The Volvo S80 returns for its third year of production, with a several notable changes. A new trim level debuts this year: the upscale T6 Executive. All trim levels receive additional features, including leather upholstery, a luggage holder, retractable rear head restraints, memory mirrors, dual-stage airbags and the Homelink system. Volvo's Interior Air Quality System is now optional of the 2.9 and the T6.
The addition of the T6 Executive style will broaden the S80 price spectrum. Models now range from just under $40,000 to about $50,000. The 2.9 is the lineup's entry point, and this sedan adds restyled 16-inch wheels and an auto-dimming rearview mirror to the list of standard equipment. The Turbocharged T6 is now the mid-level trim.
There are two S80 engines. The 2.9 is powered by a 2.9 liter inline six, which generates 197 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Both T6 models house a 2.8 liter inline six, with 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, but the T-6 gets a manual shift feature. Fuel economy is estimated at 19/27 mpg for the 2.9 and 18/26 mpg for the T6.
Consumers warn about the high cost of most S80 repairs, and many have reported service stops to address transmission, turbo, and catalytic converter issues. However, the S80 does earn high marks for reliability build quality.
The S80 is ergonomically friendly overall, but steering wheel audio and climate controls are not visible to the driver. The navigation system is awkwardly placed and some displays are difficult to read. Front visibility and seat comfort are among the top S80 attributes, but rear visibility is rather limited.

It's really great car. Looks amazing. Looks like new even after 13 Years.
Most comfortable and reliable car.
Excellent traction and stability.
Must have warranty as it's gets older.

I bought my S80 used with 160k miles. I have had it for two years and it has been very reliable. It is very comfortable and a lot of fun to drive. It is not a fast car, but picks up nicely after 70. The speedometer reads to 160mph. I had it to 145 once and had to pull back. The repairs are expensive, but you get what you pay for. The most expensive repair was replacing the emergency brake system, which set me back almost a grand. Aside from that, general maintenance will cost about 1/3 more than any domestic vehicle. I live in the Adirondacks, and unlike most cars that are 13 years old around here, there is not a touch of rust on mine. This is my second Volvo (my first being an '84 240DL, also a great car), and it has been one of the best cars I have owned.Dec 31, 2013

A good car for a family, but not for a first time driver. Plenty of trunk space, heated front seats, power windows and seats, sunroof. Many electrical issues though. Seems the Service Light is always on. Good brakes, handles well.Jun 09, 2013

This vehicle has been a great family car, but still stylish and powerful. It is very comfortable and roomy, and despite its V6 automatic transmission, it has been relatively good on gas. A large gas tanks make long trips a breeze.Jul 08, 2012

My daddy gave me this car as my gift for graduating from college. I love it! Its very powerful and handles quite well. It drives similarily to a new mustang (minus the bad rear view.) Its very classy, I love the leather seats, they really last & don't even get too hot in the sun. I love the maple trim inside, so classy. I also love how the engine is dual automatic / manual so you can go extra fast.
We drove my car from Orange County to Temecula on the super windy hilly roads and my car handeled them very well since its so heavy and powerful.
Whats great about this car is that its not only luxurious, fast and sportslike, its also very classy and professional, and very roomy and even a higher end family sedan - extremely WELL ROUNDED. =)
Its a great purchase & until I am driving my white brand new M3 (which I plan to purchase not lease) I will be driving my S-80 baby. =)

VERY CLASSY CAR, very good on gas for a 6 cylinder Turbo again is GREAT to
have, the drive is like your driving on air, it had 4 gears wich is ok but not really

Very quick off the line and in a straight line not recommended for anything other than straight shots. Burns gas pretty fast, very comfortable though and rides really nice, really fun to drive. Dont like the random lights that come on.May 17, 2010

Pros: Lot of engine power, sound of inline 6,huge interior space
Cons:Too heavy, 4speed is not enough, too much power for FWD, 13-14 liter/100 km
I would love it with AWD, 6 speed manual transmission, lower fuel consumption.

I like how its not too showy but still in good taste. It runs great on the small town back roads just as good as on the major city highways with 23 MPG. This car is really fun to drive since the stero is really nice for a luxury car! It was $35,000 brand new in 2001. :D Love my Volvo and I don't care what anyone says about it!Jan 04, 2010

It is reliable, durable and not much maintenance needed. Has great sound quality for music. Great to drive even in crappy weather. Has great breaking and acceleration time. Ergonomic appearance with sunroof. Comfortable seating of five people. Plenty of trunk space.Oct 12, 2009

bare chested. has a gas cap that is made of carbon
fiber that shaves off 3 pounds of weight. will go

it has great design and quality, but some short comings. suspension rubber bushings all low quality and prematurely worn. gas mileage good - 25 mpg - for a car this size. v6 - non turbo - has plenty of giddyap

I love my car! Lucky to have it... It's solid and very heavy so I don't worry about skidding in the winter. Overall, the build quality is awesome it's only broken down twice- once because of a computer glitch 4 years ago and last year when the alternator went. No other problems- very solidly built.
Performance is very good. It's no speed demon so the pick up is pretty slow but I wasn't looking for a sports car, just something safe and classy. It's heavy and drives much like a boat- smooth and steady- a joy to drive!
This is a classy looking car mine is the classic silver and has the black trim which I really like. I love the black leather interior comfortable and classy. There is nothing I don't like about the appearance of this car!
The cost factor is the only somewhat downside of the car. It averages about 19mpg. Not terrific, but worth it. The repair costs are very high too, but any more expensive car will need more expensive parts. Over all, I believe that the other features and overall quality of the car overshadow the fact that the S80's maintenance is more costly than some other cars.
Fun factor! If you don't mind a non-speedy ride, this car has it! Lots of room- for up to 4 passengers in leather seats. The front seats are heated as are the side view windows- great for the winter! It also has radio controls on the steering wheel which I love since I have to have my music.

this car is my stepdads old car. he gave it to me because it was already paid off and he wants an excuse for a new car. The volvo is a very safe car and the best thing about it is its very fast. you barley have to touch the gas to get it going. the only downside is the volvo isnt my car of choice but its ok for now. it gets from point a to b in a good amount of time and thats what counts in my opinion.Aug 30, 2008

The S80 is designed to be Volvo''s answer to BMW's 5 series. When going in for a repair, you may feel like you just paid for a BMW, but the performance just isn't there. To be fair, the turbo option is a major upgrade in performance, but some aspects in handling really need improvement. when going over bumps in a turn, the rear end "floats" a little; kind of disconcerting at speed. Interior is decent, but expect to have to replace the headliner and side trim. center console parts tend to break as well and can set you back a couple hundred dollars for replacement. Rooad noise seems a little excessive for a car of this caliber as well. So far, this doesn't sound like a great car, but it really isn't that bad. The seats are quite comfortable and gas mileage has been around 21mpg on average with about 28mpg on the highway. The stereo system is more than adequate and easy to use while driving. Also, it is definitely the most beautiful Volvo ever made, which thinking about it, is not a hard feat to master - but beautiful nonetheless. Although I would not buy another one, its a decent car that is rated as one of the safest on the planet. If yoou don't mind paying a good price for repairs, its actually a good car and I would recommend it for the business executive or as a good family car.Oct 21, 2007
