The entry-level X-Type sedan was introduced for the 2002 model year, and it quickly became Jaguar's best-selling car. The X-Type is a joint effort between Jaguar and Ford; built from an altered Ford platform and utilizing 20% Ford parts. This engineering union has been the target of much criticism, as many reviewers have jeered the X-Type for not living up to Jaguar's expected level of quality (materials-wise) and refinement. However, it can be had for less than $30,000. A new model-the Sportwagon-debuts this year, as perhaps the logical next step in a progression of Jaguar firsts. All-wheel drive, a relatively low sticker price, a five-speed manual transmission, and a station wagon were all once foreign concepts for Jaguar. Now, courtesy of the X-Type, all are realities.
Jaguar would dump the 2.5 liter engine in 2006, but it will be used once again to power the X-Type's base model. This engine produces 191 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, and can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The larger power plant is the 3.0 liter V-6, making 227 horsepower and 209 pound-feet of torque. Both transmissions are also available with this engine, which is also under the hood of the Sportwagon. Regardless of the engine choice, drivers can expect mixed driving fuel economy around 22 to 25 mpg.
All models come standard with luxury and convenience items like leather upholstery, wood trim, full power accessories, keyless entry, automatic climate control, a power driver's seat, cruise control and heated mirrors. Available option packages include Vanden Plas (3.0 only), Sport, Weather and Premium (which includes a moon roof and a power passenger's seat). A navigation system is a stand-alone extra.
Buyers have been pleased with the X-Type's overall performance. The gas mileage is the best of any Jag, and despite the smaller V-6 engines, the mid-size sedan is surprisingly quick. Test drivers also liked the car's sporty feel and nimble handling capabilities. The availability of AWD is another favorite feature for many drivers. However, there is a consensus that many of the interior materials and components are not up to Jaguar standards, and the cost of option packages quickly eliminates the car's value.

I like the style, the power and its good resale value! I dislike the high end maintenance, but you get your money’s worth and it pays off in the long run! The headliner needs to be replaced more quickly than other cars (8-10 years) and the panel on the driver’s door may get a bit loose with time, other than that the car is a keeper – we are upgrading to a 2012 May 01, 2012

With custom mods 0-60 in 5 secs, AWD grips in any condition
Nothing beets luxury of jaguar, even to simple wood trim
Exterior as any other classics jag except has modern feel and performance
Maintenance is something which is hassle, yet if you are knowledgeable about cars
then its a breeze save alot on DIYs.
But with the right mods Y x-type goes 32MPG HWY

Awesome drivers car. Felt as solid and well built as any German marque and had the big cat kudos (despite being a Mondeo really).
Refined and had excellent road manners. Servicing was reasonable but I had the 19" wheels on Sport Premium package and the tyres were expensive to replace.Mar 09, 2010

I love this car, its a 2.5 v6 all wheel drive sports, the acceleration of it is fantastic and it handles spot on due to the awd. The only down side to it is the 18.5 mpg all so due to the awd, i like the looks of it inside and out and think it looks well in silver.Dec 30, 2009

Performance is ok to be a diesel engine. But not as good as a petrol. Cheap to buy, drive and maintain. Only 0.5 l/km is good on the 2.0 Diesel. Fun car to drive, just perfect in the corners and drives like a RWD.Feb 25, 2009

The car accelerates well for a diesel, corners very well with the 18" wheels and has been 100% reliable throughout my three and a half years of ownership. The build quality is very good and after forty two thousand miles it still does not have any interior rattles which is suprising.It is good on fuel and if driven sensibly i can go to london and back twice on one tank of fuel, which is about six hundred miles on about sixty five pounds of diesel.Nov 19, 2008

The Jaguar X-Type sport was a limited run car that my father purchased in 2005 from Mellenium Motors. The car is black with 18 inch alloy rims, real carbon fibre trim, black leather/suede seats and black interior. The performance of the car is great. It handles well in the wet weather and of course in the dry because of its all wheel drive. The sound system is a factory installed Alpine system that blows the doors out with any sort of music. The trunk space is amazing for such a small car and could easily fit a bag of golf clubs (or a Marshall head with a single cab). The looks this car gets range from envy to awe. This X model is different from standard models because it sports a spoiler on the rear of the car on the trunk lid and a low profile body kit on the front of the car. This gives the X-Type a race car look to go with its race car performance. With most sports cars, back seats are as rare as front row tickets to a Rolling Stones show. This sports car "sports" a back seat that actually has leg room for someone over 3 feet tall. In other words, if you have a tall client and the front seat is being taken by your coworker, the client will relax in comfort in the back. My only complaint is the front valence of the car. Anything that has a rise over 3 or 4 inches off of the ground will cause severe damage to the valence. The one on mine has been replace twice. Words to the weary, take bumps slow if you can or avoid potential valence hazards all together. Overall, great car.Oct 27, 2008

I loved the looks of it, interior was okay, nice entry level sedan, nice to have AWD but would not want to own out of warranty.
Gearbox went out at 30k, $9000 bill, thankfully not from my pocket. First dealer was very rude and dismissive, but I finally got one that would listen and they found the problem. Then the headlights leaked, then the leather got discolored, then the sunroof broke, etc etcJul 27, 2008

Oil warning light stays on?
My oil warning light (red) stays on most of the time. I have plenty of oil. What could be the problem? Can I drive the car? It is a 2005 xtype with a 3.0 liter engine and a stick shift.
