its all-wheel drive is intended only to provide extra grip in slippery driving situations. A 3.5-liter, 263-hp V6 engine provides just enough power for this large sedan's needs, neither too sluggish nor particularly speedy. A 6-speed automatic with overdrive is the only transmission. Fuel economy averages 18/28 mpg. The 2009 Sable has not yet received crash test scores, but the 2008 model earned five stars in frontal impact tests. Standard ABS brakes, traction and stability control, 17-inch wheels (18 inch on Premiers) contribute to its high scores. Dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows feature rollover sensors. Backup sensors are standard on the Premier and optional for the Base. Being an upmarket sedan, the 2009 Sable Base trim offers full power features, including remote entry, cruise control, and power front seats. The CD player comes with an MP3 input jack. The Premier boosts comfort with leather upholstery, a 6-CD changer and satellite radio, more power seat settings with driver's memory, wheel-mounted audio controls, and heated front seats. It also features SYNC, a hands-free phone and music interface. Options add a DVD player, voice-activated navigation system, a sunroof, and wood trim. The Sable is nothing if not big, and it boasts class-leading front and rear legroom, with more than 41 inches for both. Four adults can not only fit easily, but can stretch out their legs comfortably. The trunk holds 21.2 cubic feet, but the rear seats split-fold 60/40 and come with a folding armrest. A cargo net comes standard with the Premier. Though not falling high on the excitement meter, the 2009 Sable offers a comfortable, satisfying ride.
