The 1989 Honda Accord was the last of that generation. Borrowing an idea from the previous generation, Honda said goodbye to the third generation Accord by offering a luxurious special edition. Otherwise, the Accord stayed mostly the same.
The 1989 Accord came in several varieties, including the DX, the LX, the LX-I and the SE-I. The DX and LX were available as a sedan, coupe, or wagon, and the SE-I was a coupe only. The DX was the base model, while upgrading to the LX gets power windows and doors, while the loaded LX-I gets a bigger engine. The special edition SE-I was luxuriously equipped, with leather seats, a Bose sound system, and alloy wheels. The base engine was a 2.0-liter 98 horsepower four cylinder, while the LX-I and SE-I came with a 2.0-liter, 120 horsepower four cylinder.
The 1989 Honda Accord is beloved for its reliability, good looks, comfort, and practicality. They have excellent reputations as solid, durable cars. Some drivers do find them to be on the small side for a family, and others grumble about the lack of cup holders.

I miss this car but I threw more than one wrench in my garage when trying to fix fuel and vacuum related problems. Very frustrating to get certain parts off of it. The alternator is an example. Located above the CV shaft and under the firewall side of the intake. The CV has to be removed so if you aren't/dont know a mechanic its expensive. I loved the car enough that I didn't mind the work. Be aware of the crank bolt if you try to remove it use some ear plugs. When I broke it loose it sounded like a shotgun went off in my garage.Nov 04, 2014

This car has really been good to me while I have driven it, and I love the fact that it has cloth seats! All the other Hondas had either leather or vinyl and these cloth seats were great through the winter. They match really well with the two-tone upholstery of the interior!Apr 19, 2013

I bought this car over 3 years ago for $1500.00. Mine was the 4-door manual transmission version. I was expecting better gas mileage from it but I wasn't unhappy with the 30mpg I was getting. It was very fun to drive and handled well. For a 20-year-old car, I was impressed that it didn't have any squeaks or rattles and the A/C was still very cold. The sunroof and power windows all still worked perfectly as well. I sold this car to my mom about two years ago and it's still going strong with 225k miles on it. Haven't had a lick of trouble from the engine, transmission, or clutch. The driver's side door handle (inside) is broken and she hasn't been able to find a replacement yet, but she says it's not that big of a deal to her. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if I could find one for the same deal. That exact same car is now selling for over $3k in my area (even with similar mileage.)May 04, 2012

I loved the fact that it was as old as it was and was still able to start up on the coldest days when some other cars wouldn't! The sad thing was I had to let it go because the transmission had started to go on me and it wasn't worth spending a few grand for a car that wasn't worth that much.Jan 26, 2010

I absolutely LOVED this car. Wish I hadn't sold it. The mileage was great, the acceleration was terrific.
The only problem that it really ever had, and my mechanic couldn't figure out, was that it had an oil leak somewhere and he could never find out where. I'd have to add at least 2-3 quarts every couple of days.Nov 06, 2009

This was my baby. I loved this car. It was in all around good car. The only little problem with mine was it had a pretty bad oil leak. No one could tell me where it was coming from and it kept ruining my altenators. I replaced the altenator like 3 times. Everyone kept telling me I needed to get rid of it that it was no good. If I had known I was gonna go through what I went through money wise since my honda I would still have my car! Best car you could ever own! It handled great, had great speed, the interior was emaculate as well as the outside, gas mileage was about 23 - 25 miles to the gallon. Was really fun and exciting to drive.Aug 11, 2009

my son's first car out of college. when he moved to japan I bought it for my daughter to drive in high school and college. In 1998 I swapped my 1996 honda for the 89 cause I thought it would be more reliable for her in Atlanta. Eleven years later I am still driving the 89 accord. Except for a few things that have failed like ac, cruise it still runs great, has no rattles or squeeks, and the steering is better than any car I have ever driven. You just point the car where you want it to go and it doesnt wander at all. Amazing for a 20 year old car!! I like this car so much I am even considering a quality paint job with original paint (black with a gold fleck) I know, I know it will cost more than the car is worth in the market but I would completely restore this car (if I had the money)so a good paint job might not bust the budget.Apr 23, 2009

I am the 2nd owner of this car, I met this car and its first owner back in 1992. I fell in love with it and wanted to own it since day one. Well three years ago, I was able buy it. My first car. It was actually a Honda Accord EX-i
coupe, but since the car guru's aren't what they
claim to be, I had to use SE-i. The first Honda
vehicle that I actually owned. I bought it through a
family/work friend who's wife owned it from new.
Other than the typical Honda Rust paint job (which I
had repainted), the car was the pinnacle of
Japanese build quality and reliability. The odometer
read 269 000 km when I purchased the car and I
sold it with 394 000 km after two and a half years
of ownership. All in all, a great little car that was
fun to drive and the easiest to learn a manual
transmission on. For 1989 this car was loaded:
power windows, !!premium cassette player with
power antenna!! (which was immediately converted
to CD), air conditioning, cruise control, power

With a 2.0 Single overhead cam engine sporting a 2 barrel carb. Manual transmission, 2 stage NOS, light weight, 17 inch Rims and Low profile tires. 35 miles to the gallon makes it affordable, and the engine can take some serious punishment. For a twenty year car, it's not bad. I do need to replace some belts cuz it's squeaking a little. I'll need to replace the brakes soon. I'll probably also replace the clutch and the muffler and it should be good as new almost but it doesn't run that bad now but it does run a little rough. Nice looking car, got new wheel covers for it and it's nice. A couple very minor rust spots and a few scratches but she looks good.Aug 14, 2008

mine was the aerodeck 2.0 exi, one of the best lookin hondas ever. with cool pop up lights and a unique estate/coupe profile, it's a future classic that will never be replicated. good on fuel, nice to drive and well equipped (cruise control, electric windows/roof, etc). shame it got nicked.Jul 26, 2008

I bought this car about a month ago so I still have yet to learn about its quality and everything else.. It is a salvage title, but seems to be doing alright getting me from point A to point B.. It has low miles which is nice.. If it holds up to its full potential for miles because of it being salvaged, it will be an excellent runner! Although, you never can tell with a salvage, so I'm just hoping it treats me well!
The interior is grand, no rips and really clean(I baby this car).. My steering wheel is not pretty though, it was broke into so I believe that's why it is salvaged(So the previous owner said) and the steering wheel looks like it was broke into, but the power steering still works well which I really love! It's an automatic with cruise control, power windows, power steering, and power locks..

89 accord cold weather starting problem
I have a 2.0 L, manual trans., carbureted motor. In cold weather (-5 deg. C or less) it just turns over but won't fire. It's like it's not getting fuel. It has a new fuel filter, new cap and rotor, new plugs, and new air filter. Also on occasion (in cold weather) it would idle high (up to 3,00 rpm) so I changed the thermostat, and it seems to have helped, but I'm not sure if it solved the issue completely. Any ideas???
