1978 Volkswagen Beetle Preview summaryImage

For 1978, the standard Beetle was no longer available in the U.S., though Volkswagen did introduce an upscale, limited-edition Champagne Edition II, which was a Beetle Convertible equipped with burled elm trim on the dashboard, ermine upholstery, a quartz clock, and a Blaupunkt stereo system. It came with either metallic blue or metallic red exterior paint.

Power for the Champagne Edition II was provided by an air-cooled, rear-mounted, fuel-injected four-cylinder engine that generated 58 horsepower. A four-speed manual transmission, dual braking system, four-wheel independent suspension, and flow-through ventilation system were also part of the package.

my college car, fairly unreliable but the most loved of all the cars i have owned. Cool to wave to other beetle drivers and go to the Bug jams at santa pod. Plus all the parking up in fields dancing to hardcore! great memoriesMar 23, 2010

Umm, I love this car so much. My Grandpa bought it in Baguio when He was working there (BIR). The Beetle's name is BEE and this is the first car I drove at the streets even if there's no aircon. hehe :))) Mar 15, 2010

Like all Beetles the performance of the 1600 CC boxster engine was bad. Even worse the main bearings failed twice. Two rebuilt engines in less than 6 months, whilst doing National Service, that was painfull. The best looking Beetle ever produced, it had a curved front windscreen and a dashboard, unlike the flat dash of the traditional Beetles. Later I fitted a Kombi 2.0L motor to it. That made it lethal bud sadly sold it to buy a motorcycle as I could no longer afford the fuel bill. Jul 19, 2009
