Car is very entertaining to drive and is incredible well balanced between performance and luxury. It is a BMW after all. I have had my 530i for 1 years now. It has been a solid reliable car. It handles really nicely and has tons of power even for having an automatic transmission. The interior is spacious and is very well appointed in leather and only a small amount of wood trim. It seems just right. The quality of the materials are great. My car has about 86000 miles on it and the interior still looks very close to new. There are no rips or tears in the leather, really no signs of wear at all. The car is in great condition. There is nothing that I dislike about this car. It is impressive for a sedan, very comfortable and startling performance from the inline 6. It was a major car when new and it still is. With a little love and creativity, these older BMW's can be amazing values.Sep 02, 2013

This 2001 BMW 525i is one of the best driving cars I have ever owned. It has plenty of power and handles great in tight corners when needed. It accelerates smoothly and has very little road noise, both around town and on the highly. The exterior and interior cosmetics are classic BMW.Jan 09, 2013

Powerfull Smooth and fast, easy to drive and easy to own, but parts prices are expensive as is servicing. When the engine holds 6.5 litres of Mobil 1 the basic servicing becomes expensive. Fuel better than expected for a 3.0 litre six cylinder returning 27 to 36 mpg.Jan 03, 2013

I love the power and handling. So fun to drive. No major issues in close to a decade of ownership. Very safe and reliable car. Sound system is great. There is plenty of cargo space and there is enough room for 5 large adults. Gas mileage could be better but it could be my lead foot ;-)Oct 09, 2012

Nice Sexy, Stylish, Mean, Powerful Car. It's a daily driver and it doesnt disappoint in performance rides like it owns the road.
It does burn a little oil when driving on highway but thats normal for a BMW and this is due to performance.Jun 20, 2012

This was a great car to own. Performance was excellent from the 3L in-line six. Handling was great and was enhanced by having offset tires (wider rear tires). It did need repairs over the 5+ years I had it but the build quality was excellent - hardly any squeaks or rattles at 10 years old. Overall, a fun car to drive. It definitely weighed into my decision to buy the 7 series I have now.Mar 09, 2012

40mpg if you're careful but usually 33mpg. Quiet, efficient, reliable and gets you
where you need to go quickly and without fuss. Excellent interior on SE. Could do
with a sixth gear. Not the most exciting car to look at or drive but impressive top
speed more than adequate with so many cameras around these days. Nice to have

What can I say, the car is amazing!! everything anyone has ever wanted in a TRUE drivers Sedan, Nissan states the Maxima as a 4D sports car, I DON"T think so compared to a 540i sport. This car truely is one that if you've driven and own one chances are you still own a BMW , there is nothing else out there that handles, rides comfortably and still gets VERY respectable fuel mileage especially for a 4.4L V8.
Now for the Cons, well come to think of it besides the darn headlights needing replacing and cooling system, it's been a very rock solid car!!Sep 10, 2011

*Performance: Plenty of power for most situations and handles very well for its size.
*Quality: Overall the car is very well built, but it has had it's fair share of problems; Most of them minor and common for an older car
*Appearance: One of my favorite things about the car. The styling of both the interior and exterior is timeless.
*Cost: Once you get past the killer BMW maintenance costs, this car requires generous amounts of premium-grade fuel.

Classic BMW styling, built like a bank vault, V8 grunt and roar sounds terrific with
the windows down. Almost no noise inside when they are up. Will easily top 160
mph with the current Dinan tuning. Aftermarket and OEM parts are cheap and
plentiful. Fun and comfortable, every day driver reliable and well balanced

Fast & Nimble for 3700 lbs. Gremlins in the electrical system. Small back seats. Most everything about the m5 enthusiasts like- less the engine, & Limited slip differential for half the price on insurance & maintenance. This car was featured opposite the Toyota Corolla on a website explaining cost of ownership. Balanced, powerful and connected. 6 speed is just fantastic. It's a true 4-door sports car - period. Work vehicle, family transportation and a weekend racer. The V-8 with 300 horses, awesome torque, 6 speed tranny and heavy duty clutch make this sedan a sleeper - but can outperform any production car on the road...Sep 11, 2009

Great performance, quick and agile especiallt for a mid-sized sedan. Great quality throughout and excellent attention to detail. Still very relavent for a car that is 8 years old. Ownership costs are also reasonable for a car this age, mostly oil and gas (gets close to 20mpg in city and around 25-27 hwy or about 500miles to a tank.)Jun 03, 2009

When time came to trade in my track toys, in this case, a '99 BMW M Coupe (yes, the funning looking 2 seater) for a more practical, yet equally exclusive and high performing vehicle, nothing fits the bill better than the Individual Series BMW 540i Touring with M Sport Package. This wagon is painted in M Series exclusive Carbon Black colour, with black Montana (ordinary top grain) leather and sporty brushed aluminum trims. What make this car exclusive are the lowered and stiffened suspension, front and rear M5 spoilers/bumpers, and a more aggressive final drive ratio. The results, a wagon that handle like (and superior to in many aspects) an M5 with a fewer horsepower (100 hp) and one less gear ratio. The handling is actually more superior due to the stiffer rear suspension (designed originally to limit travel and to withstand heavier payload, employing adjustable air springs). Also being 200 lbs. lighter than an M5, this wagon is noticeably more tossable in turns and can be driven harder. Due to the lack of limited slip differential (standard on the M5), it is much harder to power slide the rear end out of turns making driving sideways less often practiced than an M5. Its pick-up is still amazing, especially when you consider how effortless it is due to the automatic transmission taking care of all the tricky bits. It certainly felt faster in the straight than all the 6 cylinder M cars I used to own. There are a few odd short comings related to its chassis dynamic: the front end geometry seems to be less tolerant to wider rim/tire/traction setup and tends to wander when the pavements are crowned (while the M5 using even wider tires did not exhibit this characteristic); and the rear end, at times, can be too jiggly and unsettling giving the car a "truck like" ride. All-in-alll, this is the aristocrats' bimmer - quite often people ask "When you can afford a 5 series bimmer, why waste your fortune on a wagon", and I usually tell them "... because I have choices." and I quite often wonder why people choose SUVs and give up precise handling, safety, and precious cargo room! This is the best diesel I have ever driven..40 mpg + great performance,and the acceleration is superb.The build quality is also brilliant, its German after all. It also handles like its on rails and should do as it runs on big 235 45 17's continentals, above all its a bmw. So if you want perfomance and economy this is the car for you...Nov 12, 2008

This is almost certainly a "special mission" vehicle. There is no suprise many special police units use this for the quick interventions. Never before I drove such a smooth and reliable car. I have been the first owner of this vehicle(since Dec 2001) and now that I am planning to sell it, it is so difficult to give it away. E39 is the classical and most elegant shape known, while the engine is from the new series BMW. This was the very last generation of old, traditionally shaped BMW and they have already started experimenting with this new engine, making this model a really special; best of both worlds. Without being pathetic, I am not sure they will ever be able to make such an excellent car with incredible simplicity, cold beauty and super-temperamental engine? I have a 2001 525i. There is some damage to the rear door on the passenger side. I would like to replace rather than repair. My question is are there differences in the dimensions of the rear door on the 5 series vs. the 3 series and 7 series that prevent them to be interchangeable? What could make a bmw not start?
Okay so I have a 2001 bmw 525i that won’t start.. I know it’s not fuel related and I’ve replaced the camshaft sensor. If I spray stater fluid in it it’ll start for a split second then die again. My service engine light is on but my code reader always says 0 codes.. I can tell that it wants to start but I’ve run out of ideas for what it could be, so if someone could give me an idea that’d be great
