It seems strange that Nissan is competing with itself, but the mid-size sports luxury Maxima sedan is being outsold by the larger, yet less expensive and more stylish Altima. The Maxima offers more sports-oriented features in an effort to appeal to families with parents looking for fun behind the wheel. The 2003 Maxima doesn't change much, since it got new power and features last year. Powered by a 3.5-liter, 255-hp V6 engine, it is offered in three trim levels -- GXE, SE, and GLE, with the latter being the most fully equipped. A 4-speed auto tran is standard in all but the SE, which features a 6-speed manual.
Xenon headlights, ABS brakes, Brake Assist, dual front airbags are some of the safety features in the 2003 Maxima, and this year side impact bags are standard in the GLE, while optional in all other models. Traction control is optional in both SE and GLE with the auto tran. Other options on the SE and GLE include a sunroof and navigation system. The 2003 Maximum SE, along with its side sills, 5-spoke wheels with performance tires, sports suspension, rear spoiler, and leather-wrapped wheel, gets a new Titanium Package. This adds the side airbags, chrome wheels, a compass, titanium accents, and a 6-CD changer. While the base GXE comes with cruise control, keyless entry, and full power features, including a power driver's seat, the GXE expands on this with leather seats, memory settings, power passenger seat, automatic climate control, and foglights.
The 2003 Maxima is trying its hardest to draw a more upscale customer away from the Altima. Owners love all the standard features and the xenon headlights. With a 108-inch wheelbase, the 2003 Maxima offers more leg and headroom than the Camry, and the rear seats split-fold for extra cargo room. By far the biggest attraction is the powerful engine and sporty feel. Unfortunately, drivers bemoan the wide turning radius, the need for premium gas combined with a low fuel economy, and the high price. Paint tends to chip, oxygen sensors fail early, and the Nissan customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

The 2002 & 2003 Nissan Maxima are model years that I def would recommend. Has lots of guts and without sacrificing comfort. The only suggestion is to steer clear from the light interior as it is a MAJOR magnet for stains! The Bose radio is not the worst but it isnt the best.Sep 16, 2020

This is not a common combination in a Maxima. We see 5 speed manual all over the place, but having a 6 speed stick shift and leather interior. This car's got power, it's a sports car in disguise, you can race a BMW any day and chance to have it eat your dust.

I love the inside design but i don't love the outside design as much, I think they made some improvements in looks in later models. It has lots of power and still has great gas mileage. Reliability is one of the best. May 29, 2012

Great and fast car. Handle like a Go Kart. A lot of mods and never saw a quebec winter. Build quality is excellent. It is really fun to drive. Performance are really great but now need a tune-up. Interior is mint ! Black leather seats and carpet are as new.Apr 05, 2012

Great dependable family car. These things will go forever. After an accident I decided to go through the engine and refresh a few things. At 240000 miles the cylinder walls still had the hashmarks, and the timing chain guides looked new, and the chain wasnt stretched. I need to redo the suspension, it does have 1/4 million miles on it, but other than that its a great car. Plenty of power for daily driving and gets 22 mpg.Oct 20, 2011

*performance: pulls great, the brakes could be better, and handles great when dropped on coilovers.
*build quality: pretty good, just standard maintenance.
*appearance: is in need of a lip kit.
*cost: don't buy it if you cant afford it.

I had to have my transmission fixed before the
warranty ran out. The electric window motor had to be
fixed. Just recently the motor claps had to be replaced.
Two years ago needed a new muffler. But I love my

I bought this car in the summer of 07 with 58k . It's big, comfortable, fast, and adequate on fuel . Its not cheap to own with the synthetic oil changes and premium fuel; however every time I get behind the wheel all my cares and worries disappear. Its classified as a sport sedan but it doesn't handle very sporty the ride is not stiff more like a cloud . accelleration is great either from a stand still or passing a slower vehicle ,the 3.5 VQ series motor really sings.Its pretty good in the winter as long as you are running winter rubber, the heated seats and excellent defrosting capabilities are great, the traction control is also helpful. I've invested about 2600 into it since i bought it (front and rear rotors and synthetic oil chgs) New summer tires are on the way next summer ; oh yeah also equipped it with mich x-ice on steeles for the winterSep 21, 2008

I bought this vehicle used, it had around 33K when purchased. I use it for a daily driver. It has been a great car, no complaints. Strong V6. MPG I average around 28 city and 33 hwy. Color is a charcoal metallic with a light gray leather interior. Good intro luxary car.Sep 13, 2008

A good car with enough horsepower to make anyone happy. The car overall is solid with
mild torque steer when pushing the car at WOT. The car is very responsive, but the
automatic transmission really holds it down. 0-60 time is typically 6.7 seconds.
The handling of the car is similar to any other fwd car. The added bonus is sporty feel of
the suspension.

It only took one test drive to tell that this was not the car for me... While it does accelerate, brake, and handle decently for a mid-size car, it simply did not impress me like the numbers did. 265HP seems like a very impressive number, but the car just doesn't seem like its that powerful.
