The 2000 Volkswagen Passat lineup remained virtually unchanged from the previous year, though a few upgrades were added to the list of standard features and a few new tweaks and details we added to freshen the car up a bit.
Passat buyers could choose from two trim packages and two engine options. Trim packages included the entry-level GLS and the higher-end GLX. Standard features on the GLS included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, anti-lock brakes, traction control, cruise control, front and side airbags for the driver and passenger, a keyless entry system, daytime running lights, and an updated anti-theft alarm system with a coded ignition key. The GLX package added a sunroof and leather seats (powered in the front) as standard equipment, among other features.
An indicator on the dash that alerted drivers to brake wear was added as standard equipment in 2000. And after being delayed a year, VW's all-wheel-drive system, called 4MOTION, was finally available as an option.
The two engine options included a 1.8-liter, 150-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder, which was available only with the GLS trim package, and a 2.8-liter, 190-hp V6, which was dropped into both the GLS and GLX versions. A five-speed manual transmission was standard in the GLS, with a five-speed automatic available as an option; the automatic transmission was standard on the GLX package.
The high cost of upkeep was one of drivers' main complaints about the 2000 Passat, with the engine/powertrain and the electrical system cited as among the necessary repairs. On the positive side, drivers reported good gas mileage with the turbocharged 4-cylinder. Other positive points included the Passat's handling, styling, and roominess.
What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat have mixed feelings. Many appreciate its fun driving experience, good handling, and impressive gas mileage. However, a number of owners have reported significant maintenance issues and high repair costs, which has left some feeling frustrated. While the car is praised for its comfort and interior features, electrical problems and expensive parts are common complaints."
Great gas mileage. Reliable German engineering. But, prone to O2 sensor failures. Nothing major though. Makes a good daily driver. And, it has decent acceleration for a 1.8L turbo 4 door. Also, because of the turbo, the car requires premium gas. But, with premium I get like 30-34mpg hwy.
November 15, 2009Acceelerates very quickly, brakes in no time, and with a few adjustments handles like a charm. Does have some issues with the emissions workshop checklight, but overall no really expensive fixes. The styling of the car is beautiful and the interior is very luxurious. I can get anywhere from the mid 20s to about the higher 30s for MPG depending on how I drive. One of the most fun cars I've ever driven
February 26, 2011Great car. It's quick and has good handling. Just keep up on the maintance.

June 20, 2008It surprises drivers of luxury brands how much power it has from the line. Handling is fairly good. Clearly not Porsche good but well enough to have fun with. Electrics in this car are also much better than expected. No corroded contacts or glitches.
October 3, 2014handles wonderfully, good power for size, feels sporty with manual transmission great build quality, wonderful interior. love the seat warmers sorta bland styling, but nice 30-35 mpg highway with a light foot, about 27 average really fun to drive
September 11, 2009Model: BG Power 142 kW 193 hp Weight: 1555 kg Transmission: 5 speed tiptronic Accelleration 0-100 km/h: 9.7 s Overal consumption: 11 l/100 km Weitec coilover, Oxigin Eins 18" black Very nice car for winter. Too stif suspension for Finnish roads with weitec coilovers.
March 10, 2009This was my first grown- up car, but let me stress not too grown up. As an Architect the design is very important to me. The car is beautifully, simple modern, tight and lovely. VW has left me in a bind as the new Passats are bit frumpy & too soft in the ride- no longer just grown up, but middle age. The 2000 is comfortable for long road trip and city commutes. The V6 holds a lot of Zippity do. After 15 years and 175,000 very tough city miles-Johann will be a third back up car. This has been my favorite VW above all we have owned including a Cabriolet, Golf, Jetta and (2) V6 Passat wagons. I love this car!
January 17, 2015Accelerates well. Handles exceptionally well around corners. Lots of pep. ABS brakes are great. Solid yet quiet & smooth ride. These cars can easily run for 250,000 plus miles. Full size spare tire in trunk (not a donut) is a nice feature.
January 5, 2015The handling is great and acceleration is more responsive than a Mustang. The interior is so nice and the stock speakers have great bass to them. I love driving this on windy roads because of the German sports car feel to it
January 7, 2009fun to drive, comfortable, good handling
