Compared to my Mercedes E320, the BMW 530i is a race car. Goes from 60 to 90 like its nothing. Seriously, you cannot tell any difference in handling or ride at higher speeds. Big trunk. Lots of storage space. OVerall very good car.Jul 24, 2014

Despite its small quirks it is still a comfortable car with the capacity of an SUV with the gas mileage of a car. I get 17.5 miles per gallon on this car, that is city driving, stop and go. The seats (sport) are one of the most comfortable seats in a car that I have sat in.Jun 18, 2013

No other car like it. European delivery - changed to Euro spec. Awesome car. Manual transmission. No rattles, squeaks. Optional M suspension. Car corners without body lean, roadholding excellent. BMW does not build cars quite this good in the new 5 seriesMay 02, 2013

Overall this is a phenomenal car, if taken care of can easily go 250K miles. Incredible driving experience with acceleration and handling phenomenal for a luxury sedan. Sport shift mode good for more power when needed but also gets fairly good gas mileage 22mpg. Classic look, black exterior and tan interior with wood trim beautiful. Sep 20, 2012

Love it - Its hard for me to believe this car is 9 years old. It handles like a dream.
Entering the freeway or passing at highway speed is a breeze. It practically begs you to take the long way home and find a twisty road.
I've had it about 11 months and can never go back.
Maintenance does cost more but in my case it's because I actually care about making sure the car is in great shape. In the past I've driven cars for months with the engine light on and it never phased me. Now I'm actually doing a legitimate maintenance plan. My advice skip the Starbucks or expensive dinner once a month and stick that money in your BMW account and have fun. (Less)Apr 02, 2012

Everything. This car bought used drives like a new car with a very tight suspension. The engine and transmission perform like new with effortless acceleration and firm but smooth up and down shifts. So far the car has been very easy to perform maintenance on; German engineering I'm sad to say is years ahead of our domestic auto makers. Oct 22, 2010

This car is so much better than Iordan's 1996 VW Gti. IT drives really smoothly, is
really comfortable, and only has 40k miles. The only bad thing is that it gets 19 mpg

Possibly the nicest looking car on the road.
The BMW E39 chassis (5-series, 1997-2003 models) were some of the best cars of their time, and highly respected among enthusiasts.
Ranging from the "economical" 6-cylinder models: the 2.5L 528i / 525i (1997-2000 / 2001-2003, respectively), the well-balanced 3.0L 530i (2001+)...to the powerful V8 models (292-HP 540i, and 400 HP M5)...these cars are very rewarding to drive.
The 525i is a bit lacking in the power department; but (M5 excluded), handles the best due to it's fiairly light weight, well-engineered suspension, steering and brakes, and perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
V8 models are powerful, and a 6-speed manual transmission was available all model years.
Reliability isn't great, and these cars require a lot of attention....but you get it all back with a superior driving experience.
Suspension bushings, shock absorbers, and key cooling system components have a short lifespan (60,000mi), and brakes / tires wear out fast if driven hard. Rear wheels have negative camber, causing uneven wear (on the inside), but provide better handling.
Expect to pay between $2000 and $5000 in maintanance and repair per year / 12,000mi (without a warranty or maintenance plan).Oct 06, 2009

love this car! bought it new, may never sell it. 2003 540 sport. no, zero, problems since end of warrt. Did frount brakes myself, $250, 45 minutes, dealer wanted $1200. Dont kid yourself, if you are not a car person and car do work yourself you will be ripped off by dealers and mechanics. It really is no more then average cars to do standard brakes and etc if you do it yourself.Sep 30, 2009

This was my second E39, the first being a 540. The performance is the inline 6 was good, but I missed the growl from the V8. The body style was my favorite of all the 5 series. Build quality was top notch with only a few things I would have changed.Jan 20, 2009

Very practical being a touring model. Does everything very well. Not all that exciting though. Not expensive to keep although servicing can cost quite a bit. Tyres seem to last well for a big car. Getting over 30000 miles from a set and thats with some fast road use as well.Aug 17, 2008

Purchased this from the BMW CPO program and am blown away by the value for money.
The car, like many BMWs, performs wonderfully with a great balance of handling and ride. Truly an executive sports sedan. The optional sports package gives an extra degree of crispness to the handling without compromising comfort.
Build quality is beyond reproach as you would expect from a premium German marque.
I love the styling, and even now prefer it to that of the current model. A design that is approaching 10 years old still looks fresh.
Life is not all peachy though. Maintenance is pricey and don't expect to save by doing oil changes at the local lube shop because BMW uses specialized parts even down to the oil filter.Jul 16, 2008

I love the car but..,it has a gutless engine, still runs like a top though. Driving the car at 110 mph the other day and the car was still eagerly pulling (like it wanted to go faster) It still amazes me everyday even though the biggest dissapointment is its gutless engine.Jan 26, 2008

ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT 03 530i BMW
So, i bought a car knowing it had the problems, but fixed everything that i thought could have caused it. but the lights still remained on. i turned my car off and decided to go inside for awhile to research. i came back out and started my car, the lights disappeared. they did eventually come back on after turning the steering wheel all the way to the left. not sure why... anyone know? or is willing to help?

2003 525I Electrical Issue?
A few months ago my radio shut off. I took the fuses out in the trunk & popped them back in hoping that would fix it. It came back on. Things have progressively gotten worse, one thing after another. The stereo randomly shuts off, I have to turn it back on. Then the buttons on my steering wheel quit working completely. The brake light & traction control light came on. No seatbelt/airbag light comes on sometimes. The steering wheel is now moving on it's own all the time up & down. Along with all the lights inside the car come on as well. I have not read my manual yet but plan to. Any thoughts as to what this could be? Fuses or actual wiring issue? Please help!
