Chrysler conducted a full redesign for the Town & Country in 2001, bringing the long-running minivan into its fourth generation. Trim levels are the same: buyers can choose between LX, LXi, and Limited, each available in FWD and AWD. A new EX trim is also available for 2001. Chrysler has also added a power lift gate, removable center console, and additional power outlets. The Town & Country's RS platform is also new this year, replacing the previous NS foundation.
The same two Town & Country engine options are carried over from the previous generation. The front-wheel drive LX and LXi models are the only models to house the 3.3 liter Flex Fuel V-6, which provides 180 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic is paired with this engine, and fuel economy is estimated at 18/24 mpg. All other models, including the more modestly equipped EX, are powered by the 3.8 liter OHV V-6, generating 215 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity with the 3.8 liter engine is 3500 pounds. Fuel economy drops to 17/22 mpg.
Used car shoppers should note that this model year predates Chrysler's flexible and convenient "Stow N Go" seating, which arrived later in the fourth generation. The lack of configurable seating is a downside to these older Town & Country models.
All models are considerably well-appointed, but the addition of extra amenities can become very costly. Owners have expressed satisfaction with the overall ride quality and car-like handling, generous standard features and safety (especially on the AWD models). However, the Town & Country is still hampered by Chrysler's reliability issues. Common complaints include very frustrating experiences with dealer service, heat and A/C malfunction, faulty electrically systems, and transmission flaws.

What owners say
"The 2001 Chrysler Town & Country generally receives mixed reviews from owners. Many love its spacious interior, comfortable seating, and the convenience of features like automatic doors and rear air control, making it ideal for family trips. However, there are significant complaints about its reliability, especially after the warranty period, with frequent repairs needed for its performance components. While some appreciate its power and handling, others criticize its fuel economy and long-term mechanical issues."
The good: This van is great looking, very comfortable, handles well, has lots of power, and is great to drive. The captains chairs, rear bucket seats, tv, rear air, and leather make it a comfortable ride for everyone. It's really great for long trips. The 4-wheel disc antilock breaks are nice and I have always felt very safe driving this vehicle. The 3.8 V6 makes for quick acceleration and can handle hauling all your peeps easy. The bad: Ugh where do I start? As soon as it rolled over on 140k miles, I started having trouble with it. I have 189k miles on it now. I've replaced the transmission, engine, radiator, and a/c compressor as well as other smaller parts. The driver's side rear door motor went first, then the passenger side. The doors still open manually, but not with the buttons anymore. The gas mileage on the 3.8 V6 sucks, about 19mpg on a good day. Because of the mechanical problems I've had with this vehicle (and the cost of repairs!!), I will NEVER own another Chrysler, Dodge, or Plymouth product.
May 4, 2012We have a family of six and thought that this would be an ideal vehicle. The interior size is decent. The vehicle itself is one repair after another. Once my vehicle came out of warranty, everything fell apart on this vehicle. From the struts to the transmission, and everything thing in between.
September 23, 2007Love the space availability for trunk storage and detachable rear seats for cargo space. Power options are equally awesome. Rear heat/AC control is highly remarkable. It is a fun vehicle for family trips with additional DC power outlets for electronics and other devices utilization.

March 1, 2011We have had our van since it had 18,000 miles, now it has 175,000 it has been great, but we have the bigger 3.8 engine and have taken care of it, oil changes nipped any noises in the bud etc. we have the leather seats which have held up vary well, but they aren't the most comfortable in the year model. It has handled very good and in the mountains has done very well, except on steep downhill grades the brakes will get very hot, its very heavy and you feel it then. over all we have not had any major repairs and hope to drive it for about 100,000 miles!
March 6, 2012we picked this up when it was ten years old, but it only had 22,000 miles on it. It literally looked and even smelled like a brand new car. It has plenty of room for lots of people and their stuff. The leather interior is very nice, except on wintery cold days. The automatic side doors have come in handy, and it is one of the quietest cars I have ever owned. It even has guts (for a minivan). All of the gauges are handy, although switching the read outs on the ceiling console is tricky if you are driving.
December 20, 2011Overall, this is a stellar family vehicle for anyone who lives in a snowy climate or you want something to pull a ski boat with the family and all the camping gear! Wish they still made the AWD limited I'd buy another one!
December 15, 2011I have had car for 2 years and it works great. Love it especially on long trips.
January 22, 2008I like all of this car. Will buy another next year. Perfect for travelling of course, but easy driving in town and easy for parking. Very comfortable seats, rear lines as well! A bunch of space. Silent inside while driving.
November 18, 2014Smooth ride when working properly. I like that the mirrors are attached to the van instead of the doors so you can still see when the doors are open. I would like the second row to have three seats. not easy to clean the areas where second row seats attach, the holes. the jack that came with van broke after two uses.
December 21, 2012Good looking van. Functional much better than a Ford but not a Toyota.
