The 2000 Grand Cherokee was available in two trim levels, Laredo and Limited. Two engines were available, a six-cylinder and an eight-cylinder, and vehicles were equipped with two-wheel or four-wheel drive.
After a complete redesign in 1999, the 2000 Grand Cherokee received only minor appearance and equipment changes. The 4.7-liter PowerTech V8 was now available in two-wheel-drive versions and with the Selec-Trac transfer case in four-wheel-drive versions. New softer leather seat material was available and two new exterior colors were offered.
The Cherokee was the first unibody sport-utility vehicle, as distinct from the traditional body-on-frame approach. The advantages are much higher rigidity and much lower weight, which contribute to the Cherokee's good handling.
Although the basic Cherokee was available with rear-drive only, it wouldn't really be a Jeep without four-wheel drive. There are two levels of 4WD available for the Cherokee, part-time Command-Trac and full-time Selec-Trac.
Drivers report the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee is safe, comfortable, and reliable. They also say it gets low gas mileage and "things break."

For the price, this car will be an excellent city car for hauling equipment. The features are all pretty basic for a 2000 model (I prefer having a cassette deck), and the stereo is in decent shape (I have to replace the tweeters). This car is similar to other midsize early 2000s SUVs like the Pathfinder, XTerra, or 4Runner.Mar 20, 2023

I liked it for quite a while...then gas prices soared. Regretted purchase every time I gassed up. Very nice to have the 4WD in winter. Handled like a champ. It walks right through snow & slush. Sitting up high for visibility is nice. I wish I would have went with the Subaru Forester.Jan 25, 2015

I've loved owning this Jeep, when I moved to MA it was the best thing to handle the ups and downs of the weather.. I put on Pirelli tires and have never felt less than 100% confident on the road.Jul 19, 2014

I loved owning this car in Jackson, WY and driving it across the country. It's an excellent vehicle for towing and carrying gear year round -- skiing to whitewater rafting to kayaking to camping -- it's seen it all. Still has all capabilities despite high mileage, though I had to repair many things once I bought it and now it is in great shape. Drives well on passes and in mountain and unusual terrain, as well as every day commuting. Down side now is having a large car in a suburban/urban setting where there are fewer outdoor sports -- and finding parking!Nov 12, 2013

A bit uncomfortable for guests in the back seat on long trips. Feels very safe when driving. Very confortable driver's seat. Love the V8 engine. Leather is nice quality and towing is a dream. Low mantienance vehicle; would buy another.Aug 17, 2012

Love this Jeep. With the 4.7 V8 it is spirited to drive. Tows the sled trailer with
ease too. Selectrac 4 wheel drive is good for anything you can throw at it. Will do
20mpg on the open road which is not too awful for a V8 four wheel drive. Peppy
and smooth. I upgraded the TCM to the 545RFE unit and now have a 5 speed auto

love the power...although it weighs 2.5 tons, the acceleration is impressive. a solide vehicle. comfortable ride, soft suspension...handles well...quattro...not costly to maintain as long as you maintain regularly. normal driving...not heavy on fuel...but when you feel the need for speed...V8...Jun 02, 2010

This was a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 4x4. It had the 4.0L I6 with a cold air intake, throttle body spacer, oversize tires, 2" lift, brush guard, roof rack, off road lighting, halo projector headlights, in dash dvd player, after market speakers, and heated leather. The 4x4 was superb. Rarely gets stuck and the motor will outlast the vehicle for sure. These things are unstoppable. Mar 31, 2010

V8 power is amazing and will snap your neck back
anytime. tweak the tms and it will smoke all 4 tires. if
your looking for a suv that is a gas sipper go buy a
honda. if you want awesome power and nice comfy
leather with heated seats that will burn your ass buy
one. 137,500 miles and the transmission is still

This car is reliable, powerful, safe, relatively good handling, good utility, and somewhat good fuel economy.
This jeep with the 4.0L I6 is very smooth very responsive and has respectable power, even better on the freway. The body roll doesn't inspire fast cornering but is capiable of fast cornering, the steering doesn't have much feel and is light at low speeds, but nicely weighted at higher speeds.

Performance is great, the Legendary 4.0 is just an amazing engine. very reliable, and torquey, plenty of power, and reasonable gas mileage.
The interior is extremely high quality for a Chrysler product. I've never had much trouble with Jeep interiors, but this one takes the 1st prize. The ride quality is also very smooth. For a solid axle Jeep 4x4, it rides very nice. It actually rides a lot smoother than my buddy's 4x4 Liberty with IFS.
I think it's one of the best looking Grand Cherokees, the only thing I don't like visually is how low the gas tank hangs, to accommodate the spare being under the rear floorboard.
Like I said, reasonable mileage, I can get 22 or so on the highway, and up to 18 on the streets, though I usually don't.
It's a blast off road, the full time 4wd option makes it great in foul weather, it's an awesome Jeep I definitely recommend it over any other mid-size SUV in it's class.Oct 05, 2009

What's not to like; the great styling, the unbeatable off road capability, the beastly 4.7 Powertech V8. I love it for camping, offroading, towning, and the POWER. The seats are the most comfortable i have ever been in, and the sound system is beast. I think I will always own a Jeep. It a Jeep thing, you wouldnt understand.

the mpg on this tuck sucks but the truck is very reliable cant

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought it when we were expecting our first child. Cons: Poor gas mileage, not fun to drive on a long trip.
Pros: great storage, the ride is smooth and it tows well. Very cheap to maintain and has never needed a major repair.Jan 05, 2009

4.7 liter v8 is amazing and sounds great with
flowmaster 40 series. The quadra drive 4 wheel drive

This car is simply amazing. The monstrous V8 puts out a good amount of torque and horsepower, as well as the quadra-drive is very effective. The gas millage is not the best (14.6mpg for me, but I drive aggressively), but is effective. There are no problems with the car unless you are aggressive, then your transmission could be at risk. Its fuel consumptions is huge, but is a very solid and great fun off road. Its appearence on the road to me makes a huge statement, is has a mean look with a touch of class.

i really like this car. i is my first car and definitally not my last jeep. I didnt know it when i bought it but my car is a beast off road. to even better improve it i have added a lift and other off road accessories. To make this quick, this car saved my life. I was t-boned directly on the drivers door by a delivery van doing about 65 MPH as he blew through a red light. I ended up with some fairly serious injuries, but I've been told I should not have survived the crash.Aug 21, 2008

I love this car to pieces. The seats are the most comfortable things ever. Jeep builds a very mechanically sound car. The only downside is that it has a lot of plastics and cheap materials in it...but the sound system is amazing! Power is weak. It only a 195 HP, but it delivers when necessary, but forget about racing the sucker. The one thing I hate the most about it is the gas mileage. My car averages 15mpg... On a side note, the 4WD system really works. It's not nearly as advanced as modern systems are, but I have a hard time getting the thing to kick out in snow or dirt. Damn can this thing off road as well!! The only reason I would get rid of my car is for something with better mpg's, but otherwise I would buy myself a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland is gas wasn't an issue.Aug 12, 2008

my jeep is an ok jeep. not the best in the world but ok. breaks are heavy, steering is heavy but thats because of the solid front axle. acceleration sucks because of the inline six. good torque but not enough horsepower. the build quality is ok. its a solid car but occasionaly there is a squeek coming from the front end if i'm making a hard turn and hit a pretty significant bump but it sounds like the steering linkages are binding. other than that no sounds or anything. gas mileage isn't that great i get about 15 to 16 average between highway and intown and with a 18 gallon tank that means i have to fill up once ever 4 or 5 days and its usually about 60 bucks with it somewhere between 1/4 and empty.Aug 02, 2008

it runs good took it all the way to florida last winter. but the down side of it is that i seem to always be replaceing part in the front end. It is a comfortable ride, but gets horrible gas mileage and costs a whoppin' 70 bucks to fill up the tank. But all in all it is a good car and I really like itJul 20, 2008

I like how my Jeep isn't a small car or a mid sized car. I like being able to drive down a road and see what's under me and around me. I love how the Jeep is the best at going onto rough surfaces, going through the ice and snow and deep water. A small car or truck couldn't do that so well. I dislike how I don't have a trailer hitch on my tail end like some other Jeeps of my year and model do. I dislike the gas mileage but that's my fault for choosing it even if the gas prices 2 years ago were cheaper. Other than that I love my Jeep!Jun 14, 2008

The jeep has had little problem living up to its heritage in my eyes, there are just a few things I would change, The tire size and space available for larger more agressive tires is extremely limited. For a jeep, this should deffinitly be rectified.A full skid plate package should be standard for and jeep, unless of course it's not a real jeep,(compass). Tow hooks front and rear should be another standard part for any jeep. A rear locker would be nice. A big dissapointment for me came when I noticed my headlight lenses were becoming hazy and yellowed to a point of less than pleasing visability at night. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is, Every vehicle that carries the jeep name should come standard with on-board-air, 2nd battery, auxillary lighting in the wheel well area for at night tire changes, a first aid kit, and last but not least a agressive all-terrian tire.Aug 22, 2007

Grand Cherokee dies while driving
I have a 2000 jeep grand Cherokee 4.0 2 wheel drive and it has an antitheft installed and it when I'm driving down the road it'll cut off usually it'll start right back on but lately it'll just crank for about 2 to 3 minutes then it'll turn right back on but in order for it to crank over I have to turn the key off after the jeep has died, unlock the jeep, and then turn it back on what would cause that to happen

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo No brake lights or reverse lights
My 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo has no brake lights when I press down brake no light on tail lights or on the 3rd brake light. I have replaced brake light switch, neutral safety switch and light bulbs, still nothing. I have pulled out and tested every single fuse and also tested all relays nothing wrong with em all working properly. I'm not sure what else it might be I have youtube just about every video I could find on the issue im having.
