The 2002 Impala continued to impress its drivers with a strong engine, good mileage, and comfortable ride for five adults.
The base engine remained a 3.4-liter, 180-horsepower V6, while the standard for the LS stayed a 3.8-liter, 200-horsepower V6. The standard engine gets 21/32 city/highway, while the LS pays a small cost for its larger engine, with 19/29 mileage.
The safety for both trims is excellent, with the LS slightly better with standard side airbags.

The 8th Generation Impala is my favorite car! I own a 2003 base 3.4L Impala (non-abs) and now a 2002 base 3.4L Impala (abs). The features in the 03, like sunglasses holder (above the rearview mirror) and flip-down back seat, along with a center seat back that has cup holders when flipped down. The 02 hasn’t got those features in the base model, though it does have a turn around ashtray in the center back, and a coin holder/dispenser in the center compartment. The flip up compartment in the center front is the same layout - perfect for my drink canteens and accoutrements . The controls - shift stick, wipers, headlamps, and radio are all the same that i’ve grown accustomed to. The mirrors that flip out of the driver and passenger shades are lit on the 03, in the 02, theres a main cabin light in the center instead. Probably don’t pay more than $5000 for one of these. I did, and regret not having more money to afford me sprucing up the car a lil more. Drives steady if well maintained. Neither has a roof rack, so i use a foam block and strap system when i take my kayak (this model’s tow capacity is 1000lbs, double kayak on the roof is ok too). My 03 is a beast, it has run even with rusty bits falling off, and even 6 engine error codes on - love that Impala forever! Recommend mudflaps and/or undercoating if you drive this car and live in the rust belt. Jul 23, 2024

The car is easy to handle, is a champion when it comes driving on any road surface and in all kinds of. The gas mileage is good for the size of the car. Maintainance has been low. It is a well built car and very dependable.Apr 22, 2014

Good family car. Not going to get you anywhere fast, but will fit the whole family comfortably and be a reliable car. Being a old model car, get ok gas(city high teens, highway high 20s) for size but not great. Dont get if you don't like bigger cars.Mar 01, 2014

How big and long it is. It's a big body style car in which I prefer a sportier car. This was my first car which I really enjoyed it. It was my grandfathers travel car. So it has quite a bit of miles on it, however I put 30,000 miles on it and never had a single problem occur.Jan 22, 2013

All in all its just over average, which is a very good place to start for a first time buyer. especially for the price. Ibought an impala that had rear end damage for 500, for parts, hood front bumper and front panels,ect. I bought another that had hit a deer for 800. with just using my own time and 1300$. i had purple and white impala, so i obviously painted it.Nov 19, 2012

Good daily driver, handles well and has a lot of power. It is reliable and
inexpensive to maintain. Good for interstate and back road driving, as well
as driving in inclement wether. I would recommend this car to any one
that needs a practical reliable vehicle. The low coast of maintenance

Quick, quiet acceleration! Brakes and steering are legit. No repairs except for a squeaky belt. I'll be fixing soon. Leather interior, heated seats in the front. 14MPG. The car is really fun to drive. Very easy and very nice. Love it!Mar 13, 2011

The only thing I don't like is the gas consumption. The Impala
will drink gas like it's water. Other then that it is a really fun
car to drive. Front wheel drive so that means it fish tales a

The 3800 V6 puts out a lot of power, too bad the suspension doesn't do it any good. Breaks are good, Seats are not that comfortable, lots of room inside though, easily seats 5, and the trunk is ginormous. Paint is good, and build quality is pretty decent. Sep 22, 2009

The car is built solid. It gets about 20 mpg, and has
decent acceleration, along with great handling. Interior
is leather wit all power options. Exterior is silver, only
minor scratches and paint scrapes came from when
my mom backed into a wall.... Very fun car to drive

This is a great car that i would recommend to anyone. The performance is ideal for anyone with a need for speed, and a lack of cash. It looks great and it is built very well. Its 3.8L V6 runs exceptionally smooth, and even has a good sound (at higher revs) and it has the most important quality i look for in a car, it's a blast to drive!Jul 19, 2009

Chevy impala...pretty, has balls, and is a tough work horse. The LS packs a 3.8L L36 V6 engine that pumps out 200hp. Acceleration is great! Braking and handling are good for how big the car is. No squeaks or rattles, its a very solid car. Has need a few basic repairs, nothing big. I like that it is the most fuel efficient police car out there.Jan 23, 2009

-performance: for an older large family vehicle it is pretty good.
-build quailty: hasnt broken down yet so i guess it's okay
-appearcance: beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but i'd day it's not that good looking.
-cost: VERY EASY maintenance, gas mileage is about 25-30mpg
-fun to drive?: anything is fun to drive

Although I've had to replace a couple of different
parts it is fairly reliable. I've driven it to OK and
Ames with no problems. Never broke down for me.
Large and comfortable. Not a granny car like most
ppl say. Although I'd get one for my grandma if

I had the LS with practically everything- heated leather seats, power everything, sunroof, amplified sound system, rds radio, spoiler, alloy wheels, fog lights; it was so luxurious. The car was so large, however, that cornering was not so good and I caught the rear on a pole taking a corner one night... that was the last time we drove together.Apr 20, 2008
