We have had this Jeep in the family since 2001, and before that it was a lease vehicle. Locally owned, our family as enjoyed its function, power, ability to traverse snowy grounds, sand, and more over the years. Fun car which we have enjoyed, and continue to. The V8 is silky smooth, and has power to spare - torque. Pulls a full sized boat up Cuesta Grade at 75mph w/o blinking. Amazing! The full time 4x4 allows for extra traction on wet road trips and on our ventures to the Sierra Nevada's on snowy trips - our Jeep made this a joy. The blacked out privacy glass, also OEM, and cover in th rare makes for a clean look and privacy in hauling items. One thing we always apprecited in this vehicle was the ability of the rear seats to lay down, making a perfectly flat (flat) surface in the rear of the Jeep. Quite the hauler. Quiet fun. Quite nice! I have no problem driving here in New England during or after snow storms. This SUV handles great, easily passing cars with front wheel drive stalled on the Hwy trying to go up a hill during snow storms. 245K miles to date (purchased used with 35K miles), mostly Hwy. Just replaced the brakes for the third time........yes third time. The interior an exteria are still in very good shape / no rust / one small tear in drivers side leather seat. If this engine was to finally go today I'd consider replacing the motor and stay with this SUV. Jan 10, 2012

My kids love the Jeep and I miss driving it! We have Ipod/Iphone hook up on the stereo! Great sound. The V8 is a must in a Jeep. She has seen a lot of snow and has yet to get stuck. My hubby uses it as a daily driver and he loves that it gets out of the way of other vehicles. Weve used it to pull up old hedges/bushes that housed bugs and bees. We tied a logging chain to the tow hitch and the bushes and pulled them out of the ground with out fail! That was fun. Weve driven her up the entire east coast in snow, sleet and rain. From Bangor Maine to Miami Florida and in between. If the Jeep had a 3rd row, Oh my god, that would be the ultimate! Acceleration is great in the Jeep. Never hesitates to eat the road. Great for old and young drivers. Having the tow hitch is a great feature for bike racks. I cant say enough good things about my Jeep. When we first got the Jeep, it failed inspection because the battery wasnt adequate. We replaced it for a heavy duty battery that weve had in for years now with no issue. We had to replace the blend doors for heat and ac. Got a deal for $800 when it would have cost $1200. Have to replace the tweeters every 2 years or so and the factory front speakers unless you get a non factory speaker fyi. Great vehicle.Jan 07, 2012

Great all round 4x4. Great performance, plenty of power, quick acceleration, good brakes, handles well, good overall build quality, built to last, good looking car, nice shape (not boxy) nice interior (Full leather and wood) nice alloy wheels, cheap to average on part prices, I found it cheap to insure (SureTerm Direct) As for gas & mileage? aroud town 11 - 14 to a gallon but on a run (Ie ..Motorway) 22 - 26 to a gallon, remember this is a big & heavy 4x4 soI think its quite good on fuel. The Jeep performed well, had gobs of power and was comfortable. Handling was decent for an SUV. I thought this car was HOT beyond words and just loved everything about the styling. Quality, however, is horrendous. Nothing worked for long and it was truly a money pit. Any redeeming factor about this car was quickly overshadowed my MAJOR mechanical problems. Feb 20, 2010

I miss my Jeep a lot, especially on nights where the sky was clear and the valley was visible. Performance: I was lucky to get the rare 4.10 ratio on my Jeep, and because of that, it climbed whatever I wanted in 4 lo. The V8 had plenty of power when I needed it, and the gears worked perfectly. MPG was a heartbreak, though, so I had to let it go. Quality: Everything was firm and not moving. The build felt extremely solid. Appearance: Although I would have liked to change the seat design, the leather interior was a bonus, and everything was laid out well. The red exterior without the Laredo trim was definately a plus, and I enjoyed being nearly the only one with a limited edition. Cost: Insurance was higher than I wanted, and purchasing gas was a pain. However, everything was easy to maintain as long as you gave it attention. Fun Factor: I loved going places in this! The ride was wonderful, the power was great, the Infinity Audio performed admirably, and I always knew when I needed another fill up because it would talk to me.Sep 15, 2009

I love my jeep overall. The only things I do not like are the gas mileage and the fact that I have had to do dozens of repairs and replacements on parts. I currently need to get the ignition fixed because I can pull the key out while the car is on and sometimes I have to pull the tilt and jam the steering wheel to make the key able to turn and start it. First year of htis body style all im going to say if it has some kinks that probably needed to be worked out before it left the factory....shock mounts make noise even after being chnaged and water cooling system is not very durable and went thru new water pump, fan, and thermastat..also ac system has leak and have heard its a common problem..but other than the the interior is very comfortable and gets fairly good gas milage for size... plus chryslers stereos are awsome from the factoryAug 03, 2008

4WD SUV with a V8. Nice car, except the parts are expensive. Example: the electric door mirror was broken and I wanted to buy a new one. 400 euros!! Luckily there is internet and I am able to buy the part from the US at a more reasonable price. And the fuel consumption. A big car with a V8, full time 4WD and automatic gearbox = oil companies love you and your wallet.Apr 01, 2008

This was my second lease vehicle and it was a complete mess. The electrical system started failing early in the lease, leading the locks and windows to not work when the car get wet. Sometimes the tail lights wouldn't work, then a few hours later they would. It got OK mileage but I drove it like I stole it so it wasn't great. 4WD system worked fantastically until the drive train started mucking up. After that it was back to the dealer once a month to get various recalls fixed until I turned it in.Mar 03, 2008

I decided to purchase a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Resplendent in Gold, it was a well-optioned Limited with a 4.7-liter V8 and Quadratrac full-time 4-wheel drive. It also had leather interior, heated seats and the premium Infinity sound system. I needed 4-wheel drive because I recently moved to snow country and my Accord was fairly useless. I quickly fell in love with this Jeep. It was handsome and rugged and still managed to provide a fairly smooth ride considering if had solid axles front and rear. It has plenty of power from the hearty V8 and was never at a loss for lugging oversized cargo or hauling trailers. Yet the shine soon wore off. After years of Honda’s, Audi’s and VW’s, I was sad to see how much effort went into the superficial aspects of this Jeep. From a distance of about 10 feet, it looked great. As you came closer you noticed orange peel on the painted surfaces. Fit and finish are not this Jeeps strong points. Panel gaps were large and overall attention to detail was poor. For such an expensive car there was a large amount of hard plastic surfaces and the transition between the leather and vinyl surfaces was too noticeable. And for such a relatively large vehicle, 4 adults had a hard time getting comfortable on anything longer than a trip around town. On anything other than smooth road surfaces the Jeep squeaked and rattled and during the time I owned this Grand Cherokee no mechanic was able to track the loud moaning sound that came from the rear axle-area. Mind you, they all heard it but no one seemed to know how to make it go away! The brakes, a common complaint with Grand Cherokee owners, always seemed slow to react to the mushy pedal feel and, even after several inspections and adjustments. They never inspired confidence. The steering was sloppy and required constant correction on the freeway – I suppose you can’t expect BMW steering when you have a solid front axle but some sense of self correction would have been appreciated. Let’s not even discuss gas mileage, as it would be unfair to expect any heavy V8-powered 4-wheel drive vehicle to shine is this category. However I was able to manage a consistent 20-mpg on the highway and this big brute runs or regular unleaded fuel. I suppose I expected too much from my Jeep. I wanted value for the money and expected that its good looks were more than skin deep. What I did get was an ability to get to and fro in snow and other bad weather – already an amazing accomplishment. And maybe that’s what I needed to learn about the Jeep. I was judging it by standards that didn’t apply. It wasn’t a sports car or even a luxury car. It’s a truck…my first and (so far) only truck and I was unprepared to accept that trucks, while swathed in leather and packing a 6-disk CD changer, are still designed to take you places no car can go. Keeping this criteria in mind, my Jeep rocked! But my need to explore the Rubicon never outweighed my need for things that cars were better designed to do. I moved away from snow and began to see how unsuited I was for Jeep ownership. I don’t understand why so many folks are at ease driving such big boxes in the city. At any rate, my time with the golden Grand Cherokee was short lived. Shortly after I moved to town it was stolen. Even though I had a love/hate relationship with the Jeep, I was sad to see it go.
