The Nissan Altima, which was redesigned in 1998, saw very few changes for the 1999 model year. The biggest change was the addition of a new trim, the SE Limited, which had a sportier suspension, more luxury features, and special badging.
The 1999 Altima came in five trims: the base XE, the midrange GXE, the sporty SE and SE Limited, and the luxury GLE. The GXE was the most popular model, and the GLE came standard with leather seating and a power driver's seat. All Altimas in the lineup shared a 2.4 liter, 150 horsepower four cylinder engine. Fuel economy is 21/29 mpg.
The Altima is popular because it offers a good value but doesn't feel like an economy car. Drivers praise the 1999 Altima for its reliability and ample trunk space. Some owners find that the styling is a little bland.
What owners say
"Overall, Altima owners appreciate its reliability, dependability, and comfort, making it a solid choice for a first car. Many drivers highlight its economical fuel efficiency and performance, especially at higher speeds. However, some drivers dislike the uncomfortable seat angle for long trips and poor gas mileage in certain conditions."
Most reliable car I've ever owned. One of 50 sold in the US with a manual transmission. At 146000 miles it still has the original clutch. No squeaks or rattles, and a great highway cruiser. My only gripe about this car is that it is rusting...bottom of passenger door is pretty bad
September 29, 2010Have owned the car for almost 100k now, 130k on the Odometer, and have done nothing but general maintenance. Starts every time, great gas mileage, and very comfortable.
May 10, 2008Mine has 140K+ miles on it and it still runs great. If well maintained, this car will last a long time.

May 5, 2008I loved this car. I had it three years before my stupid misuse/under maintenancing of the vehicle cracked the head. I once got from Norman, Oklahoma to Austin, Texas with an eight to a quarter tank to drive around with. She was extremely fuel efficient on the highway. She seemed a little easy to spin out though, especially on bad tires. great car...
March 15, 20135 Star Quality / Performance / Reliability / Cost of Ownership / Fun 5 Star Overall - A Gem Only two drawbacks: Seat angle is uncomfortablefor long drives, wide turning radius. Still not tired of this car after 10+ years. Unbelievable that it has quicker acceleration and less road noise than many new cars I have been test driving (VW, Acura, Toyota - initial acceleration delays).
July 7, 2010Altima has been a dependable and economical vehicle for my 3 high school and college kids.
September 27, 2007This is the first car I have ever purchased and it has lasted . It is really easy to drive, it has few mechanical problems and has great space for passangers and luggage. I like Nissans so I am proud of the fact that it is one too
February 20, 2014this car is really a good car, depenable, and reliable, it takes me where I need to go and is a gas saver.
December 16, 2007i like the overall look about it but i hate the fact that i have to fix my engine and fix the timing belt. but as long as u keep it in good shape i think it is a nice car to have for a first car but not as a life car
August 2, 2008This is can last for years; the bulit is durable and easy to maintain. The car alerts you when something is wrong. Smail enough to park in tight spots. The moon sunroof allows the sun and fresh air through out the car in hot summer days. The leather seat is easy to clean.
