For the 1998 model year, Toyota continued to streamline its Celica lineup, this time getting rid of the ST model, which was available as a hatchback and a coupe. The Limited Edition models were also discontinued, while the GT coupe was resurrected.
The 1998 Toyota Celica was available as a GT coupe, hatchback, and convertible. The hatchback was available with an optional sports package. The engine was a 2.2-liter engine, with 135 horsepower. Fuel economy was about 21 to 34 mpg.
Owners find their 1998 Toyota Celicas fun to drive, with excellent handling and cornering. Drivers also like the way these cars look, but they complain that the back seat is uncomfortable and that it needs a more powerful engine.

The top is very easy to put up and down. Car still smells new. It handles very nicely in the city and surprisingly well on the highway when driving out to the lake. Trunk is a little tight but roomy enough for two sets of golf clubs.Apr 14, 2013

This is the second gen6 Celica I've owned, the first being a 1.8 ST, now I've gone up to the 2ltr Gt. Both cars a fantastic, mechanically they are solid! The ST I hit a fully grown deer at 50mph, & it cracked the number plate & split the weathershild underneath, that was it!
The GT obviously has better acceleration, it's very quick off the mark, with the rev range going up to 9000rpm, you really get a chance to push it to it's fully potential (redlines at 7500rpm so I don't like to push it further than that!). They do stick to the road like glue, the braking isn't great, however I do need to replace the brakes so time will tell.
As already said, these cars are solid, built to last. Some parts aren't cheap, being Japanese, but they aren't as expensive as Mercedes/BMW for instance. If well looked after, these can run for 250/300k miles!
The styling of the gen6 Celica is still as good as any current car in my eyes. I think if you don't have to worry about size & space, coupe is the best style of car you can get, similar to the Jaguar XK series, or Hyundai Coupe, they all look fantastic. The Celica still has 2 back seats that can take adults (maybe not for long distances though!) And the boot could probably fit 3 or 4 dead bodies (sorry, it's how i gauge boot size!).
Tax isn't bad for the UK as it's pre-2001, so it costs the same as anything over a 1600cc engine. You're looking at around 32mpg so not bad at all for the engine size/power, it runs at about 160bhp, and it's now 16years old with 136k on the clock!

the performance on this car isnt too bad stock but can be better once you can find some parts for it. cost of ownership isnt to bad. 20 bucks in the tank and you can go for a week or two. the appearance is great cause this is the model that girls didnt give a bad rep. put on a body kit and it can look like a supra too. thats what im aiming for. this car is great to just hop in and take it for a little joy ride. This model of the Celica is the definition of fast and acceleration-ful. The braking is great and the handling...I don't need to tell you for something rally-bred. The car is so fun to drive I felt like actually jumping out of the seat of the thing. The appearance is not the greatest but it still excellently modest. The rear spoiler has plenty of curves especially. The sound it makes is better than perfect: not even an RX-7 sounds better.Aug 03, 2009

I gotta say I seriously like my 98' Celica. It handles very well, gets great gas milage and has nice lines (at least for me better than the last model Celicas imported into the US). The only drawback I have is that it is an automatic, but when ever I'm in ATL traffic it becomes a good thing.May 24, 2009

A beautiful car for very little money. Acceleration puts a smile on your face! Mine was an import which wasn't a big problem apart from the Japanese stereo that insisted that I listen to nothing but Radio 2 - I never want to hear Terry Wogan again! Extremely reliable and very practical for a car in its class. I replaced it with a Toyota Aygo and always had a yearning to buy another one (but a GT4).....
Eventually I sold the Aygo and bought an MR2 Roadster ... Now I have an even bigger smile on my face!!May 12, 2009

Wasn't in the best shape when purchased. But the engine was always a fantasic runner, and never had a moments trouble with the clutch or gearbox. In fact this car still feels tight. Since completly replacing front and rear brakes and suspension it's one of the nicest cars i've ever driven. Handles brilliantly. Mar 29, 2008

A good friend of mine had one and she let me drive it! I nearly died! I thought i would break it but these are actually tougher than you would think!
One good thing about this car, which I think is a standard with newer model toyotas is that the steering gets heavier the faster you go. So if its a fairly light car, like the celica, it handles so much better at a faster speed!
Mel punched me when she realised I was doing 120kmph!Jan 06, 2008

The ST is slightly underpowered compared to the GT, but apart from that its an excellent reliable car, good handling and great stylingNov 04, 2007
ignore photo Gda'y i have a 98 model celica coupe and my cruise control stopped engaging yesterday. i;ve checked both fuses and they're ok actuator plug seems connected properly and the dash light is working just won't engage. please help
I have a 98 Toyota Celica GT everything was working find last summer now suddenly after my car had been in the shop for several months getting work done on the transmission, and now I find that the controls for the two rear windows and the top do not work. All these rocker switches are in the center panel just below the climate control switches and next to the cigarette lighter. The lighter works but the switches do not. I am pretty sure it is not the individual switches (as there are a total of three switches) and I am sure it is not the motors (for the same reason). Would not seem likely that three switches or three motors would all go bad at the same time.
