1996 Audi Cabriolet Preview summaryImage

An open-topped carriage, or cabriolet, gets a modern update with the 1996 Audi Cabriolet. Essentially an Audi 90 that blew its top, the Cabriolet convertible is a compact car with high-end aspirations.

The only changes in 1996 are a new radio, new alloy wheels, and some transmission revisions. The Cabriolet gets its power from a 2.8-liter, 172-hp V6 engine and 4-speed automatic with Sport mode. To the chagrin of some drivers, there is no manual offered. On the outside, the Cabriolet is sleek and elegant, yet solidly built in the Audi style. Its power top folds back behind the rear seat and stowns beneath a hard cover. An optional windscreen for the rear seat (when not occupied) helps cut down on wind noise. Standard features include leather seats and trim, power mirrors, power windows and locks, and a security system. In terms of safety, along with dual front airbags and ABS brakes, the seats have built-in rollover protection.

Style and solidity are the biggest draws for 1996 Cabriolet owners. Because few sold in the U.S., the car is a rare sight on the road, lending it a sense of uniqueness that owners like. Good handling and a quiet ride are also plusses. However, most drivers wish it had a bit more power and came with a manual transmission for better performance. An unflattering plastic rear window, high maintenance costs, and expensive parts are other drawbacks to the Audi Cabriolet.

Stylish cabriolet as chosen by Princess Diana. Still looks stunning years later - much better than later A4 Cabs. Not as quick as you would expect from a V6 but nippy enough. Handling could be better with a little roll on corners. Oct 26, 2011

I have only driven this car 1000 miles since I purchased it through Ebay from carsforsalenyc /Car-Tech Motors /sales@sdigital.net in Astoria NYC when the transmission gave out.Other than not being able to have the sales dealer come good on their word and repair the transmission, after almost 2 months of trying, I love the car.I do need a rear plastic window that I'm hoping to find soon. The car drives like a new car and is very comfortable.I'm looking forward to next summer to finally be able to enjoy this car.Sep 28, 2010

It has the smoothest and best engine I have ever tryed to drive. It looks very classic and drives lige a very luxerious car. Another great thing about the Audi´s are that they almost can´t rust. And the tecnique simply NEVER dies. It is very fast to warm up the cabin even when it is -10 degrees outside. Actually it is warmer inside than the cloesed versions because of the very good heating system.Aug 02, 2008
