Want some free advice? Never break up with someone on the second day of a 10-day trip, especially when you're traveling through a place with no easy exits or airports. Not the best idea. However, if this does happen to you, hope you are traveling around in a 1999 Toyota 4Runner (as I was when I broke up with my then-boyfriend).
Why is the 4Runner a good car to ride around with an ex in? It's incredibly roomy inside—almost cavernous. Get the stereo pumping, and you will hardly notice the other person is there. And, if you decide to rekindle old flames, the back seat is plenty big. (Just kidding. Well, it might be, but we didn't exactly get there.)
In all seriousness, the 1999 4Runner is a very comfortable SUV with car-like amenities. The seats are comfortable and seem to cradle the back as one would expect from a sportier vehicle. My ex's SUV was the Limited trim, and a 3.4-liter V6 came standard.
Reviewers cite poor gas mileage as a problem but, as is typical for the 4Runner, praise its dependability and off-road capabilities.

September 20, 2023This car is excellent. it is my first car and I plan on keeping it for a long time. It takes me anywhere I need to go, up steep hills even in rain or snow. I am never snowed in because the 4runner can go anywhere.

January 27, 2014Needs more power! TRD Supercharger will be the first upgrade. Works great off road, with factory rear diff. lock and higher than average ground clearance. Of course it is much more fun to drive off-road! Gas mileage is OK for an SUV. Can't beat the build quality - it's built in Japan at the same plant they make the Landcruiser / LX.
September 26, 2009Vehicle was powerful before the 90,000 mile service. It drives through deep snow, wet or powder, without any hesitation. Highway riding is comftable with the right tires. I like a dependable vehicle and this Toyota is built well.

April 6, 2021The 4Runner has been a blast to drive off-road and on trails around the countryside. The are comfortable on short trips but get harder the longer you drive. Fuel economy is around 17 MPG on the whole, which isn't up to par with newer vehicles. With all that said, I still use it as my daily driver and would hate to part with it because it's such a versatile vehicle!
May 1, 2013This is a Toyota 4Runner. Always has been a great vehicle from the Toyota line. The auto tranny shifts very smooth and so far no major mechanical problems at all. Regular maintenance and small items expected to go wrong. Overall, a fun vehicle and a good strong engine. I wish it were 4-wheel drive, but still a great car/truck.
October 8, 2008Great vehicle. Mine is still running strong at 150k miles. It will be hard to part with when that day comes. I like having 4WD but don't want a giant SUV. My favorite feature is the electric rear window for my dog.
October 13, 2009This is a very reliable family vehicle. Gas mileage is good considering it is an older SUV. Runs well but has some squeaks and rattles from being an older vehicle. Have not taken it off road yet bit I want to. Lots of leg room but not so much in the head room area.
