2000 Subaru Outback Preview summaryImage

Is the Subaru Outback hot, dry, sandy, and full of dangerous creatures? Well, no, but like Australia's famed interior landscape, the 2000 Subaru Outback is a more rugged, hardy version of the more suburban Legacy, on whose platform it is based. Previously available as a Legacy trim, the 2000 Outback is now its own separate model in both a Limited sedan and three types of wagon -- base, Limited, and Sport. Along with the Legacy this year, the 2000 Outback adds inches to its length and gets a retuned 2.5-liter boxer H4 engine that now hits 165-hp with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

Full-time all-wheel drive is common to all Subarus, but the 2000 Outback distinguishes itself from the Legacy with an inch higher ground clearance, beefier 16-inch tires, larger foglights, and 2-tone body cladding that's meant to take more punishment. Though not a true off-road vehicle, it can tackle tougher roads and weather than the Legacy. All of the Outbacks come standard with power features, cruise control, daytime running lights, ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and 24-hour road assistance, which is new this year. The Limited sedan and wagon add on side impact bags and more luxury features such as heated leather seats. Rear seats in all trims split-fold 60/40 for up to 68 cubic feet of storage and a cargo cover is standard.

The 2000 Outback also reinforces its body for a more stable and safer ride this year. Wagons are more popular than sedans, for the extra headroom, cargo space, and roof rack. The Sport wagon is actually based on the Impreza, and is sometimes included in that lineup. It has a less powerful 2.2-liter, 142-hp H4, and this year it gets a rear spoiler and cruise control. Rugged durability is what attracts 2000 Outback owners to this SUV alternative. Because it sits lower to the ground, it is more stable, and its car platform makes it easier to handle. However, drivers feel it needs more power, better gas mileage, and stronger brakes. There were also issues this year with blown head gaskets and failed oxygen sensors.

Hands down one of the best vehicles I've ever driven. Easy to see out all windows for backing and switching lanes. Lots of cargo space with back seats folding down flat. Sleep in it and view the stars while car camping. Tie cargo to the top or put a Yakima rack on it. Hauled a kayak on it frequently. Never used the tow but it looks like a nice package with the wiring inside the spare wheel space.Dec 14, 2014

Fun car to drive, good acceleration and braking. Not as sporty as the smaller sport version, but definitely more reliable. Roof rack very nice for strapping gear down. The fold down flat back seats make packing very easy and spare tire easy access.Dec 14, 2014

If you live in the mountains, in lots of snow or just need a super reliable vehicle, own a Subaru!!! It's commonly known that they last well over 300,000 miles and while the repairs can be expensive they are worth the investment for the future. They are not only super safe, really reliable, sporty and fun to drive, they are cars you can trust your teenager in as well as drive your newborn home knowing they may some day learn to drive that same vehicle.
