Dodge cheated a little bit and classified their Durango as a compact SUV, even though it's closer in size to some of the full-size SUVs out there, just so they could say it's the biggest, most powerful SUV in its class.
Well, offering a 5.9-liter, 245-hp V8 engine that can tow up to 7200 pounds, it definitely is the most powerful SUV in its class, which includes the Ford Explorer. And it looks like a brute too, more truck than SUV, which makes sense, since it was based on the the Dakota pickup, which itself was based on the full-size Ram pickup. But don't be fooled by its gruff exterior. It is actually easy to maneuver, with good cornering and a sturdy frame.
In 1999, the Dodge Durango introduced a 2WD version to go along with its 4WD. In addition to the on-demand 4WD, you could pay extra for a 4WD that worked on dry pavement. Also new in the 1999 Durango is another engine choice, the 3.9-liter, 175-hp V6. A retooled overhead console and dash controls on the steering wheel were added to the interior. All models came standard with power windows and locks, tilt steering, cruise control, rear climate control, and the inevitable nine cupholders.
You'll make friends quickly with your local repairman, say Durango owners, who complain about problems with the transmission, ball joints, and brakes. You'll also make friends with your local gas pump, as the mileage, like in any SUV, stinks. Still, most owners rate their Durangos highly, because of its beefy look, storage capacity, spacious interior, the comfortable third-row seating, and its easy handling.

I love this truck ive worked on it a lot changed the back axel it had a leak in a bearing so I changed that and the heater core it was blowing smoke through the vents but it was a learning experience
December 10, 2014Next to the H1, Defender and Cherokee this is one of the best off-road vehicles made. With minor upgrades this vehicle can get you in some serious trouble ! This is one of the last 4x4's that can be worked on by a shade tree mechanic.
October 22, 2012My Jenny was a sexy piece of machinery with a beastly V8 that was strong and reliable no matter what you did to it. Plenty of interior room, decent standard features, and the 4WD was superb. Only downside? Gas mileage SUCKED.

February 9, 2011Zero repair costs with 110,000 miles. Fits 8 people comfortably, and drives like a dream! I don't think there s a dollar amount tat would buy this rig from me. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking to get a used SUV for a good price.
May 9, 2013It goes awesome if fuel mileage was more then 12 mpg i would like it so much better. I purchased it for $900 at the junk yard done a couple of bolt on modifications new custom exhaust tie rod and a belt tensioner. For almost 200k on it, it goes amazing

July 23, 2011Plenty of power, more than enough traction, interior not so awesome you worry about the mud, paint is pretty good with a couple scratches, fun vehicle to take off the raod and kick up plenty of dust, ONE FUN TRUCK

June 11, 2008See cons above. Worst vehicle ever. This car is dangerous, unreliable, and it is inconceivable that no one will do anything about it. It is all of the internet as a mess of a vehicle. I just hope no one has died due to the problems it has.
May 5, 2013Its mine, nothing else to express what it is. Its got some miles on it, and its had to have the drive tram on it redone once. Its hard on gas, but its great to drive. Cruise control makes things so much easier. The windows don't really roll down but that's fine since its got a working A/C and heater. Plans to trade in are in works but it'll be about 2 to 4 more years till I can do so.
