The BMW 525i, introduced for the 2001 model year, was powered by an all-new 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produced 184 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, while a five-speed automatic was available as an option.
Thanks to a minor redesign for the entire 5 Series lineup for 2001, the 525i was distingished by its kidney-shaped grille outside and redesigned dashboard inside.
Standard features for the 2001 525i included traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, 16-inch alloy wheels, dual front airbags, and front side airbags.
Other standard features included air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power door locks, power heated mirrors, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a leather-trimmed shift knob, cruise control, fog lights, a keyless entry system, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and an AM/FM stereo system with a cassette player.
Drivers noted that the 2001 BMW 525i handled well, and provided good performance and a smooth ride. In fact, some considered it to be the ultimate ride. But others found interior room to be limited, and others noted that the options packages were expensive. Oddly, there were also numerous complaints about the flimsy cup holders.
