This review, written in the summer of 2006, looks at a 21 year old car — the 1985 Honda Civic — many of which are still on the road. Their drivers often have a love hate relationship with their Civics, but as even they note, what other make is still around and driving 20-plus years later?
All the '85 Civics remained unchanged except for enhancements to the CRX models and a late-in-the-year change to the wagon, now offering it as a 4WD with 6-speed manual transmission.
Naturally, the CRXs were receiving most of the public's attention, given their sporty look and performance. Maybe that's why Honda added the changes that gave the CRX Si a 1.5 liter fuel-injected engine with (for Honda) an awesome 91 hp. A sunroof became standard; so too did sport seats. The CRX HF for high fuel economy had the 1.5 litre engine, too, but its 8 valves gave it better acceleration in city driving, but only 58 hp. But, given that it achieved more than 50 mpg, who cares about the hp?
Complaints for the other '85 Civics are that they are noisy and bumpy and that the 60 hp makes it a tad difficult to pass other cars. But at least one owner of an original '86 Civic Si said it was a really fast car with "gobs of go."

Great car, low emissions, great economy, we love this thing,
even though it is manual, and it can be a bit of a beast on the
turns, otherwise, it is adorable, fun, and economical, plus it
hauls plenty of groceries or what ever.Aug 18, 2009

I should be clear, it's not allowing me to choose the
model of my car. I had a Civic Si 1500, Hatchback.
It was not a fast back.
This was my 2nd car.
Performance:
Acceleration - fast for my time. Don't know the
specs. Braked on a dime. Handled perfectly, even
at 120 MPH.
Build Quality:
Maintained it fairly well, but it did need repairs,
mostly my brakes, seeing as how I drove so fast
everywhere! And also needed A/C repairs every
summer. Not just freon added, but actual repairs.
Alternator died twice. Once in Nevada, once here
in Arizona.
Appearance:
Not as sleek as the CRX, but still newer nicer than
people my age were driving at the time.
Cost of Ownership:
MPG great! 20-25 MPG, which was really good for
the time. That never decreased even when I sold
the car years later.
Fun Factor:
Zippy! I loved to street race and it was fun in this
car. Turned well at high speeds.Jul 20, 2009

good fuel economy, cheap everything car, but looks like poop. ride is decenly smooth with recent shocks, but does not handle that great otherwise. the car has approximately 76 horsepower and it doesn't really feall that slow, since the gearing is okay for the low power amounts. overall, not too bad of a car.Aug 22, 2008

i drive Fire Trucks for a living, and i wouldent drive anything else other then a 1985 Honda Civic CRX SI Hatchback while i am not on the job. It get me to work in a hurry when i need it, i get about 40 to 45 MPG, and with gas these days that adds up compared to everyone else in my company where there lucky to get 20 MPG. i have no extras on the exterior, i think the car is sexy just the way it is.Apr 28, 2008

This was car was dope! I drove it back and forth to Chicago twice! I pad $500 for it and didn't have to do a thing to it until it finally blew a gasket and busted a lifter.Dec 31, 2007

This was my first car when I went to Uni. It had been in an accident previously, so had the newer (more powerful) engine dropped into the older lighter body - hence it went pretty fast! (Well, for an 80's civic, anyway). A very fun car to drive - feels like you're racing all the time. Also very forgiving. But with all old cars it was starting to get a bit tired and needing ongoing maintenance.Dec 28, 2007

Bought a white and silver CRX new in fall of 1984. Quick and fun to drive, easy to do parking brake and 'J' turns or moving 360's in the snow. Great mileage...unleaded gas...fiberglass fenders...room in the back for lots of junk and a dog. Traded it in on new '91 Interga and got almost half of the $9,5000 I paid for it. Only had to put tires brakes and exhaust on it. Nov 23, 2007
I was wondering if it would be possible to put a twin turbo v6 6a13 in my 85 civic sedan. It currently makes practically 75 whp so I just wanna be able to go the speed limit on the interstate. Also what other mods would you recommend?
My bf recently bought an '85 Civic 4 door, automatic transmission with 51,000 miles. However, it sat in the harsh Texas weather undriven, unmaintained for 4 years. The tires were bad, the fan stopped working asap, now the battery or alternator is dead. The people who sold it fo him seemed "nice" and he says "honest", but I felt they were overly nice and deflected from the mechanics of the car by emphasizing tge sentimental value of it. (Granny owned it and was from the same state as my bf. ) He paid 750.00 for it. I say he was swindled as rhe car sat for so long and likely deteriorated with dust, mud, rain, freezes, no maintanance. He disagrees as says the low mileage makes up for any issues. I think if you buy a car likw that, be prepared for repair after repair. Was 750 a fair price? Did the seller hijink my easily distracted bf with their sentimental stories about the car? Does 51,000 miles make up for it being discarded and unmaintained for so long, along with being 33 years old? Thanks. I got swindled once by a used car dealer....what a shock...but I was desperate, new to town, needed a car and did learn feom my mistake.
I've got an 85 Honda Civic that lost power and stopped. The engine would kick over but not start. The mechanic said it wouldn't keep pressure as 2 valves have gone. Is it a head gasket problem in the making? Worth fixing?
Want to know what the value is on a 1985 Honda Civic? Kelley Blue Book doesnt go back that far. Also it needs a ball joint on driver side, which the other side should be replaced as well correct?
So my car has been sputtering when I give it gas like its not running all cylinders drove it like that for a week then I went to the store one day and it would turn over but not start its getting gas and spark what's the symptons if jumped timing I'm a angry person with a hammer and don't wanna snap and start going ham on it
