What should I look for when buying a used Volvo XC90?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 85.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 96.2% |
| 2025 | 94.8% |
| 2024 | 92.4% |
| 2023 | 91% |
| 2022 | 87.5% |
| 2021 | 82.4% |
| 2020 | 77.5% |
| 2019 | 74.6% |
| 2018 | 70.4% |
| 2017 | 69.3% |
| 2016 | 68.7% |
| 2014 | 66.7% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2020 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay connectivity with Google Built-In and a larger touchscreen with sharper resolution.
- Fuel efficiency: The XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge.
Which Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?
The 2025 Volvo XC90 offers these trims:
- Core: The entry trim starts with the B5 mild-hybrid powertrain, standard AWD, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a seven-seat layout, making it the value-focused choice.
- Plus: This trim adds the Orrefors crystal shift knob and opens the door to richer interior materials, including quilted Nordico, perforated nappa leather, or herringbone weave textile; it suits buyers who want a more upscale cabin without moving to the top tier.
- Ultra: The top trim adds the 14-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, a head-up display, and access to the optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system; it’s the best fit if you want the most premium equipment.
What Volvo XC90 do most buyers choose?
The Volvo XC90 years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 2,831 | 31.9% |
| 2024 | 2,656 | 33.9% |
| 2023 | 2,249 | 34.4% |
| 2026 | 1,797 | 31.3% |
| 2022 | 1,547 | 35.7% |
| 2017 | 1,113 | 33.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to draw the most attention because they give you more inventory to compare and more chances to find the right price, trim, and condition. They also tend to be the easiest years to shop when you want a broad selection of used XC90s.
What is the Volvo XC90's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $29,029 | −24.2% |
| 2021 | $26,091 | −16.56% |
| 2019 | $19,260 | −14.83% |
| 2017 | $15,360 | −14.81% |
| 2020 | $22,444 | −14.69% |
| 2023 | $37,933 | −14.37% |
| 2016 | $13,716 | −11.86% |
| 2018 | $16,909 | −11.31% |
| 2025 | $51,104 | −8.49% |
| 2024 | $44,856 | −6.72% |
Most XC90 model years are down sharply year over year, which is good news if you’re shopping used and want to benefit from lower asking prices. The newer models are falling too, though by smaller percentages than many older years. Overall, the pattern points to broad price softening across the lineup rather than stability.
The 2024, 2025, and 2018 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- 2025: 8/10

For the safest used buy, the 2020 model posts the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Volvo XC90 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −8.49% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.72%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 31.9% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.9%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2025 model has the most listings at a current average price of $51,104. The Volvo XC90 offers a spacious, refined cabin that makes it especially appealing for family use.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Volvo continues to offer a choice of three powertrains in the XC90, all with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the XC90 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range on a full charge.
- Tech: The infotainment system is larger and offers sharper resolution, with Google Built-In, Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a new user interface.
- Safety: The XC90 includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection.
- Starting price: Base MSRP for the least-expensive version sits at $59,745 after destination.
If you're buying used today, the 2025 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I really wanted this vehicle to work out for us, but it’s just not practical to have people using the back row. Getting in and out is cumbersome just due to how the seats are designed and how they unlock and move. There’s just not enough room for it to be a good experience even for kids, much less a teenager. The back two rows need some re-thinking. For instance, Honda’s seat system in the back two rows is far superior.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Volvo XC90 stands out as an understated entrant in the luxury three-row crossover segment. It has a stylish design and a beautiful interior, and its overall look has evolved subtly enough to stay recognizable without feeling old. The XC90 also brings impressive technology, which helps give it a modern edge in a class where refinement matters.
For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, with the T5 and T6 engines replaced by the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. That update adds to the XC90’s appeal for buyers who want a sophisticated luxury SUV with forward-thinking infotainment technology. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: cargo space is limited, the third-row seats are difficult to access, and the technology can feel too touchscreen-dependent.
