Nissan's personal mid-size luxury car that promises a sporty performance, the 2000 Maxima emerges this year fully redesigned in an effort to stay competitive with the Accord and Camry. One way it does this is by increasing its length and adding two inches to the wheelbase. The 108 inches expands interior leg and shoulder room, make it more spacious and with a bigger trunk (15.1 cubic inches) than its closest rivals. The 3.0-liter V6 engine also gets a 32-hp boost up to 222-hp, again beating out the ratings of the Camry and Accord.
The 2000 Nissan Maxima comes in base GXE, sporty SE, and luxury GLE trims. A 5-speed manual is standard on all but the GLE, where you'll find a 4-speed automatic. The auto tran is optional on the SE and GXE. A retuned sports suspension is stiffer for better handling and less shudder, and the performance tires (ranging from 15 to 17-inch) improve road grip. ABS brakes and dual front airbags are standard across the line, with side airbags now available as an option. Traction control is also offered as an extra with the auto tran. A new grille, lights, and body shape offers a sporty, aerodynamic look overall.
Even the base GXE is well equipped with power features, but the GLE adds leather seats, automatic climate control, wood accents, and power driver's seat. The sports-oriented SE carries a rear spoiler, 5-spoke alloy wheels, foglights, and black trim on the grille. Heated seats and a sunroof are available on all models. Owners seemed to like the new style of the 2000 Maxima, and say the ride is smoother and quieter, thanks to new sound insulation. The extra engine power is noticeable, especially with acceleration, and the interior is roomy and comfortable, though the backseat is a bit cramped. Peeling paint is a minor problem, but the 2000 Maxima had frequent problems with the ignition coils and oxygen sensors.

aw yeah. I love my car. Drives like a champ. Acceleration is pretty fast and the brakes are touchy which i love. The wheels shakes a lil around 85-90 but im over it. No squeaks and only rattles when I crank up the bass but i fixed that for the most part. The interior is all leather which is nice and i like the look of the outside.
August 14, 2010In general it is a good car to have 1. Mechanically reliable, good engine, good transmission, recently changed tires, never gave me a problem on highway. 2. V6 engine is fast to accelerate on a short highway ramp. 3. leather interior, not have to worry about spill. 4. Sun roof, nice to drive around in summers. 5. heated seat and power seat, very convenient to use. 6. Bose stereo, necessary for musics and radios on a long-distance travel. 7. large enough size, give you more safety and more space inside.
March 11, 2014We bought our Maxima in 2002 with 34k on it. Very sporty handling and acceleration. At 75k, SVC Engine light started coming on. Traced to faulty firing cells, car would run but miss and stumble. Nissan acknowledged this problem, but would not recall car. $80 apiece times six to replace+labor. This car DOES NOT like Ethanol fuel. I have to run a tank of non-ethanol every 3rd fillup to keep O2 sensors happy. Replaced sensor behind cat. converter as ethanol fuel creates an overrich condition on rear 02 sensor. Mileage is between 26-29 depending of fuel used. Also has odd sized tires, most stores don't stock them. I'm 6'2" and getting in and out is not the easiest. Car does not have a fuel filter, if it plugs up, the fuel pump assembly has to be replaced

March 7, 2011fully loaded: leather, Bose premium sound system, sunroof, 230bhp and 217 ft-lbs of torque from a Nissan VQ30DE-K engine....needs some tints and a few performance mods...new tires, starter, and h.I.d. headlights, GAB airbox...car is washed and waxed once every two weeks, detailed once a month, and claybar'd twice a year
July 21, 2008I like beautiful design, comfort, premium sound, very good engine, wonderful body and color, heated seats that I used often. It is very reliable car. The acceleration of this car is smooth and fast. Car is very maneuverable. Easy to park.
January 5, 2014This car is pretty much perfect. Nice design, good features, great performance, good looking, build quality is fantastic, inexpensive, etc. The car has run for ten years straight, never a single problem. Sound system is fine stock. This car is perfect.
August 29, 2009Considering it was the newly redisinged, got a faceleift, it was amazing. Bigger, more spacious, more power, it seemed like a great buy. Like any new car, the car was great as any new car would be, but this generation was notorious for not testing the engine estensively to find the kinks you normally would expect a manufacturer to find. Notorious for having bad maf sensors, and owners found out the hard way. Everything else about the car, is strong, solid. Reliable engine, and good transmission. I average 24 mpg, with a 3.0 v6. That's awsome, and it's fun to drive. Makes for a great family car, while keeping the fun to drive factor.
November 10, 2008Contrary to what most people think, the Maxima is a damn solid car. Coming from a racing background, it has a very good chassis for a 4 door sedan. My only two complaints, which could be solved by one request is if it was rear wheel drive and turbocharged. But we dont get that luxury that they do in Japan (Cefiero). If the maxima were even just rear wheel drive with the same VQ powerplant, it would be a classic. It was extremely convienient, had loads of room both in the cabin and the trunk, was pretty quick, almost as fast as my previous Mustang. Would've sounded good with some mods but as a daily commuter, i didn't feel the need to do anything to it. Overall, i would take this over the mustang any day. If you're looking at these cars, maintenece can be a bit bothersome and costly, so make sure the used one you buy has been properly cared for. As well as model year, the 2000-2002 i believe were the 222 hp and the car weighed 3100 lbs. (pretty light for how big it is, helped it handle really well). Then in 03- it's the same body style but they added the 3.5 instead of the 3.0 which also came with a 6 speed. The hp went up to 255, but i feel like the car's balance went sort of out the window just a touch with the extra nose weight. My model i feel was right on the verge of being too heavy in the front, but it was still a blast, you could get little rear end slides with agressive cornering. The extra power and weight of the 03 made it easier to overload the front tires.
August 21, 2008Drives nice, pretty good power, comfortable. I had no buyer's remorse when I bought this car used with 70K miles. I really enjoyed the way it handled, the power it had and the over-all look of it. Sadly I totaled it and am looking to replace it with another Maxima.
November 12, 2010Awesome car, this is the third Cefiro/Maxima/i35 I have owned. Very solid, amazing handling experience, all the power you may want (very high torque)
