1976 Toyota Celica Preview summaryImage

The 1976 Toyota Celica got a new addition to its lineup: the Celica hatchback. It was marketed as a "sports-touring car," with the hatchback offering more trunk room than the coupe. The Celica coupes got a larger wheelbase for 1976,

The new hatchback came as a GT, which offered sporty handling, upgrading interior finishes, and distinguishing body features like racing stripes and chrome-trimmed wheels. The coupe came in the base ST as well as the GT trim levels. The 1976 Celica had a 2.2-liter, four-cylinder engine.

Consumers had been demanding a Celica hatchback, so once it was introduced it proved to be very popular. The 1976 Celica was awarded Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year.

There's nothing like your first car. It was sporty and fun to drive. Also very reliable and good on gas. I loved the way those raised white letter Goodyear's looked! I still think of it and miss it to this day.May 25, 2013

I was 20 years old on January 29, 1976, when I bought Car, a brand new red Celica GT for $5,400, including tax. I'm now 53 and in the ensuing 33 years have moved 14 times, had 9 jobs, owned 4 Volvos, lived with 3 meaningful men and had 1 baby girl who came home from UCSF in Car 17 years ago. Three of my houses burned, almost all of my employers went out of business, 2 men left and my husband died January 29, 2005, on Cars' 29th birthday. My daughter, my red 2006 Volvo T5 and Car are all that is left and are still going strong. They say you don't plant a chestnut tree for yourself, but for your grandchildren. I think I bought Car for mine.May 16, 2009
